Fahmi urges Media Council to engage all stakeholders, clarify accreditation amid transparency concerns
He said this in response to concerns raised by several media representatives regarding transparency in the establishment and operations of the Malaysian Media Council.
As such, Fahmi proposed a comprehensive meeting involving all media organisations to ensure transparency and a shared understanding of the council's direction.
'Some media representatives have voiced concerns; they do not want the emergence of certain groups or blocs.
'Therefore, I urge the Media Council and its Founding Board to immediately engage with all media organisations so that they receive accurate information ahead of the first Annual General Meeting this November,' he said at the Communications Ministry's Monthly Assembly here today.
Also present were Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, the ministry's secretary-general, Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.
Fahmi said the government had recently signed the official gazette for the establishment of the Founding Board of the Malaysian Media Council as a significant step in strengthening the country's media landscape.
The board comprises 12 members — four representatives each from media companies, media associations, and independent media practitioners and non-media members.
The establishment of the Malaysian Media Council is part of the government's media industry reform initiatives aimed at ensuring that freedom, accountability and professionalism in the media sector are preserved and enhanced. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has urged Southeast Asian countries to make inclusivity a standard in urban governance through the newly-launched ASEAN Urban Women for Resilience and Transformative Sustainable Actions (AURORA) initiative. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said even though women make up half of the 680 million people living in ASEAN's urban areas, yet their representation in decision-making bodies remains disproportionately low. "In some ASEAN local councils, women hold fewer than 20 per cent of seats. This imbalance affects the way cities prioritise issues such as safety in public spaces, access to childcare and the design of transport systems that meet the needs of families and the elderly. "AURORA addresses this by fostering a culture of leadership that is more inclusive and responsive. It brings together cities across ASEAN to strengthen women's participation in governance while improving the quality of urban policies and services for all residents," she said during her speech at the 'A Women-Led City Initiative In ASEAN AURORA: ASEAN Urban Women For Resilence And Transformative Sustainable Actions' forum held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here. The forum was attended by representatives from ASEAN member states, city leaders, civil society groups and regional partners. Zaliha also stressed that cities led with active female participation tend to adopt policies that are more responsive to residents' needs such as integrating community safety, social wellbeing and economic development. She added that Malaysia's own experience with gender-responsive planning across more than 83 local authorities had improved safety in public spaces, enhanced transport accessibility and ensured infrastructure meets the needs of all citizens, guided by feedback from women, seniors, persons with disabilities and caregivers. Under the AURORA initiative, ASEAN member cities are encouraged to adopt a voluntary framework that includes setting targets for women's representation in leadership roles, conducting regular safety assessments of public spaces, and improving public transport accessibility. Zaliha said such measures would help cities monitor progress, learn from one another and raise governance standards across the region.

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysia today called on ASEAN nations to adopt an integrated urban planning approach, which balances environmental stewardship, social well-being, and economic competitiveness through the CHASE City framework. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said that the framework, introduced in the Federal Territories, envisions cities that are Clean, Healthy, Advanced, Safe and Eco-friendly, offering a flexible model adaptable to the diverse realities of ASEAN cities. 'It is within this context of interconnected challenges that Malaysia has sought to define a guiding vision, one that is practical in implementation, yet adaptable to diverse circumstances across ASEAN. 'This is not a collection of separate agendas, but an integrated philosophy that guides urban policy, design and governance, in a holistic way,' she said. She said this in her speech at the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanisation Forum (ASUF), ASEAN Governors and Mayors Forum (AGMF) and the Meeting of Governors and Mayors of ASEAN Capitals (MGMAC) 2025, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), here, today. Dr Zaliha said that the CHASE City framework aligns with ASEAN's urban priorities, as it enables collaboration between government, business, academia and civil society, to create sustainable, liveable cities. She cited the Kota MADANI development in Putrajaya as a tangible manifestation of the framework, incorporating low-carbon solutions, AI-driven smart technologies, active and safe mobility, green networks and community facilities. The minister also highlighted Malaysia's membership in the Davos Baukultur Alliance, making it the first country outside Europe to join the global coalition. 'This membership reflects our belief that cities are more than functional spaces.
