UFC on ESPN 71 headliner Tatsuro Taira excited to show growth after first career loss
In the main event of UFC on ESPN 71 (ESPN, ESPN+) at the UFC Apex, Taira (16-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) faces short-notice opponent HyunSung Park, who replaced an injured Amir Albazi on less than one week's notice. It's a shakeup and a different opponent style than what he was preparing for, but Tairia remains confident his preparation will lead to a return to the win column against Park (10-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC).
"Obviously, the opponent changed on short notice, last-minute, but I've been preparing very well together with my team," Taira told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday's media day. "My team has been very supportive. I've been working on my strength to get stronger and get better. I train with a lot of fighters from my team, so I was actually prepared to fight anyone. I'm ready for this fight."
The fight will be Taira's first since losing a split decision against former title challenger Brandon Royval in October. It was the first loss of Taira's professional career. As the saying goes, "You either win or you learn." Taira took plenty of notes from his battle against "Raw Dog" and is "100 percent confident" he will rebound with a win.
"The last fight against Royval, five-minute, five-round tough fight, definitely made me realize I need to get better conditioning and, of course, the striking side as well," Taira said. "So, I think I'm back now, definitely as a better fighter. ... Conditioning and striking for sure, but not just that. I learned a lot from that fight in gaining experience as well. Now I'm fighting HyunSung Park, who is a younger opponent. Now it's my turn to show the experience and what UFC fighters are."
Park, an undefeated fighter who has finished nine consecutive opponents, including all three of his UFC fights, believes he will be able to knock out Taira by the second or third round. Taira believes the difference in experience and level of opposition will be apparent early in the fight.
"I would say this will be the first time Park will be fighting against a fighter at my level," Taira said. "Likely in the first round, he would understand that what he said was a mistake."
With a win against Park, Taira hopes his third UFC Apex main event will lead to him fighting on bigger cards at bigger venues. Six of Taira's seven UFC bouts have taken place at the UFC Apex. His lone appearance elsewhere came at the UFC's home for pay-per-view events in Las Vegas, T-Mobile Arena.
"Obviously, fighting a T-Mobile or big arenas would be something that I would be excited and looking forward to, but at the same time, I'm excited for this main event, as always," Taira said. "I hope to get this win and hope to get into a bigger venue like T-Mobile."

Rafael Estevam says he chose to focus on fight prep, not weight cut, for UFC on ESPN 71
LAS VEGAS – Rafael Estevam met the media Saturday after his unanimous decision win over Felipe Bunes at UFC on ESPN 71. Estevam (14-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) was a heavy favorite against Bunes (14-8 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at the UFC Apex, but had his win – a trio of 29-28 scores – marred by another big weight miss. Estevam missed the bantamweight mark by 4 pounds Friday – his second weight miss in three UFC fights. 'If you asked any athlete to have 26, 27, 28, just under 30 days to get ready, we would probably see who's who,' Estevam told MMA Junkie through a translator at his post-fight news conference. 'You have to either prepare yourself or focus on the weight. I was going to either focus on my weight or focus on the preparation, and I wanted to be prepared. 'I'm not an athlete who follows the rules. I'm not as disciplined. I have flaws. There are things I need to improve. I want to get better every single time. That's what I was doing: Focus on the preparation. I think there are things I need to evaluate about the weight cut. That's the problem. Weight cuts are hard from me. I have to work on the mental side. I have to work on the psychological side, maybe go through therapy for this. Whenever you go through what I just did, the psyche needs to be unwavering and unbreakable. Last fight, I had the proper time, I prepared myself properly, and I made the weight.' Check out Estevam's post-fight news conference in the video above.

Two Buckeyes make The Athletic's \
Bruce Feldman, formerly of ESPN and currently writing for The Athletic, writes a fun piece each year called the "Freaks List." Basically, he finds the players for each college football season that he considers the most absurdly physically gifted. In short, the "freaks." It's always a fun read, and a great way to learn the names of players to keep an eye on during the upcoming season. And this year, Feldman's list of freaks has two Buckeyes at the top. The top spot on the list is occupied by Jeremiah Smith. We all know that Smith is going to be probably the best receiver in the country this year. But what makes him a "freak," exactly? This quote from Feldman sums it up: "Smith's 11-foot broad jump, 38-inch vertical jump and 23.5 mph on the GPS are jaw-dropping for a receiver his size." Add his 550-pound squat and his 20 reps of 225-pound bench press, and it's clear why Smith is atop the list. He's putting up numbers that you see from linebackers, and he's doing it with nearly world-class track speed. On top of Smith at No. 1, there's another Buckeye in the top ten. Linebacker Sonny Styles slots in at tenth on the Freak List. What stands out about Styles to Feldman? "At 6-4 1/2, 243 pounds, he broad jumped 11-0, vertical jumped 40 inches and squatted 675 pounds." He also mentions Styles' speed, quoting Styles that he topped out at 23.2 mph last year. Of course, what will always impress me most about Styles is his block on Jack Sawyer's legendary fumble return. Styles was behind Texas running back Quintrevion Wisner when Sawyer picked up the ball, and Styles flat-out outrun him to get in front them block Wisner all the way down the field. That's Freak-level speed. No other Buckeyes made his top 100, but this isn't a list of best players or or most valuable. It's a list of physical freaks. It's a very fun read in general, and it definitely has plenty to keep Buckeye fans excited for the upcoming season.
