Drugs Worth Rs 45 Crore Seized In Assam; 4 Arrested

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the successful seizure of drugs valued at Rs 45 crore in a series of anti-narcotics operations conducted by the state police.
The seizure happened in Cachar district while four persons were arrested on Monday on the charges of drug peddling.
In a post on social media platform X on Monday, CM Sarma praised the efforts of the Cachar police, who recovered a total of 1.5 lakh Yaba tablets during two consecutive raids, carried out based on reliable intelligence.
The operations led to the arrest of four individuals involved in the drug trafficking activities, with authorities stating that the arrests would aid in dismantling the larger narcotics network operating in the region.
Chef Miniser Sarma reiterated the state government's commitment to tackling drug abuse and safeguarding the youth of Assam.
"Assam Police stands firm in protecting our youth," the Chief Minister wrote on social media.
This latest seizure adds to a series of successful operations led by Assam Police as part of the state's aggressive anti-narcotics drive.
According to CM Sarma, "with the drug trade posing a serious threat to youth and community safety, authorities have intensified surveillance and enforcement, especially along key transit routes bordering other northeastern states."
Earlier, drugs valued at more than Rs 5.7 crore were seized by the security forces in Manipur and Mizoram.
A Defence Spokesman said that the Assam Rifles successfully apprehended a drug trafficker and seized a large amount of illegal narcotics from Manipur's Noney district on Wednesday night.
The suspected drug peddler was moving in a truck from Imphal to Jiribam, along National Highway-37.
After receiving input from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence about the likely trafficking of narcotics, Assam Rifles personnel became vigilant and stopped a vehicle matching the description at a checkpost in Noney.
During the search operation, 569.24 grams of heroin and large quantities of amphetamine/methamphetamine tablets were recovered from the possession of the arrested drug peddler.
The drugs, the total value of which is Rs 5 crore, were contained in 50 cases of soap and 49 sachets.
In another incident, the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel of the Mizoram and Cachar Frontier, based on specific input, conducted a search operation at Vairengte in Mizoram's Kolasib district, along southern Assam, and seized 7.042 kg of pseudoephedrine tablets (a precursor chemical) valued at Rs 7.04 lakh.
One person was also arrested in connection with the drug seizure, a BSF spokesman said.
Officials said that all the drugs were smuggled from neighbouring Myanmar.

"This behaviour is not in accordance with the professed beliefs of the Catholic Church," said Ms Parker, according to The Telegraph. "I know that the Catholic Church does not have a blemish-free history when it comes to adopted children or children in care, but I hoped that this kind of prejudice had been eradicated long ago. Maybe I am wrong." Church found guilty Details of the disciplinary hearing conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAEW) showed that the church was guilty of discrimination and harassment and ruled that it had unfairly sacked Ms Parker in 2021 because she was not religious. The tribunal described Ms Parker, a Cambridge University alumnus, as a "very intelligent, articulate and able woman", who had been a chartered accountant since 1998 and worked with Deloitte and Credit Suisse before moving to the charity sector in 2009. After being fired, Ms Parker sent an expletive-ridden message to her boss, Lyn Murray, which read: 'There is one thing I always wanted to say to you. Now I can. F*** OFF YOU B*TCH', and 'Your god might forgive you but I never will. B*tch.' Despite this, the employment tribunal judge backed Ms Parker's claims. Compensation for Ms Parker has yet to be set, and it is understood that the diocese is to appeal the ruling. Speaking after the ruling, Ms Parker said she had experienced "four years of hell", adding that she hates the Catholic church and that thet "cannot be trusted".

Honeymoon murder case: Meghalaya cops solve murder in 7 days, prove efficiency
GUWAHATI: Meghalaya deputy CM Prestone Tynsong Monday said that it has been proved that the state's police force ranked among the best forces in the country with its Special Investigation Team (SIT) achieving a breakthrough in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case in just seven days. Tynsong's statement comes days after the Indore couple's families had labelled the state police 'inefficient', demanding CBI probe into the case. However, after Sonam's arrest Monday, Raja's mother Uma changed track and thanked Meghalaya police as well as the search teams who kept working on the case despite inclement weather and treacherous terrain. "Without them we wouldn't have ever known what happened to Raja, or that his wife was behind this horrific crime," said a family friend. Tynsong, who is also the home minister, said social media remarks depicting Meghalaya as a den of criminals in the wake of Raja's murder had hurt sentiments of people of the state. On the contrary, Meghalaya is very safe for tourists, he added. "The successful operation by state police will further encourage people to keep visiting the state." The minister said people would remember how Meghalaya handled militancy 15-20 years back. "We don't need any forces from central govt," he further added. Tynsong said govt has already directed owners of homestays and hotels to ensure proper registration of tourists. "In fact, we also have in place a tourism app through which they can send documents to the police station or SP concerned." Tourism minister Paul Lyngdoh said Meghalaya govt will work closely with the local tourism industry to enhance safety measures. Besides, the Conrad K Sangma govt will invest Rs 4,000 crore to develop tourism infrastructure, including construction of high-end accommodation in popular tourist spots like Sohra and Umiam over the next two years.

Obulapuram mining case: Appeals challenging CBI court order admitted
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court single bench of Justice Kunuru Lakshman on Monday admitted criminal appeals filed by Gali Janardhan Reddy and other accused in the Obulapuram Mining Case. He 'reserved' orders on the interim applications filed by the petitioners seeking 'bail'. All the accused – Janardhan Reddy, BV Srinivasa Reddy, V D Rajagopal, IAS (retd), K Mehafus Ali Khan – had filed applications in the main writ appeals, seeking 'bail' by suspending the CBI court order dated May 6 this year. The senior counsel appearing for Gali informed the court that consequent upon the CBI Court had convicting him and other accused to seven years' imprisonment and a fine of each Rs. 10,000. (The Karnataka Assembly by way of a notification dated May 8 withdrew Gali's membership). He pleaded before the judge to hear the application seeking suspension of the conviction order at an early date on the ground that the Election Commission will issue a notification for holding election to the constituency held by Gali. Justice Lakshman agreed to hear the application. All the accused had moved the vacation court in May seeking similar reliefs. However, the court declined to hear the appeals stating there was no urgency. The court adjourned the appeals for further adjudication to August.
