Zubayr Griffin earns MVP of Upstate All-Star Showcase
ALBANY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The high school basketball season may be over, but that doesn't mean that local talent isn't still competing, one of which is the 2,000 point scorer and state champion himself, Zubayr Griffin.
Over the weekend, Griffin participated in the Upstate All-Star Showcase in Albany. In the game, he did what he's been doing all season. The Monmouth commit dropped 26 points, finishing the performance with the game-winning bucket in overtime. He was also named the Upstate All-Star Showcase MVP in the process.
Despite his high school season being over, we can expect to see Griffin continue with his talents for years to come.

Manny Pacquiao and Sydney Sweeney Headline 2025 Boxing Hall of Fame Weekend
Canastota, NY is known as the showplace for boxing and has continued to be the location for the International Boxing Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. 'It's a great time for boxing because the whole world of boxing focuses on this celebration to honor the new class of inductees,' said Ed Brophy, the Executive Director of the International Boxing Hall of Fame. This year's class featured 14 names, four received posthumous inductions and 10 were in attendance. Those names included referee Kenny Bayless in the non-participant category, television producer Ross Greenberg, and journalist Randy Gordon in the observer category, and fighters Manny 'Pac Man' Pacquiao, 'The Pazmanian Devil' Vinny Paz, Michael 'Second To' Nunn, Mary Jo Sanders, Cathy 'Cat' Davis, Yessica 'Kika' Chavez and Anne Sophie Mathis. From Thursday to Sunday, fans had the opportunity to take pictures, get autographs hear ring side talks from previous and new inductees and see the fist casting for the new inductees. 'This is the highest honor to get inducted into the Hall of Fame and fans come from all over,' Brophy said. 'Boxing's the greatest sport and we're excited to present the highest honor.' 'I've been coming to the International Boxing Hall of Fame since 2009, because of the love, because of how well Ed Brophy runs the show here and to actually be inducted just took it up another level for me,' Bayless said. On Sunday, the Parade of Champions made it's way through the streets of Canastota and saw celebrities and previous hall of fame inductees like George Cooney, Jackie Kallen. The parade was headlined by Christy Martin and the Grand Marshal, actress Sydney Sweeney, who will be portraying Martin in a movie later this year. After the parade was the induction ceremony at Turning Stone where the 2025 class received their Hall of Fame rings, reminisced on the past and gave some words of encouragement. 'Don't give up, just stay focused,' Pacquiao said. 'Hard work and discipline. The most important is discipline that's what we can do so we can fulfill our dreams in life. It might not be in boxing but in our lives we have a dream to fulfill, to accomplish. So we should believe in ourselves, of course believe in God, and have hard work and discipline.' MO State Rep. introduces bill to cut childhood poverty in half
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri State Representative, Ray Reed announced Monday a bill that seeks to cut childhood poverty in half for Missouri children. During a Missouri General Assembly special session, Reed introduced the 'Missouri Child Tax Credit' bill in hopes for the state to invest in Missouri's low-income and working-class families. Potential Royals move to Kansas sparks mixed reaction in Overland Park 'At a time when we're considering investing nearly a billion dollars to retain a football team, I believe we must also ask ourselves what kind of state we want to be. If we have the resources to build stadiums, we have the resources to build stronger futures for Missouri's kids,' Rep. Reed, said. The statement comes on the same day Jackson County legislators approved the 2025 Jackson County budget, which included investments in community needs such affordable housing and health equity, according to Jackson County Executive Frank White Jr. The child tax credit seeks to provide direct payments to low-income families with children under the age of 18-years-old. Kansas City's Country Club Plaza struggles with closures and empty shops In a release form Reed's office, it states the bill is modeled after the 2021 Biden-Harris expansion that lifted more than three million children out of poverty nationwide. 'This bill isn't just about alleviating poverty—it's about unlocking potential,' Reed said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Local not-for-profit hosts a Benefit Golf Tournament
METAMORA, Ill. (WMBD) — Golf clubs were swung Monday morning at the Metamora Fields Golf Club to raise money for underprivileged youth. The Tri-County Urban League brought back an annual Benefit Golf Tournament that had been put on pause after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. 'We've started it back up; our last outing took place before COVID,' said Jimmy Faggett, the Tri-County Urban League's chairperson. 'So right now, we're just trying to get things back up and running and get it to where we can have an annual event each year like it was before the COVID pandemic came about.' Participants were able to compete in the tournament as an individual or as a team of four and aimed to bring together leaders, partners, and supporters to help raise money for the league. The Tri-County Urban League is a local not-for-profit that aims to improve the educational, social, and economic opportunities for people in need in the Peoria area, according to their website. One of the programs that benefits from the fundraiser is the Tomorrow's Scientists, Technicians, and Managers program, which encourages and motivates minority youth to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and business. The program gives these youth opportunities to go on out-of-state field trips, career mentoring, hands-on training, and much more. 'The Tri-County Urban League has been around for 60-plus years, so we pride ourselves on serving the community in the areas of workforce development, TSTM, and education,' Faggett said.
