KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- Global credit rating agency, AM Best has assigned a financial strength rating of B++ (Good), a long-term issuer credit rating of 'bbb' (Good) and a Vietnam National Scale Rating (NSR) of aaa.VN (Exceptional) to Military Insurance Corporation (MIC).
The outlook assigned to these credit ratings (ratings) is stable, reflecting Vietnam-based MIC's balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as strong, as well as its adequate operating performance, neutral business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management.
AM Best in a statement said the ratings also factored in a neutral impact from the company's ultimate parent, Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank (MB).
As measured by Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio, MIC's balance sheet strength assessment is underpinned by the strongest level of risk-adjusted capitalisation. It benefits from good financial flexibility, with a demonstrated track record of capital injections over the last 10 years.
The company's track record of robust internal capital generation is also viewed to be supportive of capital requirements arising from planned business growth, in addition to having a conservative investment strategy, with the majority of investments held in cash, term deposits and fixed-income securities.
AM Best considers MIC's operating performance to be satisfactory, with an average return on equity of 11.2 percent over five years and a combined ratio of 98.5 percent from 2020 to 2024, while its steady income from term deposits and bonds plays a key role in its total earnings.
However, the company posted an underwriting loss last year, mainly driven by Typhoon Yagi and other one-off factors, as it also reported a return to underwriting profitability in the first quarter of 2025. Prospective business expansion in wholesale lines is expected to support an improvement in overall results.
Furthermore, the credit rating agency assesses MIC's business profile as neutral. The company ranked fourth by gross premiums written in Vietnam's non-life insurance market, with approximately 6.3 per cent market share in 2024.

Malaysia's semiconductor exports remain resilient, grow at 15.7% in 1H 2025

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's semiconductor exports remained resilient, growing 15.7 per cent in the first six months of this year alone (1H 2025), outpacing overall export growth of 3.8 per cent, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. He said that every RM1 spent triggers over RM2 in direct output across the economy through supply chains, supporting sectors, and household incomes. "In total, the industry generated RM4.9 trillion in economic output last year, underscoring its role as a national multiplier,' he said in his remarks at the ASEAN Semiconductor Summit (ASEMIS) 2025, today. Tengku Zafrul said that, amid global headwinds, the 1H 2025 performance clearly shows Malaysia's relevance and competitiveness in the global semiconductor space. He said that what is equally important is that this growth is spreading -- from Penang and Selangor to Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Perak and Sarawak. Moreover, he said it is not just lifting big players, but also nearly 1,000 small and medium enterprises that form the bedrock of its semiconductor ecosystem. "What makes this industry so vital is also its far-reaching impact,' he said. - Bernama

Civil Servants Urged To Prioritise Dedicated And Diligent Service

PUTRAJAYA, July 24 (Bernama) -- The assistance announced by the government yesterday should be reflected in more dedicated and diligent service by civil servants, to ensure better delivery to the people, said Public Service director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz. He said the initiatives announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim demonstrate the government's concern for the wellbeing of the people and civil servants, particularly in the current challenging economic climate. He described the measures, such as cash aid and extra public holiday in conjunction with Malaysia Day, as a clear manifestation of the principle of 'rukun ihsan' (compassionate) in government policy. 'In fact, what was announced by the Prime Minister yesterday is something that has been eagerly awaited by everyone, whether civil servants or the public. 'On behalf of all civil servants in Malaysia, I would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the Prime Minister for his concern over the needs of the people during these trying economic times,' he told Bernama and RTM here today. Commenting further, Wan Ahmad Dahlan said the assistance would help ease the daily financial burden on the people and serve as motivation for civil servants to improve the quality of their services. On the extra public holiday on Sept 15, he said the initiative provides civil servants with the opportunity to spend quality time with their families and strengthen the spirit of unity. 'This is something new, as Malaysia Day has only been celebrated on Sept 16. However, in light of the Prime Minister's concern for work-life balance, the government has granted an additional day for us to celebrate the formation of Malaysia,' he said. He also urged all civil servants to continue supporting government policies and always comply with the directives of the leadership.

He said among the notable projects included Carsem's advanced packaging for energy efficiency, electric vehicle (EV), connectivity and artificial intelligence (AI); NXP's semiconductor products, Infineon's world's largest 200mm silicon carbide (SiC) power fab; Syntiant's MEMS microphone and sensors; and Plexus's manufacture and re-manufacture of printed circuit Boards. On growing 10 semiconductor companies with revenue more than US$1 billion; and 100 with revenue more than RM1 billion, he said Malaysia now has at least 13 homegrown companies across the semiconductor value chain, emerging as potential national champions.
