US selects 11 firms for program to fast-track small nuclear test reactors
By Timothy Gardner WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Department of Energy said on Tuesday it has made an initial selection of 11 companies for a pilot program seeking to develop high-tech test nuclear reactors and get at least three of them to begin operating in less than a year. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT As artificial intelligence and data centers boost power demand, the U.S. is aiming to develop small nuclear reactors which developers say will be cheaper to build per Megawatt of output than today's large reactors because the parts could be replicated in factories. The department's move comes after President Donald Trump issued executive orders in May seeking to speed permitting of nuclear reactors and reform the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an independent agency. The orders allow the Energy Department to authorize the test reactors, without the NRC. KEY QUOTE 'President Trump's Reactor Pilot Program is a call to action,' said James Danly, deputy energy secretary. 'These companies aim to all safely achieve criticality by Independence Day, and DOE will do everything we can to support their efforts.' COMPANIES SELECTED The department selected the following companies: Aalo Atomics., Antares Nuclear, Atomic Alchemy, Deep Fission Inc., Last Energy., Oklo , Natura Resources LLC, Radiant Energy, Terrestrial Energy, and Valar Atomics. The department said each company will be responsible for all costs associated with designing, manufacturing, constructing, and decommissioning their test reactors. HURDLES Small modular and so-called "advanced" nuclear reactors have been talked about in the U.S. for years, but the only ones operating are in China and Russia. Hurdles include getting permits for plants that generate electricity for the grid, developing commercial levels of a new fuel some of the reactors plan to use called high-assay low-enriched uranium, and developing factories for the reactors when none of the plants are yet operating. AI Startup Perplexity Reportedly Offers $34.5 Billion for Google's Chrome Browser
AI startup Perplexity is offering to buy Google's Chrome, according to a report on Tuesday. The unsolicited $34.5 billion bid from Perplexity is worth more than its own valuation at an estimated $18 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. Perpexity and Google did not immediately respond to Investopedia requests for comment. The offer from Perplexity comes as Google's parent company, Alphabet (GOOGL), faces uncertainty from an antitrust ruling that could be announced as soon as this week, with a federal judge set to decide what steps Google must take, a year after the company was found to have maintained an illegal monopoly in search. Forcing a sale of Google's Chrome could be part of the decision, something the Department of Justice pushed for last year. Google Pushes Back Against Forced Chrome Sale Google has since argued that a forced sale could harm its business, hold back its ability to develop new technology, and pose a risk to national security, among other things. It's proposed to adjust exclusive agreements with Apple (AAPL), among other solutions, which could allow more competition. Google has stated that it will appeal the August 2024 monopoly ruling, as well as the remedy decision. Some Wall Street analysts have said they view a forced sale as unlikely, with JPMorgan analysts telling clients late last month that they anticipate 'prohibition of exclusionary practices & preloading of Google Search (i.e., no exclusive search default on any access point), and not much more.' Separately, a federal judge ruled in April that Google also has illegally maintained monopolies in the digital advertising sector, which the company said it would appeal. Vontier (VNT) Stock Trades Up, Here Is Why
What Happened? Shares of electronic equipment provider Vontier (NYSE:VNT) jumped 3.3% in the afternoon session after its subsidiary Teletrac Navman announced it is deploying next-generation AI-enabled Smart Dashcams to boost safety for the Canal & River Trust's fleet. The deployment of these AI-enabled Smart Dashcams is for the Canal & River Trust, a charity responsible for managing waterways in England and Wales. This initiative is designed to enhance safety and driver wellbeing through investments in new technology. The news builds on recent positive momentum for the company, which reported strong second-quarter results in late July, beating analyst estimates and raising its full-year earnings guidance. This solid performance prompted several analysts to upgrade the stock or raise their price targets in early August, contributing to a consensus "Moderate Buy" rating from Wall Street, signaling growing confidence in Vontier's business trajectory. After the initial pop the shares cooled down to $41.82, up 3.6% from previous close. Is now the time to buy Vontier? Access our full analysis report here, it's free. What Is The Market Telling Us Vontier's shares are not very volatile and have only had 5 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business. Vontier is up 16% since the beginning of the year, and at $41.82 per share, has set a new 52-week high. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Vontier's shares at the IPO in September 2020 would now be looking at an investment worth $1,230.
