The price of influence: Why bartering needs a rebrand in the GCC

I sat across from two female powerhouses in the Gulf Cooperation Council's (GCC) influencer marketing field, and one thing was clear – brands need to stop thinking of bartering as a budget hack and start treating influencers like true partners.
Shifting influence
With Saudi Arabia's average age at just 29 and more than 60 per cent of the Arab region's population under 30, the Gulf is a vibrant playground for youth-driven, creator-led content. GCC consumers crave content that resonates with their values, their families and their aspirations, not globalised campaigns that miss the mark.
Currently, we're witnessing a seismic shift in marketing budgets – 76.5 per cent of CMOs are actively reallocating funds from traditional and other digital channels towards influencer marketing. This isn't a momentary fling; it's a transformation. #HardFacts
Bartering in influencer marketing
In a region where social media doesn't just thrive – it dominates – barter arrangements remain surprisingly common. According to a 2024 report from Influencer Marketing Hub, 28.2 per cent of brands in the Gulf still engage in barter-based partnerships.
So, here's the question – if an influencer typically charges AED 2,000 for a post, why are we still offering a goodie bag in return? Does that make sense? For many brands, it still does.
In the UAE, 59 per cent of brands allocate up to AED 250,000 annually for influencer marketing, yet over a third still prefer barter-based deals.
As smarter ROI tools and audience analytics become more accessible, when will this paradigm shift? Influencer marketing is no longer a novelty; it's an essential brand touchpoint. The way we structure partnerships, especially barter deals, urgently needs to evolve.
Last week, I sat down with influencer experts Nourhan Khalifa and Reem Haddad – part of MSL's PR & Influencer practice, led by Mary Smiddy – who know this landscape intimately. Our conversation kept returning to one word: value.
Bartering isn't dead – but it needs a rethink
Let's be clear—there's a place for bartering in influencer marketing. MSL's PR and Influencer practice recommends focusing on several key points:
Value Alignment: The product or experience must accurately reflect the influencer's rate and relevance. Offering a product worth AED 150 to an influencer whose content typically generates AED 5,000 in engagement undermines the value of the partnership. Clear Deliverables: Define content formats, posting timelines and tagging expectations upfront. No grey areas—no assumptions. High-Quality Offering: If you're not offering payment, present something exceptional. Think exclusive experiences or limited-edition releases—not throwaway samples. Mutual Exposure: Ensure it's worth their while. Offer brand visibility, reposting support, or opportunities for future paid collaborations. Limited Availability: Position the opportunity as curated and exclusive. The barter should feel selective and thoughtful, not merely transactional. No Additional Costs: Influencers shouldn't have to cover expenses for your brand's exposure. Delivery, travel, props—it's all on you. Performance Follow-Up: Treat barters like a professional collaboration. Track performance, provide insights and nurture the relationship.
The missed opportunity: Nano-influencers
Mary Smiddy, Business Lead, MSL Consumer PR and Influencer practice, suggests that the best barter partnerships often happen with micro and nano influencers, especially when they're just starting out. At this stage, they genuinely appreciate meaningful collaborations with brands they trust, making it a win-win for everyone.
The MENA region is home to over 13.2 million nano-influencers – but their potential remains largely untapped. Globally, nano and micro-influencers are prized for their authenticity and unparalleled engagement rates.
Yet in the Gulf, the tendency to favour mid-tier and mega-influencers persists despite evidence showing that smaller creators cultivate deeper and more trusted connections.
Necessary legalese
An important note when considering barter deals is that many GCC markets now require influencers to obtain commercial licences for all collaborations, including barter arrangements.
These licences come with fees, paperwork and renewal cycles, which ultimately push influencer rates higher. Brands that overlook this reality risk more than bad PR—they risk legal liability.
First-party influence in a cookie-free world
With the impending death of third-party cookies, brands are scrambling for alternatives. Influencers are the solution hiding in plain sight. These creators offer first-party psychographic data – insights into what people feel, trust and desire. It's a level of intimacy no algorithm can replicate.
But you don't unlock that value with a smoothie bowl and a smile. You access it with respect, reciprocity and a long-term vision.
The bottom line
The barter model isn't broken. It's dangerously misunderstood. In the right context, with the right influencers and a strategic approach, bartering can be a gateway – not a shortcut.
It's time for brands in the GCC to stop seeing bartering as a budget-saving tool and start treating it as a relationship-building strategy.
Influencer marketing doesn't begin with transactions; it begins with trust. And trust—isn't that worth far more than a freebie?

He stated: 'The successful implementation of the AI Policy depends not only on regulation and infrastructure, but also on investing in people. At BIBF, we are committed to supporting the national AI agenda by offering academic and professional development programmes in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics - ensuring alignment with ethical standards and the future needs of the economy.' Dr. Al-Shaikh highlighted BIBF's ongoing efforts to develop specialised training programmes and workshops in collaboration with leading global partners. These efforts aim to equip Bahraini professionals with the skills required for the jobs of the future. Dr. Al-Shaikh noted that over the past two years, the BIBF has implemented a number of national initiatives in this field, including intensive programmes in artificial intelligence in partnership with local and international entities, in addition to 'AI Readiness' programme to train more than 5,000 Bahrainis over the next five years in AI skills and applications. Concluding his remarks, Dr. Al-Shaikh reiterated the importance of cooperation between government, academia, and industry to achieve the goals of the AI policy. Complex but critical: The GCC's shift to defined contribution plans

As the employment landscape across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) grows and matures, it's imperative that the retirement systems which supports workers across the region grow too. It's increasingly clear that the traditional end-of-service gratuity (EOSG) model that has long underpinned retirement benefits in GCC countries must adapt as the region seeks to position itself as a magnet for global talent and investment. That means embracing Defined Contribution (DC) plans that align with international best practices and the expectations of a globally mobile workforce. The push for reform is gaining momentum. A 2024 survey by Smart found that 60 per cent of expatriates in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar feel current EOSG payments fall short of meeting their retirement needs as it can be challenging for financial planning due to a lack of transparency. This sentiment underscores the importance of reforms to maintain the region's attractiveness to international talent – many of whom will have come from regions where DC models are widely available, if not the norm. Encouragingly, reforms are underway. In the UAE, the Dubai International Financial Centre's DEWS plan has already replaced EOSG with a regulated, employer-funded DC scheme. Not only this, but in late 2023, the UAE's Cabinet introduced a voluntary pension savings programme, allowing employers in the private sector and free zones to contribute a monthly percentage of salaries to licensed investment funds. These contributions are protected from employer insolvency and designed to outpace inflation. In the UAE at least, these early signs show us that clear transition is underway – and is likely to soon become much more widespread. Indeed, the situation is similar in other Gulf countries. Bahrain now requires monthly employer contributions to be managed by its Social Insurance Organisation. Oman's Social Protection Law signals a future move to a savings-based system. Saudi Arabia still largely operates under the traditional model, but leading companies are developing their own corporate savings schemes to stay ahead of the curve. Qatar, too, is likely to prioritise funded alternatives as it expands its retirement coverage beyond local nationals. A tipping point is likely to come when a sufficient number of products are in market. As more financial institutions increase their capabilities in the region, it's likely that would fundamentally shift how retirement is funded across the GCC and governments may mandate participation. We've seen this upscaling of firms' activity and resources in the Gulf region – including for our own operations. However, this transformation won't be without challenges. Regulatory harmonisation across GCC countries is complex, with each jurisdiction operating under different labour laws. Yet we know that consistency – across products, regulatory standards, etc. – is key to ensuring savers are empowered to arrive at the best outcomes. To realise this, we'll need to see legal reforms and cross-sector collaboration, factors which can ultimately lay the groundwork for consistent, transparent DC frameworks. For employers, a DC system brings new responsibilities — notably, regular contributions and administration oversight. But the long-term benefits, including improved talent retention and workforce satisfaction, outweigh the costs. And governments can support the transition by offering flexible contribution structures and incentives. Ultimately, the transition to DC systems is not just a financial reform; it's a social one. It's about ensuring that the region's workers — who have helped build the Gulf's economic success — can look to the future with confidence. The Gulf region needs to move towards a retirement system that's modern, relevant, and worthy of its global ambitions, supported by an expanding, sophisticated financial services industry across regional hubs. The latest data released by the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf ('GCC-Stat') revealed that the nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries reached US$587.8 billion by the end of the fourth quarter of 2024, up from US$579 billion at the end of the fourth quarter of 2023, reflecting a growth rate of 1.5%. The data indicated that the contribution of non-oil activities to the GCC's nominal GDP reached 77.9% by the end of the fourth quarter of 2024, compared to 22.1% from oil activities. The manufacturing sector contributed 12.5% to the GDP, while wholesale and retail trade accounted for 9.9%. The contribution of the construction sector reached 8.3%, while public administration and defence logged 7.5%, finance and insurance 7%, and real estate activities 5.7%.
