Major ice storm causes $342M in insured damages across Ontario and Quebec
The late-season ice storm that swept through parts of Ontario and Quebec has left an astronomical bill in its wake.
The Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc. estimates that the ice storm at the end of March caused approximately $342 million in insured damage.
The storm downed trees and power lines, flooded basements and damaged vehicles, with over 1 million homes and businesses in Ontario and 70,000 in Quebec without power.
The Insurance Bureau of Canada said that in some cases, properties were without power for over a week due to strong winds and heavy rainfall that prevented hydro crews from completing necessary restoration work.
'Many people had their lives disrupted and property damaged from this event. Insurers are here to help residents and businesses recover and rebuild from this storm,' said Amanda Dean, vice-president of the bureau for Ontario and the Atlantic region.

Dean notes that insurance companies are continuing to work with policyholders impacted by the storm.

'Storms of this magnitude can take significant emotional and financial tolls on those affected,' said Dean.
The bureau warns that the frequency and severity of flooding and extreme weather in Ontario, Quebec and across Canada continue to increase each year.
In 2025, home insurance rates have risen 5.28 per cent, well above the rate of inflation, according to a report published by My Choice Financial, a Canadian insurance aggregator and comparison website.
While there are several factors, insurance experts say climate change is a major driving force.
The Insurance Bureau of Canada reported record-breaking losses of $8.5 billion paid out in 2024, triple that seen in 2023 and 12 times the annual average between 2001 and 2010.
Amid increased risk, the bureau notes that it is collaborating with the provincial and federal governments to try to find solutions to mitigate the risks of severe weather.
The bureau is urging all levels of government to take steps to adapt to extreme weather.
The bureau's recommendations include no longer building unprotected homes and businesses in high-risk flood and wildfire zones, enhancing flood defences in communities at high risk of flood, helping homeowners understand their risks, subsidizing home retrofits to help homeowners reduce their exposure to floods and wildfires, and investing in improved emergency preparedness, response and recovery capacity.

The transition from physical casino floors to digital platforms has fundamentally altered the gambling landscape. While online casinos offer unprecedented convenience and accessibility, many players yearn for the vibrant atmosphere that characterizes traditional brick-and-mortar establishments. The challenge for contemporary online gaming platforms centers on recreating that distinctive social energy which transforms casino visits from solitary activities into memorable communal experiences. Why Players in Canada Are Turning to Online Communities The rise of online gambling in Canada has opened up a world of convenience, variety, and privacy. But even the best bonuses and sleekest interfaces can't fully replace the energy of a live casino floor. That's where social features come into play. The roundup of the country's leading online casinos points to a growing trend: the most popular platforms are investing in more than just game variety?they?re building communities. Whether through Discord servers, multiplayer formats, or tournaments with built-in chat features, these options help Canadian players stay connected while gaming solo at home. The technology creates an immersive environment where players observe dealer expressions, hear the authentic sounds of chips and cards, and experience the genuine suspense of real-time gaming. Virtual Lounges Simulate Casino Environments Progressive online casinos have developed virtual lounge spaces where players gather between games. Valley Line LRT West construction, road closures enter Phase 2
The City of Edmonton is moving into the second of three phases of its accelerated roadwork this summer, to make room for the 14-kilometre second leg of the Valley Line LRT from the downtown core to the west end. The city elected to shut down select intersections so the builder, Marigold Infrastructure Partners, can get work done about twice as fast as previously expected, instead of maintaining access and dragging out construction for a few more years. 4:57 Valley Line West builders aim to condense construction schedule with closures Starting next week, Stony Plain Road and 139 Street will be fully closed to traffic for about nine weeks. There will be a partial closure upcoming at Stony Plain Road and 142 Street. Story continues below advertisement Roadwork will also commence on 95 Avenue and 156 Street area, resulting in some partial closures, but that won't begin until road work along Stony Plain Road and 156 Street is complete. As the project enters Phase 2, that means some construction will wrap up shortly in the intersections under Phase 1. Traffic is expected to flow through the intersection of Stony Plain Road and 124 Street sometime next week ,after being closed for seven weeks. 'Thanks to favourable conditions, we're able to open the 124 Street intersection on schedule,' Marigold Infrastructure Partners construction manager Jonathan Cox said in a statement. 'We recognize this closure had a significant impact on the businesses in the area, and we sincerely appreciate their patience during this important construction period.' The three-phase accelerated plan began in April and is expected to wrap up by the end of November, resulting in significant traffic restrictions at key intersections and along busy corridors. In a news conference Friday morning, both the city and Marigold said closing down whole intersections is a strategy they hope to adopt in future projects. Story continues below advertisement 'Everything is different. Locations are different. Traffic impacts are different. If there's something we can do to a location that's similar that has the same results, then absolutely,' Latte said. 'This performed exactly as we expected,' Cox explained. 'I think, maybe, some members of the public had some skepticism — which was justified, based on previous projects in the city and previous performance. But, this is the new normal, I think for us, and we can deliver in these time frames.' The work along the 104 Avenue corridor between 106 Street to 121 Street will remain ongoing throughout all three phases. By the end of 2025, the city said Marigold aims to have all of the roads around the LRT in their final configuration. Major construction began in 2021, and so far, the line is more than 40 per cent complete. Marigold projects that roughly 60 per cent of the project will be complete by the end of the year. The entire west leg of the Valley Line LRT is expected to be complete in 2028. The Valley Line is a public-private partnership being built by Marigold Infrastructure Partners, which is made up of a team from French civil engineering and construction firm Colas and American technology-focused defense, intelligence, and infrastructure engineering firm Parsons.
