Sea Forum 2025 in El Jadida : Pioneering sustainable ocean and biodiversity initiatives
The eighth edition of the Sea Forum, which opened Thursday evening in El Jadida, highlights crucial issues related to ocean protection and marine biodiversity, with the goal of rethinking our connection to the sea from a sustainable development perspective.
Organized until May 11 under the theme «The Sea, the Future of the Earth», this Forum aims to serve as a space for exchange, reflection, and action, bringing together experts, researchers, artists, as well as representatives from institutions, NGOs, and businesses to address major environmental and maritime challenges.
This edition, marked by international cooperation, honors France as the guest country, underscoring the desire to strengthen synergies to promote the sustainable management of oceans and coastlines.
The opening ceremony was notably attended by the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, the Consul General of France in Casablanca, Pascale Trimbach, and the Governor of the province of El Jadida, Mhamed Atfaoui.
During the opening session, the founder of the Forum, Mehdi Alaoui Mdaghri, emphasized the importance of making the sea a central issue in public policies, with the goal of promoting a sustainable future.
For her part, the Consul General highlighted the importance of maritime spaces as resources for the economy and food security, praising Morocco's commitment to ocean protection and the «exemplary» cooperation between Paris and Rabat in this field.
In a video message broadcast during the opening, Morocco's ambassador to the United States, Youssef Amrani, also emphasized the need for promoting cooperation across the Atlantic Ocean as a strategic space for an «inclusive, sovereign, and development-oriented Atlantic synergy».
The Governor, for his part, recalled that this event showcased the maritime assets of the province, which boasts a 145 km coastline, 16 beaches rich in biodiversity, and the industrial port of Jorf Lasfar, a key driver of regional economic development.
The Sea Forum 2025 is structured around six major themes: «Feeding and Healing, Preserving, Trading, Dialoguing, Advocating, Exploiting, and Innovating». The program includes conferences, thematic and artistic workshops, exhibitions, film screenings, as well as activities, sports events, and exploration of the marine environment.

Rabat – Morocco has announced an updated national strategy for sustainable development, aimed at creating a fair and inclusive green transformation by the year 2035. Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Leila Benali presented the revised strategy to the House of Representatives' Committee on Infrastructure, Energy, Minerals, Environment, and Sustainable Development on Tuesday. Benali explained that the updated strategy builds on the achievements of the first version launched in 2017, which helped improve institutional coordination, develop clear sectoral plans, and launch a digital platform for monitoring progress. However, she noted that some challenges remain, such as the lack of local monitoring systems and the need for more measurable indicators. The new strategy takes a flexible and inclusive approach that focuses on six key transformation areas. These include protecting and valuing natural resources, fair access to basic services, transitioning to a low-carbon green economy, ensuring energy, water, and food security, promoting territorial justice, and preserving Morocco's cultural heritage. The strategy was developed through a wide national consultation process. It included regional meetings across Morocco, sectoral and community discussions, and an online platform to gather input from citizens and Moroccans living abroad. Benali said the strategy reflects the vision of King Mohammed VI, the New Development Model, the government program, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. A multi-level governance system will be used to implement the strategy. This includes a national committee led by the head of government, as well as sectoral and regional committees. A three-year budget planning system aligned with sustainable development goals will also be introduced, along with a monitoring and evaluation system to be updated every two years. 'Ibrahim Governance Weekend' (IGW 2025) Forum Kicks Off in Marrakech
The "Ibrahim Governance Weekend" (IGW 2025) Forum kicked off on Sunday 01 June in Marrakech, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, with the participation of a distinguished group of prominent figures from the worlds of politics, economics, and civil society. The participants gathered to discuss the theme of financing Africa's development. The opening ceremony of this event was marked by a message from His Majesty King Mohammed VI to the participants, which was read by HM the King's Advisor, André Azoulay. This flagship event of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, held annually in a different African country, highlights the critical role of Africa's resources in accelerating development and transforming the continent's position in the new global economy. The program of this year's edition, which runs until June 3, features an opening day focused on current leadership challenges in Africa and worldwide, in addition to the Ibrahim Forum 2025, held under the theme "Financing the Africa We Want." The Forum includes plenary sessions on Africa's priorities, resource mobilization, reform of the multilateral financial system, and investment across the continent. These discussions aim to contribute to shaping a strong African stance ahead of the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development, scheduled from July 1 to 3 in Seville, Spain, and to highlight Africa's ability to play an active role in this area rather than remaining a mere passive beneficiary. A comprehensive report will be published following the IGW Forum, complementing the preliminary "Facts & Figures" document with the key conclusions from these three days of discussions. King Mohammed VI advocates for Africa's economic transformation at Ibrahim Governance Forum 2025
King Mohammed VI delivered a powerful message to the participants of the 2025 «Ibrahim Governance Weekend» Forum, which opened on Sunday, June 1, in Marrakech. In his address, read by royal advisor André Azoulay, the King outlined strategies to ensure Africa's development. He called for a «paradigm shift in development financing (...) to devise innovative mechanisms and fully leverage the contributions of the African diaspora». He stressed that «Africa cannot rely solely on public development aid or external funding, which, by nature, generate debt». Instead, he urged Africans to foster «an institutional, economic, and social environment conducive to development». Recalling his February 22, 2015 speech in Abidjan at the opening of the Morocco-Ivory Coast Forum, the King reiterated his call to «strengthen and expand intra-African trade», highlighting that «Africa's share of global trade does not exceed 3%», while «intra-African trade accounts for only 16% of the continent's total trade volume, compared to 60% in Europe and 50% in Asia». «With 40% of the world's raw material reserves and 30% of critical minerals, as well as vast mineral, energy, water, agricultural, and biological resources, Africa can no longer afford to simply export its raw materials. The time has come for Africa to fully harness its wealth», he declared. The King underscored that «Morocco is now positioning itself as a strategic catalyst for South-South partnerships», citing concrete, transformative projects that will reshape the continent's economic and social landscape, including the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP), described as «a true corridor for integration and economic development». Morocco, he added, is also committed to financing African projects through the «Mohammed VI Investment Fund» and «Casablanca Finance City». «Development cannot be decreed; it is built through ambitious policies, investment in human capital, and rigorous economic governance». In his 2015 address in Abidjan, King Mohammed VI emphasized that «if the last century was one of independence for African states, the 21st century must be one of triumph over the scourges of underdevelopment, poverty, and exclusion».
