Morocco Launches Updated Green Strategy to Achieve Sustainable Development by 2035
Rabat – Morocco has announced an updated national strategy for sustainable development, aimed at creating a fair and inclusive green transformation by the year 2035.
Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Leila Benali presented the revised strategy to the House of Representatives' Committee on Infrastructure, Energy, Minerals, Environment, and Sustainable Development on Tuesday.
Benali explained that the updated strategy builds on the achievements of the first version launched in 2017, which helped improve institutional coordination, develop clear sectoral plans, and launch a digital platform for monitoring progress.
However, she noted that some challenges remain, such as the lack of local monitoring systems and the need for more measurable indicators. The new strategy takes a flexible and inclusive approach that focuses on six key transformation areas.
These include protecting and valuing natural resources, fair access to basic services, transitioning to a low-carbon green economy, ensuring energy, water, and food security, promoting territorial justice, and preserving Morocco's cultural heritage. These areas will be supported by five tools, including developing human capital, accelerating digital transformation, promoting innovation, improving legal and tax systems, and strengthening sustainable financing.
The strategy was developed through a wide national consultation process. It included regional meetings across Morocco, sectoral and community discussions, and an online platform to gather input from citizens and Moroccans living abroad.
Benali said the strategy reflects the vision of King Mohammed VI, the New Development Model, the government program, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
A multi-level governance system will be used to implement the strategy. This includes a national committee led by the head of government, as well as sectoral and regional committees.
A three-year budget planning system aligned with sustainable development goals will also be introduced, along with a monitoring and evaluation system to be updated every two years. Tags: Environment in Moroccogreen strategysustainable development

1,345 Requests, Complaints Handled in 2024 via 'Chikaya.ma' Portal
Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita told the House of Councillors on Tuesday that in 2024, the Ministry handled a total of 1,345 requests and complaints received via the " national claims Portal. Responding during question time, Bourita stressed that " constitutes an operational framework for interaction with the grievances of Moroccans worldwide, emphasizing the paramount importance of listening to them and taking their expectations into account. The Minister explained that the complaints received can be divided into four main categories. The first category comprises consular complaints concerning the procedures and services provided by diplomatic representations, while the second concerns issues relating to civil status or personal affairs. The fourth category includes complaints of a social, economic or financial nature, relating to subjects such as taxation and land ownership. He also assured that the Ministry handles directly all complaints falling within its remit, while other claims are forwarded to the relevant departments or to the Hassan II Foundation for Moroccans Residing Abroad. In addition, he noted close coordination with the Institution of the Ombudsman to interact with these complaints, stressing that the new framework ordered by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, concerning the Mohammedia Foundation for Moroccans Residing Abroad will provide a more suitable framework for handling these complaints and expectations more swiftly and effectively, thus providing timely responses and ensuring better coordination between relevant departments. Hajj: Saudi Arabia Launches World's Largest Cooling System for Pilgrims
Rabat – Saudi Arabia has announced the launch of the world's largest cooling system at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, where pilgrims are gathering to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. More than 1.4 million pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj, which kicked off today. Saudi authorities promised to take all necessary measures to ensure the success of the Hajj season amid scorching temperatures. The newly launched cooling system has a capacity of 155,000 refrigeration tonnes, The National reported on Tuesday. According to the report, the system is set to ensure that temperatures at the mosque remain between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius. These efforts are part of Saudi Arabia's 'comprehensive vision aimed at elevating the pilgrim experience and providing the highest levels of comfort and tranquility during ritual performance, especially given the potentially harsh weather conditions,' argued The National report. Last year, Saudi authorities announced the death of 1,3000 pilgrims due to temperatures that reached 50 degrees. The number included 20 Moroccans who died during the 2024 Hajj season. Morocco has a pilgrim quota of 34,000, with 22,400 pilgrims being monitored through official government channels and 11,600 through travel agencies. Moroccans paid at least $65,000 to perform the Hajj this season. King Mohammed VI last month addressed a message to Moroccan pilgrims, asking them to honor and represent Morocco's values. 'I therefore expect you to be ambassadors for your country and preserve this bright cultural image. Keep in mind that it is these incontrovertible values which have enabled our country to continue to enjoy security and stability, and to press ahead,' the King said.
