Piastri stays on top in Spanish GP practice

Championship leader Oscar Piastri topped the times again ahead of title rival and McLaren team-mate Lando Norris in Saturday's third and final free practice ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix.
The 24-year-old Australian clocked a best lap in one minute and 12.387 seconds to outpace Norris, who is three points behind him in the drivers' championship, by 0.526 seconds.
Charles Leclerc was third for Ferrari, seven-tenths off the pace, ahead of Mercedes' George Russell, four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull and Racing Bulls' impressive rookie Isack Hadjar.
Kimi Antonelli was seventh in the second Mercedes ahead of two-time champion and local hero Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari and Liam Lawson in the second Racing Bull.
Piastri will on Sunday seek not only to increase his lead in the title race, but also claim an eighth consecutive podium for McLaren, a feat achieved previously by only two drivers – Hamilton and three-time champion Ayrton Senna.
The session began in hot and dry conditions with Alpine new boy Franco Colapinto leading the way soon followed by home favourite Alonso, greeted by a loud cheer from a big Saturday crowd basking in the sunshine.
In a slow start, Lance Stroll and Gabriel Bortoleto joined in, but after 12 minutes only Bortoleto and Colapinto had set times.
The true action did not begin until the half-hour mark with Sainz clocking 1:14.124 followed by Leclerc and Hamilton taking over before Norris and Russell trimmed the top spot lap to 1:13.396.
Emerging last, Antonelli promptly endorsed the impression that Mercedes, like Ferrari, had found time overnight by going second on his first timed lap. Russell was four-tenths clear.
With only 17 minutes remaining, only six cars were on track as teams conserved tyres at a high-degradation circuit. It offered little entertainment for the fans before Verstappen, after set-up changes, went top in 1:13.375.
On their second runs, McLaren lifted the bar with Piastri clocking 1:12.387, a second faster than McLaren. Norris went second, 0.526 adrift and Leclerc third. Unexpectedly, the range of times from first to 10th was 1.4 seconds.

BERLIN: Mercedes-Benz has proposed a deal under which U.S. cars could be imported into Europe duty free in exchange for tariff waivers on the same number of vehicles that EU automakers export to the U.S., the company's CEO said in a German magazine interview. Kyrgios 'disappointed' after Wimbledon blow
Nick Kyrgios will miss Wimbledon for a third successive year after another injury setback. The Australian has not played at the All England Club since reaching his only grand slam singles final in 2022, where he was beaten by Novak Djokovic. After more than two years on the sidelines with knee and wrist problems, Kyrgios returned at the start of this season but was forced to abandon plans to play doubles at the French Open after suffering another knee injury. And he has now revealed he will not be able to play in his favourite part of the season, writing on Instagram: "Just wanted to give everyone a quick update – I've hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won't make it back for grass this year. "I know how much you've all been looking forward to seeing me out there, and I'm genuinely sorry to disappoint. This is just a bump in the road though, and I'm already working hard to get back stronger than ever. "Thank you for all your continued support – it means everything to me. See you soon!" The 30-year-old's career was put in jeopardy by a torn ligament in his wrist in 2023, which required surgery and kept him out for a year and a half. He finally returned to action in January but admitted after losing to Britain's Jacob Fearnley in the first round of the Australian Open that he might have played his last singles match at Melbourne Park. He was in tears when more pain in his wrist prompted him to retire at Indian Wells in March, although he did win his first singles match since 2022 against Mackenzie McDonald in Miami later that month in what was his most recent tournament. Kyrgios was still a draw at Wimbledon last year after moving into TV punditry, while he will be appearing at the New Wimbledon Theatre on June 24 as part of the live tour of his podcast 'Good Trouble'.

Cricket Australia (CA) is gearing up for a white-ball series tour to Pakistan, scheduled for early next year, signaling a positive step towards strengthening cricketing ties between the two nations. During an online press conference, CA CEO Todd Greenberg conveyed his positive outlook on the upcoming tour, emphasising the significance of the series against Pakistan and the ongoing collaboration between the two cricket boards. "I believe it will be another good tour of Pakistan. The series against Pakistan is an important part of our schedule. There has been good communication between Pakistan and Australia regarding both red-ball and white-ball series," Greenberg said. "We need to look for more opportunities for series, which we will definitely do," he added. Looking back on the 2022 tour, Greenberg expressed enthusiasm about future matches in Pakistan. "We would like to play a series in Pakistan. In 2022, we toured Pakistan after a long gap, and the tour was very successful. The Australian team received a warm welcome. It would be great if such series continue to happen." Greenberg emphasised the league's commitment to bringing in talent from Pakistan, recognising the popularity of Pakistani players among fans, and explained the mutual benefits of such participation.
