
Lanarkshire locals warned by leading charity over scam text messages
Lanarkshire locals are being warned over scam text messages claiming that they are about to miss out on help with their heating bills, according to a leading charity.
Advice Direct Scotland, which runs the national consumer advice service consumeradvice.scot, said anyone receiving such a message should delete it and report it to them.
The fake texts previously appeared to be circulating only in England and Wales, but scammers are now targeting people north of the border as well.
The messages, which claim to come from the UK Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), urge recipients to apply for the 'Winter Heating Allowance' through a fake website.
One such scam message reads: 'According to DWP records: You have not yet submitted your application for Winter Heating Allowance 2025-2026.'
It adds that people will only receive the '£300 payment' if they complete their application soon, giving a false deadline.
It is thought that the scam originated in the wake of the UK Government's announcement about the Winter Fuel Payment in June, a benefit which applies in England and Wales.
In Scotland, the separate Winter Heating Payment is administered by Social Security Scotland, and no application is required. Payments are made automatically to those who are eligible.
Advice Direct Scotland is warning that links included in the messages may lead to fake websites designed to steal people's personal and financial details.
The charity is urging people to spread the word about the scam, particularly if they have older friends or relatives who may be more vulnerable to fraudsters.
Anyone receiving such a message should contact consumeradvice.scot on 0808 164 6000, or report the scam via the tool at scamwatch.scot.
Figures published by Advice Direct Scotland in June show digital scams have surged by over 1,000 per cent since 2021, with reported losses totalling £861,384 in the past year.
Cases include romance scams, cryptocurrency fraud, phishing emails with fake deals, and false social media adverts pressuring victims to hand over money, bank details or personal information.
Hazel Knowles, consumer project lead at Advice Direct Scotland, said: 'These scam messages are highly convincing and may target vulnerable people, particularly older citizens who might be expecting legitimate support.
'It's important to remember that the genuine Winter Heating Payment in Scotland is automatic if you are eligible, and there is no application process.
'You will automatically receive a single payment between December and February, and you will get an email from Social Security Scotland informing you when it's coming.
'Anyone who receives a suspicious text message should avoid clicking on links, never share personal or banking details, and report the scam immediately.

It comes after reports state pensioners could lose DWP payments after 'unfair' £10,000 rule. The furious business owner told The Sun: 'It's absolutely outrageous how big companies can play with people's lives like this, it's disgraceful. I'm a fairly regular player with Gala Bingo, but I don't pay big stakes or anything.' She said she began playing at around 4:30pm on Monday and first won over £1,200 less than three hours later. 'I couldn't believe my luck,' she said. Jacqui, from Torbay in Devon, added: 'Then I got another win 20 minutes later for £2,280 and was already spending the money in my head. 'Then I won £1,600, £2,400 and then another prize of £1,800. I won a few more prizes before it stopped, I had almost £10k in my account.' Jacqui then said she saw other winners asking the Gala chat host if the winnings were real. It said 'enjoy your winnings', but the money never made it to Jacqui's account when she withdrew her prize. She said she was going to pay for private care to get her daughter tested for autism due to a wait on the NHS lsit. She also planned to pay off the rest of her husband's car and said she is 'absolutely gutted' by what happened. 'When you've been told you've won something and then it's snatched away, it makes you feel terrible.' she said. A pensioner in Kent, meanwhile, hoped to pay for an operation for her beloved Collie-cross Cooper. Jill Douthwaite, 72 and from Edenbridge, thought she had won £2,700. She said: "I was so relieved because I thought I could spend £500 to save my dog's eyesight. We're a family who can't afford to go on holidays and we've been struck with a lot of bad luck in the past too. 'My daughter even phoned her dad to say she could repay his loan for the car, but then she had to go back on her word because Gala Bingo did.' Gala Bingo, which has contacted the Gambling Commission due to the incident, has said customers would not receive their winnings. Instead, they would be refunded what they spent on Bingo Tickets. A Gala Bingo spokesperson said: "We apologise to customers for a technical error which occurred during our Summer Nights Bingo promotion for a short period of time, resulting in all players receiving incorrect payouts. Our customer Terms and Conditions clearly state that in the event of a malfunction, winnings can be voided. Affected players have been contacted directly with a gesture of goodwill."

DWP State Pension warning as future payment age suggested to Brits

The age will gradually increase to 67 between 2026 and 2028 for those born after April 1960. The transition process is then expected to be completed for everyone by March 2028. The planned change to the official age of retirement has been in legislation since 2014, with a further rise from 67 to 68, which is set to be implemented between 2044 and 2046. A further rise to 68 is expected to be brought forward from 2046. An industry expert has warned that the UK state pension age may need to rise to 80 without significant reforms, as the current system is becoming unaffordable. In other related news, state pensioners could lose DWP payments after 'unfair' £10,000 rule. The Independent reports The Office for Budget Responsibility projects the annual cost of the state pension could reach £200bn by 2073, representing 7.7-8.4% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) by the 2070s, as shown in a new report. A staggering 64% of those aged between 60 and 65 have no private retirement savings at all. Dean Butler, the managing director for Retail Direct at Standard Life, part of Phoenix Group, has voiced his concerns. It comes after reports that state pensioners could lose DWP payments after 'unfair' £10,000 rule. Dean shared: "While self-employment can bring autonomy, it also brings new financial responsibilities. One of the most often overlooked is pension saving without an employer to set up a pension plan or contribute to your pot, it's especially important to stay on top of your retirement savings." He further explained: "While those who have always worked for an employer will be used to NI contributions being taken out of their salary automatically, this is not the case when you become self-employed. You can make these payments through your yearly self-assessment or by making payments online." The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has increased the state pension to £11,973 for the 2025/26 financial year. However, the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association warns that a single person needs £14,400 annually to maintain even a basic standard of living during retirement, reports Birmingham Live. This suggests that state pensioners could face a shortfall of more than £2,400 compared to the current state pension provision. The new State Pension can be claimed once you reach the State Pension age if you're a man born on or after 6 April 1951, or a woman born on or after 6 April 1953. For those born before these dates, these rules do not apply. Instead, you'll receive the basic State Pension and may also qualify for Additional State Pension. To be eligible for any new State Pension, you will need 10 qualifying years on your National Insurance record. You might also qualify if you've lived or worked abroad or paid reduced-rate National Insurance contributions. The number of qualifying years on your National Insurance record directly impacts the amount of State Pension you receive.
