Robert Vadra misses ED appearance due to flu, says he's cooperating
New Delhi [India], June 12 (ANI): Advocate Suman Jyoti Khaitan, counsel for businessman Robert Vadra, on Tuesday addressed the media through a virtual press conference to clarify his client's absence from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) appearance in a money laundering case.
Khaitan, speaking via Zoom, said recent media reports wrongly implied that Vadra was evading ED summons.
'These reports are misleading. Vadra developed flu-like symptoms and was advised to undergo a COVID-19 test, which he has taken. He is following all necessary health precautions,' Khaitan stated.
Reaffirming Vadra's cooperation with the investigation, Khaitan said, 'He has willingly offered to join the probe through virtual mode and has previously submitted voluminous documentation to the ED.'
The lawyer further stated that Vadra's prior appearances, including a three-day questioning in April in a separate money laundering case linked to a 2008 Haryana land deal.
Khaitan also disclosed that Vadra plans to travel abroad later this month to attend his daughter's graduation ceremony, but remains open to participating in the ED probe either before or after the trip.
Vadra, the husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, was summoned by the ED recently in connection with a case involving UK-based arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari. Sources said Vadra sought a deferment of the summons and will be given a new date for recording his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
In 2023, the ED filed a chargesheet alleging that Bhandari purchased and renovated a property at 12, Bryanston Square, London, on Vadra's instructions and with his financial support--an allegation Vadra strongly denies. He has dismissed the case as a 'political witch hunt' aimed at 'harassing him for political reasons.'
The agency is also probing Vadra in another money laundering matter linked to land transactions in Bikaner, Rajasthan, where he and his mother have previously been questioned. (ANI)

FTA with India brings ‘genuine' competitive advantage, UK Parliament told
London, Jun 14 (PTI) The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations concluded with India places the UK at a 'genuine" competitive advantage in the manufacturing sector, the House of Commons was told this week. During a debate on the bilateral FTA agreed last month, UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds fielded a series of questions on the advantages of the deal which has been pegged to increase bilateral trade by GBP 25.5 billion annually in the long term. Reynolds reiterated that the pact marked a huge economic win for the UK as the 'best deal that India has ever offered". 'On advanced manufacturing… a set of advantageous positions has been agreed, putting this country at a genuine competitive advantage, particularly in relation to sectors such as automotive and machinery," said Reynolds, in response to a question by British Sikh Labour MP for Smethwick, West Midlands, Gurinder Singh Josan. 'India is traditionally a very protectionist economy, and it is the world's fastest growing big economy. Whether it is for goods or services… or the West Midlands as a whole, there is so much good stuff here to celebrate," added the minister. The debate this week comes ahead of UK-India Week, which begins next week as part of the annual India Global Forum (IGF) summit in London. The India-UK FTA is set to dominate the agenda, with Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal among the speakers expected to address the forum. It will also mark the launch of the 2025 edition of the 'India Meets Britain Tracker', which analyses the investment flows by Indian companies into the UK. With the UK and India ranking as the sixth and fourth largest economies respectively, the Tracker offers insights into one of the world's most strategic investment corridors following last year's report setting a new record of 971 Indian-owned companies operating in the UK – a figure that has been consistently on an upward trajectory. 'Indian businesses are no longer just investing abroad – they are transforming global economies," said IGF founder Manoj Ladwa. Deep-rooted conspiracy in Nagaram land transactions: ED to HC
The ongoing investigation into the alleged fraudulent sale of Bhoodan lands as private lands in Nagaram village of Maheshwaram mandal in Ranga Reddy district suggested that there was a 'deep-rooted conspiracy' and 'use of forged documents', the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said. In a counter affidavit filed before the Bench of Justice C.V. Bhaskar Reddy of the Telangana High Court in a writ petition seeking probe into 'Bhoodan land fraud', the ED officials said that manipulation of records maintained by officials at Tahsil, Mandal, District and Chief Commissioner of Land Administration offices resulted in alienation of government land. 'The investigation is on and there is a possibility that some more facts may emerge regarding the role of the said persons and also Government officials,' the counter affidavit by ED Hyderabad Assistant Director Gajaraj Singh Thakur stated. The ED informed the HC that they had recorded the statement of writ petitioner Birla Mallesh under Section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, and stating that the petitioner revealed certain facts related to lands under survey no. 194 of Nagaram village. The ED officer informed the HC that the complaint of Mr. Mallesh was forwarded to the Telangana DGP under Section 66 of the PMLA on November 8, 2024. However, there was no response from the DGP office till date in the matter, the affidavit stated. No action under PMLA was initiated by the ED relating to lands under survey nos. 194 and 195 of Nagaram village, as no case was registered by any police station. Following a private complaint lodged by one Dastagir Shareef, a court referred case was registered against Khaderunnisa and others by the Maheshwaram police of the Rachakonda Commissionerate. Based on this, the ED issued an Enforcement Case Information Report pertaining to fraudulent transactions over lands in survey no. 181 and 182, the affidavit said. No ECIR was issued relating to lands under survey nos. 194 and 195. The writ petitioner Mallesh alleged that some senior IAS and IPS officers purchased lands in Nagaram villages under these survey numbers. Justice C.V. Bhaskar Reddy issued notices to the senior bureaucrats directing them to file their respective counter affidavits. The officers moved the division bench seeking a direction to stay the single judge's order. The division bench, however, instructed them to file their objections and responses before the single judge.

Kerala jeweller, aide carjacked on Salem – Kochi highway near Coimbatore; robbed of 1.25 kg gold
In yet another case of highway robbery on NH 544 (Salem – Kochi Highway), a Kerala-based jeweller and his aide were carjacked and robbed of 1.25 kg of gold at K.G. Chavadi near Coimbatore on Saturday morning. The highway robbers, who reportedly conversed in Malayalam, also took away ₹60,000 carried by the jeweller, Jaison Jacob, 55, of Thrissur. The incident took place around 5.45 a.m. at K.G. Chavadi when Mr. Jacob and his employee S. Vishnu were heading to Thrissur in a car. The duo earlier arrived at the Coimbatore Railway Station by train from Chennai, after purchasing gold, and drove towards Palakkad en route for their return journey to Thrissur. According to the police, the robbers struck at the car travelled by Mr. Jacob and Mr. Vishnu when they reached near a fuel station at K.G. Chavadi. A truck waylaid their car and a few men, who tailed the duo on another vehicle, approached the car. When Mr. Jacob and Mr. Vishnu refused to open the doors, the men broke a door glass. They subsequently got into the car and one of them drove it. The men took the gold and cash from the car, before ousting Mr. Jacob and Mr. Vishnu, after travelling for some distance, said the police. The police suspect that the robbers escaped to Kerala through another route via Velanthavalam. Meanwhile, Mr. Jacob approached the K.G. Chavadi police and sought their help. Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police K. Karthikeyan visited the scene of crime and constituted special teams to trace the robbers. He said that five persons are suspected to have been involved in the robbery. 'The police have got some strong leads on the robbers and will be arresting them soon. The truck has been located,' he told The Hindu. Several incidents of highway robberies have taken place in the Tamil Nadu side of NH 544 close to Kerala border in the past.
