'Rome wasn't built in a day' - O'Donnell

BBC News20-02-2025

Stephen O'Donnell pleaded patience from the Motherwell fans as his side gets to grip with the way new manager Michael Wimmer wants to play. The German boss has been vocal on his intent to play intense, attacking football - quite a change from the style under previous gaffer Stuart Kettlewell."When the manager leaves, it's really disappointing and especially when you've been in the team, you've been a big part of his spell, it hurts," O'Donnell reflected on Kettlewell's exit. "But that's also part of football, we go on. It was sad that he left but there's obviously a new fresh slate and all I'd ask is that the fans give the team that the gaffer picks a bit of time to hopefully start to see improvement."I hope it comes on Saturday against Dundee United but Rome wasn't built in a day and hopefully there'll be improvements."However, the Motherwell vice-captain was confident about how quickly he and his teammates have gotten to grips with Wimmer's plans."All we can do, as players, is ask for clarity - and that's what was disappointing, I thought we had that before, I have been at clubs and we've not had that."The gaffer has come in and he looks like he's going to be very clear on what he expects from us. You get the impression that if it isn't delivered then you won't play and that's how it should work. That's how it will hopefully be, and you just hope that you're in the team whenever the team's picked."Despite the difference in perceived playing styles, O'Donnell assured fans that it hasn't been night and day from the previous regime."It doesn't look like he's ripping up everything, so that's always a good start."We've obviously got a lot of bodies in the building, which again is a positive for him he can start to cipher through where he thinks people are best suited."That will take time but I certainly see what he's looking to do, things that we maybe have come away from as a team, and hopefully the manager coming in reinvents that and starts to spring it back to life."

Mike Maignan and Jamie Gittens' stances on Chelsea transfer moves revealed

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan and Borussia Dortmund star Jamie Gittens both wish to join Chelsea this summer, according to reports. The west London club are keen to sign a new goalkeeper after a series of unconvincing performances from Robert Sanchez in the 2024-25 season. Chelsea are already in talks over a deal for Maignan but it is thought that they are reluctant to meet AC Milan's current €30m (£25m) asking price for the France international. As negotiations continue, it has now been revealed by French outlet L'Equipe that the 29-year-old wants to leave AC Milan in order to join Chelsea. The same is true for Dortmund winger Gittens – German outlet BILD have reported – in what has become a double transfer boost for the Blues. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. It is believed that €60m (£50.5m) would be enough for Chelsea to wrap up the deal for the 20-year-old Englishman 'very quickly'. Chelsea are keen to have Gittens in their squad for the Club World Cup after sending Jadon Sancho back to Manchester United following his loan. 'There's definitely a market for [Gittens],' Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl told Sport1's Doppelpass show last month. 'He's a very exciting player. We'll be having discussions soon. If offers come in, we'll have to deal with them.' Chelsea opened talks with Dortmund over a move for Gittens this week, after he also attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool. Gittens has played 106 games for Dortmund to date, registering 17 goals and 14 assists for the German club. Born in Reading, the England U21 international has spent his entire senior career with the Bundesliga side to date, having joined their youth team from Manchester City five years ago. Frank Leboeuf wants Chelsea to make an 'exception' and break from their transfer policy by signing experienced goalkeeper Maignan this summer. ''Magic Mike' is his nickname because he's so exceptional,' ex-Chelsea defender Leboeuf told ESPN FC when asked about his French compatriot. 'I think he will fit perfectly to Chelsea, if Chelsea have decided to give an exception in their trading business system. 'If they decide to go for Mike, that is a very good decision because the guy is a real good goalkeeper… I think he will be very useful to Chelsea.' It's already been a busy summer transfer window for Chelsea, who announced on Wednesday that they've signed Liam Delap from Ipswich. More Trending Delap, who has joined for £30m, is set to fight Nicolas Jackson to become the Blues' No.1 striker under head coach Enzo Marsesca. Estevao Willian, Dario Essugo and Kendry Paez are all arriving at Chelsea this summer too. It is thought that Chelsea have immediate first-team plans for Estevao, who has been compared to likes of Neymar and Lamine Yamal. Trevoh Chalobah hoping his England career lasts longer than brother Nathaniel's

The Chelsea defender has received his maiden call-up for Thomas Tuchel's squad for forthcoming games against Andorra and Senegal following a successful season. He will be hoping to get on the pitch in the World Cup qualifier against the minnows in Barcelona on Saturday or the City Ground friendly against the African side three days later. His sibling Nathaniel, who currently plays for Sheffield Wednesday, won his one and only England cap in a Nations League win over Spain in 2018, appearing for six minutes and 54 seconds as a late substitute. A post shared by Trevoh Chalobah (@yungchalobah) And Trevoh is hoping that this is just the start for him. The 25-year-old said: 'When I found out I phoned my dad, spoke to my family, let them know, and they were over the moon for me also. And my older brother as well, Nathaniel. He was happy for me also. 'Obviously, him being here also, and to see his younger brother do the same, it was a very proud moment for him. And hopefully I can be here even more. 'It's been a journey for my parents. Obviously, they've seen the highs and lows, and they've been there every single step of the way. It's a good moment for them to share.' Chalobah is one of five Chelsea players in the squad and he knows boss Tuchel well as the German handed him his Stamford Bridge debut. It has been an impressive season for Chalobah as he starred on loan at Crystal Palace before returning to Chelsea to help the Blues to Conference League glory and Champions League qualification, with a trip to the United States for the Club World Cup still to come. He added: 'Individually for me, it's been a very good season. This has been one of my goals, and it's good to share with the Chelsea players. 'It just shows the quality that Chelsea produce and the players, it's good to be here with them also and share that moment. 'They've obviously eased me in here and helped me. As I said, it just shows the quality and the players Chelsea are producing this over the years, it's been amazing. 'I'm here, being called up to England, and it's going to keep carrying on hopefully.' While most of the England squad will be heading on holiday after the Senegal match, Chalobah and his Chelsea team-mates will be going to the US for the revamped Club World Cup. He said: 'This is the time after the internationals you probably want a holiday. But it's going to be physically tough, it's a different environment. 'But it's important, us as players want to be competing at the highest level and playing against very good teams. This is what footballers want to be doing, and hopefully getting a trophy.'

Heartbreaking Michael Schumacher update as F1 insider opens up

Michael Schumacher is still fighting after suffering a severe brain injury in a skiing accident in December 2013, with the F1 legend continuing to receive round-the-clock care. Formula 1 enthusiasts have been informed that they are likely to never hear from legendary driver Michael Schumacher again after his horrifying ski accident more than a decade ago. The 56-year-old German continues to receive constant care from a dedicated medical team and his devoted wife, Corinna, following a tragic skiing accident in December 2013. ‌ Schumacher, who won seven world titles, is arguably the most iconic name and face in F1. However, he has been kept out of the public eye since suffering a severe brain injury after striking his head on a rock in the French Alps. ‌ Medical professionals placed him into an induced coma which lasted for 250 days before Schumacher was eventually allowed to return home and continue his treatment. His family have fiercely guarded his privacy, with Schumacher now entirely dependent on caregivers. Updates have been few and far between, but it's been reported that the stricken racer can no longer speak. F1 fans have clung to hope for 11-and-a-half years that they'll catch another glimpse of Schumacher, who remains tied for Drivers' Championships with Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari's current icon. However, in a recent interview, those hopes have been dashed. Craig Scarborough, who has covered the sport for approximately 25 years and interviewed Schumacher multiple times, recently spoke to the Sun and revealed details about his condition, reports the Mirror. "I spoke to someone who is very, very close to him and they just explained we're not going to hear any more from him," Scarborough said. "He's in a comfortable position as far as he can be with his state of health." Devoted fans will be heartened to know that Schumacher, having recently become a grandfather following his daughter Gina's childbirth, is coping as well as possible given the dreadful predicament. However, those who were intimately acquainted with him often choose not to dwell on his present condition. ‌ Commenting on the matter, Flavio Briatore, Schumacher's previous team principal at Benetton and current head honcho at Alpine, shared with Corriere della Sera: "If I close my eyes. I see him smiling after a victory. I prefer to remember him like that rather than him just lying on a bed." These reflections are matched by remarks from Schumacher's former spouse, Elisabetta Gregoraci, who disclosed in 2020: "Michael doesn't speak; he communicates with his eyes. Only three people can visit him, and I know who they are." It is widely believed that one of the trio permitted to visit Schumacher outside his immediate family is ex-Ferrari boss Jean Todt, who lamented in 2022: "I can see him but of course, what I miss is what we used to do together. I watch Grands Prix with Michael." ‌ Mick Schumacher, Michael's 26 year old progeny, took part in Formula 1 contests for Haas in both 2021 and 2022. Scarborough emphasises that Mick's presence is crucial for Michael's wellbeing and commends the family's decision to uphold their privacy. "I think a lot of people demand stuff from him and I think that's wrong," Scarborough added. "He is himself, and his family have a lot to contend with. Until you've cared for somebody, I don't think anyone realises the emotion and the physical up to our free weekly F1 newsletter, Pit Lane Chronicle, by entering your email address below so that every new edition lands straight in your inbox!"The fact that they have been bold enough to withdraw from public life and not be tempted to do exclusives out there to various people, I think, is noble, and I hope that continues. ‌ "I hope they can find happiness in the situation they find themselves in. He was a guy who enjoyed his personal time. "He loved his family. He did lots of lovely things. He clearly liked a drink and he loved a big cigar. But he had lots of time to bring up his son." Corinna, who married Schumacher in 1995, opened up on his condition during a 2021 Netflix documentary. "We're together," she said. "We live together at home. We do therapy. "We're trying to carry on as a family. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he's comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will. We're trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does."
