Two shrimpers – ages 20 and 21 – drown as others jump in to help, FL cops say
The Palatka Police Department identified them as 20-year-old Wilbert Rivera Cifuentes and 21-year-old Deyfri Roblero Morales.
Law enforcement began searching for the men the evening of July 21 after getting a call that two people fell in the St. Johns River while shrimping from the dock near a gazebo area of the Palatka Riverfront, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.
Several others jumped in the water to help, but the two men slipped under the water and never resurfaced, law enforcement said.
'Upon arrival, officers learned that a group of five to six Hispanic males had entered the river in an attempt to retrieve an object,' police said in a news release. 'During the effort, two individuals — both reportedly unable to swim — were seen struggling in the water before going under.'
When McClatchy News reached out to clarify what item had fallen in the river, police said they didn't have additional information to share.
Divers and marine units with the sheriff's office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission retrieved the men's bodies at around 10:30 a.m. July 22, according to police.
Palatka is in northeast Florida, about a 60-mile drive southwest from Jacksonville.
Drowning
At least 4,000 people die from drowning every year in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and drowning is a leading cause of death for children.
Some factors can make drowning more likely, including not knowing how to swim, a lack of close supervision, not wearing a life jacket and drinking alcohol while recreating near or in water.
The National Drowning Prevention Alliance said there are tips to help keep you safe in the water, including checking local weather conditions, never swimming alone and choosing the right equipment.
'Don't hesitate to get out of the water if something doesn't feel right,' the group said on its website. 'Whether it's that the current is getting rough, rain has started to fall, or your body is just not responding like you would like it to due to fatigue or muscle cramps, then just leave and return to the water another day. It's always a good thing to trust your instincts.'

Arrest made in frightening Orange County road-rage related hate crime
A 54-year-old Irvine man has been arrested and is facing charges in connection with a road rage-related hate crime and investigators believe there could be additional victims, officials announced Thursday. The alleged assault unfolded on July 22 at around 9:30 a.m. on Sand Canyon Avenue near Interstate 5, the Irvine Police Department said in a news release. It's unclear exactly how the beginning of the ordeal unfolded, though police said the victim was driving in the southbound lanes of Sand Canyon Avenue when he encountered Leon Tackett yelling at a Hispanic truck driver. After passing the initial altercation, Tackett followed the victim and proceeded to aggressively swerve into his lane multiple times, nearly causing several collisions. 'Tackett shouted racial slurs at the victim before throwing a cup of hot coffee into the victim's vehicle,' the release stated. 'The liquid landed on the victim's face, hands, and on the interior of his car.' Body of person who died on international flight to California reportedly unaccounted for Most of the scary interaction was filmed by the victim, with a family member later posting the footage to social media and reporting the incident to Irvine police on Wednesday evening. 'Today, at around 2:30 p.m., Tackett was taken into custody for a hate crime and aggravated assault,' investigators said. KTLA has so far been unable to locate footage of the incident posted to social media. Authorities believe there might be additional victims of the 54-year-old, as well as others who might have witnessed the most recent incident. City commissioner in Florida asked 12-year-old Illinois girl for nudes, cops say
An elected official in Florida is facing two dozen felony charges after a mom in Illinois reported he had been sexting her 12-year-old daughter over Snapchat, authorities said. St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard Del Toro Jr. announced July 24 that law enforcement conducted a traffic stop on Fort Pierce City Commissioner James Taylor, 38, and took him into custody. His arrest marks the culmination of a nearly yearlong investigation that began in August 2024 when the victim's mom filed a report with the Evanston Police Department, the sheriff said in a news conference. The mom of the now-13-year-old girl said a man had been inappropriately contacting her daughter over Snapchat beginning when she was 12, according to investigators. He sent her nude images of himself and asked her to do the same, Del Toro said. This went on for a couple months, investigators said. Detectives in Illinois traced the messages to a person in St. Lucie County and contacted the sheriff's office, which confirmed the suspect's IP address belonged to Taylor, the sheriff said. Investigators don't believe Taylor and the girl ever met in person. Taylor was pulled over during a traffic stop involving a 'ruse,' and was cooperating with detectives, according to the sheriff. 'I would say that he admitted his role in these and was very remorseful, obviously, I think mainly because he was caught,' Del Toro said. Taylor was elected Fort Pierce's District 2 commissioner in 2024 after serving on the county's planning and zoning commission for nearly a decade, according to his commissioner biography. He's involved in several local organizations, including the county's education board and theater advisory board. 'The City of Fort Pierce is aware of the recent arrest of Commissioner James Taylor,' a spokesperson for the city told McClatchy News in an email. 'We understand that this development may raise concerns within our community, and we want to reassure our residents that we remain committed to serving the public with integrity, transparency and accountability.'
