Fact Check: Straight out of Final Destination? Viral photo of theatre roof collapse is old

India Today26-05-2025

Life imitated art during a screening of the latest in the "Final Destination" franchise — a series of films about people dying in unlikely, horrible ways. On May 19, an Argentine woman's 29th birthday celebrations turned into a nightmare when the ceiling of the theatre collapsed during a "Final Destination Bloodlines" screening, causing more than just jump scares. The incident took place at Cinema Ocho in La Plata, the capital city of Argentina's Buenos Aires, possibly due to recent heavy rains. The woman, Fiamma Villaverde, escaped with a few injuries to her legs, back, and shoulder.advertisementA photo, allegedly from this incident, has now gone viral on social media with even a few news outlets using it while reporting the incident. The photo showed the movie still rolling as a firefighter looks at the broken ceiling, debris from which lies in front of the big screen. Many shared the photo on social media with the caption: "The ceiling collapsed in a theatre during screening of new 'Final Destination' movie".
India Today Fact Check found that the viral photo is from Washington in the US, when the ceiling of a theatre collapsed during the screening of "Captain America: Brave New World" on February 25.OUR PROBEReverse searching the photo led us to an NBC News report dated February 27, which stated that the viral photo was from the Liberty Cinema in Wenatchee, Washington. The ceiling of the theatre collapsed on February 25, when just two people were watching "Captain America: Brave New World", Marvel's latest addition to the "Captain America" franchise. No injuries were reported from the incident.advertisementWe also found a video report about this incident, showing the movie still being projected on the screen as debris from the broken ceiling lies in the theatre. This incident was widely reported at the time, with news reports using the photo in question. It's also noteworthy that the two collapses were of wildly different scales. According to the Argentine news outlet Infobae, only a small part of the ceiling came down during the "Final Destination" screening. But the collapse during the "Captain America" show was much bigger. Per reports, rafter beams, tiles, and other ceiling material fell on the front row and apron of the theatre. Thus, it is clear that an old photo was falsely linked to the recent Argentina theatre ceiling collapse.

‘Have affection for Messi because he has always respected me' says Ronaldo, Lamine Yamal hails Ronaldo as ‘legend' before Nations League final

There might be some fans who are passionately divided into camps based on who they like – Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, but there is respect between the two players themselves. Recently. Ronaldo yet again stressed a point that he has made over the years. 'I have affection for Messi, although we have been rivals for many years. As I have said in several interviews, we were on stage for 15 years. I translated for him at the galas. I have affection for him because he always respected me a lot,' Ronaldo said ahead of Portugal's game against Spain in the Nations League final on June 8. Ronaldo also made a revelation, saying that he was wooed by Argentine clubs to play for the Club world cup in Argentina. He didn't specify which club but considering two Argentine clubs – Boca Juniors and River Plate – made it to the world cup, it has to be one of them. Ronaldo also stressed that he won't be playing the tournament. 'I'have had invitations to play in the Club World Cup from Argentina. You never know, time is yours. I'm 40, but I can't say I'll never drink from this water,' he laughed at the press conference. 'I think it's difficult, but I really like it. I've never been to Argentina, but I want to.' Ronaldo's wife hails from Argentina. Spain's Lamine Yamal hailed Ronaldo, while talking about the final of the Nations League. 'Cristiano Ronaldo is a legend. I have a lot of respect for him, but I'll do my job, which is to win, and that's it.' Yamal also spoke about the fight for the Ballon d'Or, 'The most important thing is to talk on the pitch. Dembele (other candidate for the award) is a great player; we saw that in the Champions League. If he has to win, he will, but I am very happy to have made it to the final.' A day earlier, the celebrated coach Pep Guardiola had raved about Yamal, but also said 'sorry' to the young Spaniard who plays for Barcelona, as he felt no one can be compared with Messi. 'It's surprising what everyone says, and it's true: you only acquire this maturity at 24, 25 years old… Sometimes it seems like a player with so much talent, it seems like you have to take a chance on every play. Every play you have to shoot a three-pointer like Curry. No. He comes here, one touch, and now I rest for three minutes. And now he comes another touch. And now I make a little drive and I pass it again. And now I'm going to win the game,' Guardiola told DAZN. 'It's about understanding the game based on… it's really surprising, the truth is that we at Barça are very lucky to have found a kid again who has a perspective, I'm not going to say like Leo, I'm really sorry but Leo, for me there will be no one, no one, no one in the world like the Argentine, it's impossible.'

'Cool' & gaining popularity: How chess became a content machine

To a lot of people, chess remains a very serious pursuit. But it's also at odds with how the game, over the last few years at least, has become 'cool'. It's snackable, memeable and there's content to be had in a lot of ways. You open Insta and there's a chessfluencer giving you a breakdown on how to do a Fool's Mate (one of the quickest ways to checkmate). At the ongoing event in Stavanger for example, there's a four-member social media team, including one from ChessBase India. As soon as PSG posted the image of Gukesh trying to process what had just happened, the team felt extra happy. Because the game — even at the elite level — doesn't lend itself automatically to sponsors and generous funding from corporates, tournament organisers love getting eyeballs like these. Srinath Narayanan, one of the brains behind the nascent Chennai Grand Masters meet, in an interaction with The New Indian Express a few days ago, had mentioned that there could be an inherent bias towards inviting GMs with bigger social media footprints if their profiles are similar. "For example, if you are looking to invite a player rated 2675 or thereabouts to your event and you have only one slot, you may go towards the player with x number of social media followers." Whether by chance or design, chess is also catching on to the trend of hyping up the many young players. Take the case of 11-year-old Faustino Oro, an Argentine prodigy. An International Master, Oro is nicknamed as chessi. A few days ago, Oro faced off against the legendary Viswanathan Anand in a two-game showdown in Italy. Ever since the pandemic began, a lot of stakeholders have pumped in money into one-off events like these because they know this is now content (Hans Niemann played Anish Giri in a similar standalone encounter several days ago). "Though I play less these days," Anand tells The New Indian Express, "these kind of events are nice. You get to go to Italy... the glamour clearly attracted me there, Andrea Bocelli (musician) is playing there. When I get there, I was like 'what the hell if I lose, nobody will let me forget it'. It's not like I never have second thoughts... you have noticed that I don't play that many serious events." Not just Anand, who is, at best, a semi-retired pro. Even some of the players inside the Top-10 play exhibition matches like this because there is a demand for these events. Wherever there's demand, there's supply. It's just basic economics in this context. hugely successful 'Title Tuesday' is also a direct product of games, at least in part, being driven by content. It existed as a corner on the website as a monthly game in 2014. After the pandemic, it's played every Tuesday with over 900 players and a proper prize fund. On a dark, grim and wet Tuesday afternoon, Lokesh Natoo, a chessfluencer with over a lakh subscribers across his social media channels, rushes out with his phone to capture the likes of Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura entering the building, walk down a flight of steps and go inside the playing hall. He spends some 10 minutes editing it, putting in some BGM before uploading it as a reel. As of Thursday, that video has given him over eight million impressions. Content, he says.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls: When can you expect the 4v4 tag team fighter to go live?

Sony's latest State of Play showcase has revealed the most unexpected. While rumours have swirled for years about a stage fighter game from Marvel, few expected Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Soul from Arc System Works, the masters behind Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ. Even more shocking? This time, it's not Capcom holding the reins. Unlike the classic Marvel vs. Capcom series, Tōkon will be more welcoming, like the Marvel Rivals. 'From the beginning, we aimed to make MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls a title that could be enjoyed by a wide variety of players,' said Kazuto 'Pachi' Sekine, Director/Battle Director at Arc System Works. 'Generally, a team VS fighting game requires the player to learn multiple characters, but for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, you only need to master one character in order to play the game.' 'We have designed the mechanics in such a way that you can perform a variety of actions with either traditional fighting game inputs or simple inputs. With the press of a few buttons, multiple characters can appear on screen to provide backup or attack together—creating a new and exciting team VS battle experience,' he added. 'The inspiration for working on this project really came from a place of pure fandom, and wanting to say, 'Why isn't PlayStation in this space?'' said Reed Baird, Senior Producer at PlayStation Studios XDEV, per PlayStation Blog. 'So PlayStation approached us with this vision to bring Marvel back to the forefront of the tag fighting genre. And that got us really excited, because we had worked with them before on successful stuff like the Marvel's Spider-Man franchise with Insomniac,' Michael Francisco, Sr. Product Development Manager at Marvel Games, echoed the same.
