Phillies Announced They Moved Aaron Nola to 60-Day Injured List Amid Roster Move
Phillies Announced They Moved Aaron Nola to 60-Day Injured List Amid Roster Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies lost starting pitcher Aaron Nola for a significant amount of time already, and there is reasonable concern after he suffered a new setback in his ribs. He initially was expected to be back soon, but his issue has prolonged his return to the mount. Advertisement According to a new announcement made by the Phillies on Twitter/X, Nola was dealt even more bad news. They called up Buddy Kennedy and sent down Weston Wilson, meaning the team needed a new 40-man roster spot. To make that spot open, the Phillies put Nola on the 60-day injured list. This decision from the Phillies organization points towards Nola not returning to the club for a while. His timeline originally had him ready to go before the All-Star break. But, a prior setback pushed it passed the All-Star break, and this now could make his absence even longer. Nola could now be out into August, something that cold affect the team's plans at the trade deadline. Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola (27) throws a pitch during the first inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citizens Bank Streicher-Imagn Images While the Phillies have plenty of starting pitchers in the organization, the decision made on Nola is a tough blow for the Phillies. Losing more than half a season of Nola in the rotation will sting, even though he struggled so far this season. Advertisement Nola was 1-7 with a 6.16 ERA before he was placed on the injured list. He started on the 10-day injured list before being transferred to the 15-day injured list. But, after this new announcement, he's now on the 60-day injured list. His progression in recovering from what was initially a foot issue went well, but the rib issue was a huge setback in his return to the mound. It reset his recovery timeline, and provided a different level of pain for Nola to deal with. After this update from the Phillies, the wait is expected to be even longer for Nola's return. In the meantime, Mick Abel and potentially, Andrew Painter, will take over in his absence. Jesús Luzardo Discusses Playing 'Real Baseball' With Phillies
Jesús Luzardo Discusses Playing 'Real Baseball' With Phillies originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As with most arms in the Philadelphia Phillies' rotation, Jesús Luzardo is having a mostly successful 2025 campaign. Advertisement Since being acquired from the Miami Marlins for two prospects, Luzardo has struck out 97 batters in 83.2 innings. He had carried a 2.15 ERA through May 25th before two starts of his went sideways fast. Aside from those hiccups, he's been a valuable addition to the club - and Luzardo isn't taking the change for granted. "I didn't know what to expect coming into a team with such high expectations," Luzardo said during an interview on The Phillies Show. "It's blown me away how welcoming everyone is. How the guys who are 'Superstars' are just really down to earth guys... It's been awesome to be a part of it." Jesús Luzardo started the year off so strong that he was a dark horse Cy Young candidate. While the two blowouts dismissed that, he is still putting together a good Streicher-Imagn Images Originally from Peru, Luzardo went to high school between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, just north of Miami. So while the trade took him much farther from home - albeit with the benefit of traveling back twice a year in divisional series - he's embraced the new culture in Philly. Advertisement "Playing in Miami - it was home for me, so that was great," Luzardo said. "But at the same time, when you're not pitching in front of 40,000 (fans) like you are here every night... That's something you don't really see all the time and it's some of the most fun I've had playing baseball since I was in high school." "This is real baseball. Not a knock on anywhere else that I've been, but you could feel the atmosphere, the home field advantage, the buzz around the city. Going into a game, you just see the streets flooded with Phillies gear. The stadium's packed with everyone walking in. It's a good time." With the season approaching its halfway point, Luzardo is tasked with helping a suddenly short-staffed group of starters maintain a playoff position. And unlike in 2023, when the Marlins had shut him down for Tommy John surgery by the time they made it to the Wild Card, he looks to stay healthy and contribute into the Phils' latest October push. Cristopher Sánchez Makes Phillies' Longest Start of 2025 in Marlins Finale
Cristopher Sánchez Makes Phillies' Longest Start of 2025 in Marlins Finale originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cristopher Sánchez has been taking the ball every fifth day and giving the Philadelphia Phillies good results. Doing so is a lot simpler than it sounds, but just three months into the four-year extension he signed last June, Sánchez is making that deal look like a bargain. Advertisement That continued Thursday night, when Sánchez threw eight innings of one-run ball, limiting the Miami Marlins to five hits while striking out four and walking none. It was the first time all season that a Philly starter recorded an out in the eighth inning. It was also Sánchez's fourth straight quality start and the 10th time he's limited an opponent to two runs or fewer over five-plus innings. His ERA now sits at 2.87, becoming the fourth Philly starter to lower it below 3. After the game, he described his mindset on wanting to go deep into starts: "That's always my goal," Sánchez said on the NBC Sports Philadelphia postgame show. "To stay in the game as long as I can and give a chance to my team to focus on the offensive end." Advertisement "If you ask any starter, they're going to say the same... every single starter wants to go seven, eight, or even a complete game every single time that they're on the mound." Cristopher Sánchez continued his dominance over the Marlins on Thursday - he now carries a 1.27 career ERA against them, the lowest versus any team he's Navarro-Imagn Images Sánchez had a chance to go the distance in this one, as he wrapped up the eighth at 91 pitches. But manager Rob Thomson elected to send in Orion Kerkering for the last three outs. He was successful in securing the save. "I talked with him, and I think he was ready to come out," Thomson said. "He was a little bit gassed. But if I had asked him to go out (for the ninth), he would have."
