Chipper Jones and Marquis Grissom to manage in All-Star Futures Game
NEW YORK (AP) — Braves Hall of Famer Chipper Jones and Marquis Grissom will be managers for the All-Star Futures Game on July 12 at Truist Park in Atlanta.
Jones will head the NL team and Grissom the AL team, Major League Baseball said Monday. Players for the game are drawn from affiliates of the 30 MLB clubs.
Jones was an eight-time All-Star third baseman who spent his entire career with Atlanta, hitting .303 with 468 homers and 1,623 RBIs from 1993-2012. He won a World Series title in 1995 and earned election to the Hall of Fame on his first ballot appearance in 2018.
Grissom spent the 1995 and 1996 seasons with the Braves, also earning a World Series ring. He was a two-time All-Star outfielder, hitting .272 with 227 homers and 967 RBIs for Montreal (1989-94), Atlanta (1995-96), Cleveland (1997), Milwaukee (1998-2000), the Los Angeles Dodgers (2001-02) and San Francisco (2003-05).
Jones' coaches include Mark DeRosa (bench), Andruw Jones (hitting), Tim Hudson (pitching), Tyler Flowers (first base), Kanekoa Texeira (third base), Mick Markakis (general coach) and Peter Moylan (bullpen).
Grissom's coaches include Jerry Manuel (bench), Fred McGriff (hitting), Marvin Freeman (pitching), Dale Murphy (first base), Brian Hunter (third base), Ryan Klesko (general) and Johnny Estrada (bullpen).

Here's how we got to Mahomes tweeting through the game. In the second inning, utility player Bailey Lindemuth hit a single into center field. That hit allowed outfielder Demi Elder, already on third base, to score, giving Texas Tech a 2-0 lead. That's when Mahomes rattled off his first tweet. He dropped three exclamation emojis and tagged the Red Raiders X account. Texas Tech kept Oklahoma from scoring for four innings with some excellent pitching from superstar ace NiJaree Candady and stellar defense from the team. But, Oklahoma is a dynasty for a reason, and down to their last possible out and last strike, outfielder Abby Dayton hit a two-run homer to tie it up. Oh, the drama. Mahomes, still watching, shared the saddest possible GIF of a child with a frown. However, Mahomes wasn't down for long because, minutes later, he posted "Go win it!", tagging Texas Tech's account again. Perhaps they heard him because outfielder Mihyia Davis hit a single, and her teammate Hailey Toney hit a clutch double off the wall, pushing Davis to 3rd. Then, the Red Raiders created a little magic with a timely fly ball from infielder Lauren Allred, sending Davis home and Texas Tech to the World Series. As you can imagine, Mahomes was seemingly stoked. He probably shouted when he tweeted "Ah! Let's go!" with a bunch of letters and then a Texas Tech GIF. Watching the Kansas City quarterback post his way through the Red Raiders' semifinal game was fantastic, and we can't wait to see him continue the journey for the Women's College World Series.

French Open: Lorenzo Musetti beats Frances Tiafoe to reach the French Open semifinals
PARIS (AP) — Lorenzo Musetti used his sleek one-handed backhand and sprint-then-slide court coverage to reach his first semifinal at the French Open, and second at a Grand Slam tournament, by beating Frances Tiafoe 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 Tuesday in the same stadium where he won a bronze medal at last year's Olympics. The eighth-seeded Musetti, a 23-year-old Italian, improved to 19-3 this season on red clay. When the match ended, he rolled up the right sleeve of his green shirt and flexed his biceps. He'll face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or Tommy Paul on Friday for a berth in the championship match. Musetti and No. 1 Jannik Sinner — who faces unseeded Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinals Wednesday — gave Italy two male quarterfinalists at Roland-Garros for the first time since 1973. Tiafoe also was part of a rare duo: He and Paul were the first American men to get to the round of eight in Paris since Andre Agassi in 2003 — and the first duo to do it in the same year since Jim Courier and Pete Sampras in 1996. And the 15th-seeded Tiafoe, a 27-year-old from Maryland, made it all the way to the quarterfinals without dropping a single set. But he was not quite up to the task against Musetti, who was a semifinalist at Wimbledon in 2024, and it showed right away. Unlike most top-level tennis tournaments, which rely on electronic line-calling, there are still humans on court at Roland-Garros to decide whether shots land in or out. The point of the match came in the third set's sixth game. Musetti stretched wide of the doubles alley near the net to reach a shot at a seemingly impossible angle. Tiafoe then did the same in response, sending his near the baseline. Musetti ran and, with his back to the net, twisted his body to somehow flick a low ball back with a half-swing. It worked, though, and Tiafoe — perhaps startled to see the point wasn't over — netted an awkward, shoulder-high volley. That set swung Musetti's way when he broke in its last game. On a 12-stroke exchange, Tiafoe tried an ill-advised and ill-struck drop shot that the speedy Musetti got to, conjuring up a down-the-line backhand winner. Now it was his turn to celebrate, punching the air and yelling. Musetti broke again to lead 2-0 in the fourth, and soon it was over. He is now 13-4 in his French Open career, and three of those losses came against an opponent ranked No. 1 — Novak Djokovic twice, Alcaraz once. The only way he'll need to deal with the top-ranked man again in Paris is if it's his pal Sinner standing across the net on Sunday with the trophy in the offing. ___

Hall of Fame QB Peyton Manning becomes latest sports celebrity to join NWSL Denver's ownership group
DENVER (AP) — Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning became the latest sports celebrity to join the ownership group of Denver's National Women's Soccer League expansion team on Tuesday. Manning follows two-time Olympic champion ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin, who was announced as an investor last month in a club that will make its debut next season. Manning and Shiffrin join an NWSL group in Denver led by controlling owner Rob Cohen. Denver was awarded the NWSL's 16th team earlier this year. 'Peyton's legacy as a champion and a leader is second to none,' Cohen said in a news release. 'His impact on Colorado sports is unmatched, and we're incredibly proud to have him as a partner. He brings passion, insight, and deep local roots — all of which will help us shape the future of Denver NWSL.' All around the NWSL, big-name athletes are investing in teams. Manning's brother, Eli, is part of Gotham FC, while Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is involved with the KC Current and NBA star James Harden backs the Houston Dash. Decorated Alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn supports the Utah Royals FC. Manning was a five-time MVP and two-time Super Bowl winner in a career that started with the Indianapolis Colts and ended in Denver after helping the Broncos to a title following the 2015 season. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021 after throwing for 71,940 yards with 539 touchdowns and 251 interceptions. Since his retirement, Manning has grown his entertainment company Omaha Productions, which produces ESPN's 'Manningcast.' The show is hosted by the Manning brothers and offers an alternate way to watch 'Monday Night Football.' 'It's a real honor to be part of something so meaningful to the Colorado community,' Manning said of joining Denver NWSL. 'I'm proud to support the growth of women's sports and excited to help build a club that our city and our state can rally behind.' Denver NWSL is building a 12,000-seat temporary stadium that will be its home during the 2026 and '27 seasons.
