Likhona Fose killer previously convicted for attempted murder
The matter has been postponed for sevens days to 18 June for a formal bail application.
The 39-year-old man charged with the brutal murder and mutilation of 14-year-old Likhona Fose appeared briefly in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, where his bail application was postponed amid strong opposition from the state.
Mduduzi Mnisi faces charges in connection with the death of the Grade 8 pupil from Ikusasalethu Secondary School in Braamfischerville, Johannesburg, whose mutilated body was discovered in an empty field on 1 June 2025.
The teenager's family believes her murder was motivated by homophobia, as she identified as lesbian.

Suspect in Likhona Fose's death has previous convictions
During the brief court appearance, Mnisi's legal representative revealed that his client has previous convictions for attempted murder and robbery.
The defence indicated that Mnisi intends to apply for bail and complained that he was not provided with a bed and a blanket when taken to the Krugersdorp Correctional Centre.
The magistrate classified the case as a Schedule six offence under the Criminal Procedure Act, which covers serious crimes including murder and human trafficking.
The matter has been postponed for seven days to 18 June for a formal bail application.
State advocate Zanele Chauke confirmed that the prosecution will oppose bail.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson for the Gauteng division, Phindi Mjonondwana confirmed the postponement of the proceedings.
'It's to allow the state to conclude its investigation in respect of the bail application that the accused wants to bring before court. So it will include the profiling of the accused, checking whether or not he has any previous convictions, whether or not he has any pending cases against him,' said Mjonondwana, explaining the state's approach to the SABC.

Investigation and arrest
The arrest came after an intensive investigation by the police's Occult Unit.
'The police's Occult Unit has been working hard to find the perpetrators following the gruesome murder of 14-year-old Fose. One person was taken in for questioning on Monday, 9 June 2025.
'He was then linked to the murder and charged accordingly,' said Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo.

Security measures and community response
High police visibility surrounded the court proceedings, with authorities anticipating significant public interest in the case.
Mjonondwana explained the security arrangements: 'Those are arrangements by the South African Police Service (Saps). Obviously, working closely with the court manager.
'But basically, it's just to ensure and promote the safety and security of people who will be attending this court case. They've obviously anticipated the large number of people attending.'
Community cooperation critical
Mjonondwana stressed the importance of community involvement in addressing such crimes.
'This battle needs us to work in unison with our communities. We need every hand on deck because this is a battle that we can only win if we work as a collective together with society, government departments working closely with society, because these crimes happen within our communities.'
She expressed gratitude for community cooperation in this specific case: 'We really need to also extend our gratitude to those members of society who remain vigilant and who come forward, as it has in this case, where information was provided by a witness who is within the community.'
The case will return to court on 18 June, where the state will present its opposition to bail while the defence seeks the suspect's release pending trial.

JOHANNESBURG - Police have dismissed a claim of a second suspect being arrested in connection with the murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose. On Wednesday, Gauteng Public Safety MMC, Mgcini Tshwaku, announced that a second suspect, a Pakistani shop owner, was arrested . He said that another suspect claimed to have been instructed by the alleged shop owner to commit the crime. The teen's mutilated body was found in an open veld, not far from her home in Durban Deep, west of Johannesburg , a day after she was reported missing. To date, only one suspect has been charged with her murder, and he appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates Court on Wednesday. Police have confirmed that they have not arrested a second suspect in connection with the murder of Fose. According to police, the allegations made by Tshwaku are false, and police continue to conduct further investigations into the case. On Wednesday, 39-year-old Mduduzi Mnisi, who was arrested for the crime earlier this week, made his first appearance at the Roodepoort Magistrates Court. During proceedings, it was revealed that Mnisi has faced a prior conviction for attempted murder and robbery for crimes committed in 2007. The case was postponed to next week to allow the state to gather further information. A bail application is also expected to be filed.

SCA Judge Cagney John Musi handed down judgment on Thursday, saying the leave to appeal has been granted. 'It is ordered that the respondents may be retried for the same offences in respect of which they were acquitted by the Free State High Court on 21 April 2023, as if they had not previously been arraigned, tried and acquitted: provided that a different Judge shall preside over the trial'. Nulane scam The Nulane scam case was one of two matters in which the state tried and failed to seek the extradition of Atul and Rajesh Gupta from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The case is based on allegations that R24.9 million was paid to Nulane Investment – a company owned by Sharma – to conduct a feasibility study for the Free State province's flagship Mohoma Mobung project, which paved the way for the controversial Estina/Vrede dairy project. Nulane was contracted by the provincial government on the basis that it had unique skills to perform the work. The state alleged that Nulane, however, had no employees on its books and in fact subcontracted Deloitte to produce the report, for which Deloitte was paid R1.5 million. It's alleged that the only change made to the Deloitte report was to identify Paras Dairy as a suitable implementing partner for the development of a milk processing plant in Vrede. ALSO READ: SCA asked to dismiss state's appeal on Nulane case amid questions about witness's testimony Acquittal In April 2023, seven of the eight accused, including former Free State government officials Peter Thabethe and Seipati Dhlamini, along with Nulane Investments director and Gupta associate Iqbal Sharma, successfully applied to be discharged under section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act (CPA) in the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein. High Court Acting Judge Nompumelelo Gusha also found former head of the Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Limakatso Moorosi, not guilty, and she was acquitted. Gusha, in her judgment, criticised the state's investigation and concluded that the testimony of the state's sole witness, Shadrack Cezula, who had been the acting supply chain manager at the Free State Department of Agriculture, was 'evasive'. She concluded that the state had failed to prove its case against the accused before the court. 'Errors of law' However, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) appealed the matter. The NPA's Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) maintained that Gusha erred on several key legal questions, which the SCA on Thursday concurred with. 'The High Court made numerous errors of law that resulted in the acquittal of the respondents. This is unfortunate, particularly in a case such as this, where it was prima facie established that scarce public funds were unlawfully extracted from the Department and channelled to the UAE, by fraud and the misuse of power. 'This subverted the aims of the Project to generate income through farming and alleviate poverty, undermines the functionality of democratic institutions, and endangers the rule of law. The trial in the High Court can be summed up in a single sentence: This was a failure of justice. Regrettably, this erodes public confidence in the criminal justice system.' Musi ruled.
