Likhona Fose killer previously convicted for attempted murder
The 39-year-old man charged with the brutal murder and mutilation of 14-year-old Likhona Fose appeared briefly in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, where his bail application was postponed amid strong opposition from the state.
Mduduzi Mnisi faces charges in connection with the death of the Grade 8 pupil from Ikusasalethu Secondary School in Braamfischerville, Johannesburg, whose mutilated body was discovered in an empty field on 1 June 2025.
The teenager's family believes her murder was motivated by homophobia, as she identified as lesbian.

Suspect in Likhona Fose's death has previous convictions
During the brief court appearance, Mnisi's legal representative revealed that his client has previous convictions for attempted murder and robbery.
The defence indicated that Mnisi intends to apply for bail and complained that he was not provided with a bed and a blanket when taken to the Krugersdorp Correctional Centre.
The magistrate classified the case as a Schedule six offence under the Criminal Procedure Act, which covers serious crimes including murder and human trafficking.
The matter has been postponed for seven days to 18 June for a formal bail application.
State advocate Zanele Chauke confirmed that the prosecution will oppose bail.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson for the Gauteng division, Phindi Mjonondwana confirmed the postponement of the proceedings.
'It's to allow the state to conclude its investigation in respect of the bail application that the accused wants to bring before court. So it will include the profiling of the accused, checking whether or not he has any previous convictions, whether or not he has any pending cases against him,' said Mjonondwana, explaining the state's approach to the SABC.

Investigation and arrest
The arrest came after an intensive investigation by the police's Occult Unit.
'The police's Occult Unit has been working hard to find the perpetrators following the gruesome murder of 14-year-old Fose. One person was taken in for questioning on Monday, 9 June 2025.
'He was then linked to the murder and charged accordingly,' said Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo.

Security measures and community response
High police visibility surrounded the court proceedings, with authorities anticipating significant public interest in the case.
Mjonondwana explained the security arrangements: 'Those are arrangements by the South African Police Service (Saps). Obviously, working closely with the court manager.
'But basically, it's just to ensure and promote the safety and security of people who will be attending this court case. They've obviously anticipated the large number of people attending.'
Community cooperation critical
Mjonondwana stressed the importance of community involvement in addressing such crimes.
'This battle needs us to work in unison with our communities. We need every hand on deck because this is a battle that we can only win if we work as a collective together with society, government departments working closely with society, because these crimes happen within our communities.'
She expressed gratitude for community cooperation in this specific case: 'We really need to also extend our gratitude to those members of society who remain vigilant and who come forward, as it has in this case, where information was provided by a witness who is within the community.'
The case will return to court on 18 June, where the state will present its opposition to bail while the defence seeks the suspect's release pending trial.

Cop killers sentenced to life in jail for assassination of police officer
Warrant Officer Phumlani Dastile was murdered in Zwelitsha in revenge for the conviction of one of the suspects. Three men accused of the calculated assassination of a 44-year-old detective have been sentenced to life in jail. The trio, 25-year-old Thando 'Flokkie' Mangolwane, 24-year-old Siyabonga 'Jacks' Zimela and 29-year-old Siphelo 'Spikiri' Bebe appeared in the Bisho High Court in the Eastern Cape on Monday, where the sentence was handed down. Warrant Officer Phumlani Dastile was murdered in Zwelitsha on 23 August 2021 in revenge for the conviction of Bebe, the mastermind, who was already serving multiple life sentences for violent crimes committed in 2018. Trial National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said the court found the accused's denials to be inconsistent and improbable against the weight of the evidence. 'Cellphone records placed them at the crime scene, while communications confirmed their planning and execution roles. Mangolwane was identified as one of the triggermen, while Nojaholo drove the getaway vehicle.' In aggravation of sentence, the state's attorney, Advocate Louis Sinclair, argued that the assassination was a 'senseless killing of a police officer simply carrying out his duty'. 'It was a direct assault on the rule of law. In crimes of this gravity, the personal circumstances of the accused must take a backseat. Minimum sentences must apply, or else our country risks descending into lawlessness.' ALSO READ: Cop killers and armed robbers shot dead by police in KZN Assassination Tyali said in addition to the life sentences, Mangolwane and Zimela each received 15 years' imprisonment for unlawful possession of a semi-automatic firearm and three years for possession of ammunition. These will run concurrently with the life terms. Tyali said Bebe orchestrated the hit using a cellphone from inside his prison cell. 'He recruited Mangolwane and Zimela through a mutual acquaintance, Kwanga Nojaholo, who later turned state witness under Section 204 of the Criminal Procedure Act. The pair travelled from Khayelitsha in the Western Cape to carry out the murder. 'On the day of the crime, Warrant Officer Dastile was ambushed and shot multiple times at close range outside Monde's Tavern in Zone 4, Zwelitsha, in broad daylight. Evidence led by the prosecution included cellphone data, surveillance footage, post-mortem results and testimony from key witnesses, including the accused's girlfriends, which confirmed their movements and roles,' Tiyali said. Sentence welcomed The Director of Public Prosecutions in the Eastern Cape, Barry Madolo, praised the prosecution and investigation teams, saying the 'murder of a police officer is not only an attack on an individual but on the justice system itself'. 'This sentence reaffirms our commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that those who harm law enforcement officers face the full might of justice,' Madolo said. KwaMashu man seeks bail in connection with deadly taxi violence shooting
A man from KwaMashu charged with Newlands West deadly shooting is set to apply for bail. Image: File A 27-year-old man from KwaMashu will be applying for bail later in August, as he is alleged to be one of the suspects involved in the deadly taxi violence shooting that happened in January 2024 at Newlands West near Midway Crossing. The shooting spree left eight people dead, and 11 people survived it. Thamsanqa Zikhali made a brief appearance on Friday at the Durban Magistrate's Court, where State prosecutor Advocate Sanele Ntombela told the court that the State would be opposing bail. He said Zikhali's bail is under Schedule 6 of the Criminal Procedure Act. Zikhali is charged with conspiracy to commit murder, three counts of murder, seven counts of attempted murder, two counts of possession of a fully automatic firearm, possession of a firearm without a licence, and possession of ammunition. According to the State, Zikhali committed the offences with 25-year-old Sphelele Gumede from Pietermaritzburg. Gumede was first arrested, and his matter is now in the High Court. Additionally, the State alleges that the pair, along with others, planned to kill members of the taxi association operating from the Midway Crossing taxi rank. 'On January 11, 2024, the accused men drove to the taxi rank in a VW Polo, armed with rifles. When they got to the rank, they opened fire on people who were there,' the State said.

Director of Public Prosecutions void sees another delay in Danny Jordaan's fraud case
The suspension of Director of Public Prosecutions Andrew Chauke has affected the fraud case involving South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan. As a result, the case has been postponed for the umpteenth time. The fraud case involving South African Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan and the national soccer federation's chief financial officer Gronie Hluyo has been postponed until 12 September 2025. The pair appeared at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on Friday, 15 August, alongside their co-accused Trevor Neethling. The latter is the director of PR company Grit Communications, which Jordaan allegedly used to spruce up his image after he was accused of rape by singer and former ANC member of Parliament Jennifer Ferguson in 2017. DPP problems Neethling and his lawyer James Ndebele are still awaiting feedback from the office of the Johannesburg Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Ndebele submitted representations to the office of DPP Andrew Chauke, months before his subsequent suspension by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July 2025. Ndebele reiterated his stance that his client was caught in the middle of internal Safa conflicts that aimed to remove Jordaan from his seat. Ndebele also lambasted Chauke. In February, when Jordaan and his co-accused last appeared in court, Ndebele told the court that he had submitted representations to Chauke's office to have the matter thrown out of court as Neethling was a victim of Safa factionalism. On Friday, Ndebele told the court that Chauke had only corresponded with him in June, four months later. Even then, it was to check whether his submissions were in their final form — something Ndebele said he had already confirmed with the DPP in February. 'This highlights, with the utmost respect to him, Advocate Chauke's incompetence,' Ndebele told the court. 'I've maintained for the longest time in these proceedings that my clients (Neethling and his company) are collateral damage. They are caught in the crossfire of a political smear campaign vilifying Danny Jordaan,' Ndebele added. Justice delayed Jordaan and Hluyo's legal representative Victor Nkwashu once again fruitlessly argued for the case to be thrown out of court as it was ruining the public image of his clients. This has been his argument since the pair were arrested in November 2024. Hluyo and Jordaan's arrests followed a search and seizure at Safa House in March 2024. Nkwashu argued that his clients continued to suffer prejudice due to the ongoing case, hence they wanted it thrown out of court pending their review of the search and seizure. That matter itself has yet to commence. There is also another outstanding court proceeding that involves the three accused appealing against Magistrate Sheron Soko-Rantao's decision to dismiss their Section 342A application last year. That particular section of South Africa's Criminal Procedure Act addresses unreasonable delays in criminal proceedings. 'This brings us back to the application which we brought in December to have the matter removed from the roll. It was to avoid exactly this position that we are sitting in now. We are in the middle of August, from December 2024, when we said this matter will inevitably be humstrung by those high court applications,' Nkwashu stated. State prosecutor Moagi Malebati countered this argument, saying that approaching the high court to review the merits of the search and seizure was a strategic move by Jordaan and Hluyo to strengthen their bid to have the case thrown out of court according to Section 342A. 'Self-created emergency' 'This is a self-created emergency by the accused. If the accused did not approach the high court with a view to have the search and seizure declared unlawful, we would not be having this problem. Because they know very well that a trial within a trial in this forum could easily deal with those issues, even quicker than the high court,' Malebati said. Soko-Rantao expressed her frustration at having the matter once again postponed. She added that her hands were tied until at least the acting Johannesburg DPP assumed his role in September and pondered the merits of the submissions made by Ndebele, hence the postponement. The National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA's) Johannesburg spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane confirmed to journalists after court proceedings that Northern Cape DPP Mzukisi Sakata would temporarily replace Chauke. 'As the NPA it was impossible for us to preempt the suspension of the Director of Public Prosecutions… The minister has now appointed an acting DPP, who will assume their duties on 1 September,' Mjonondwane told journalists. 'We make a commitment as the NPA that as soon as he assumes duty, we will bring this matter to his attention and also inform him that the court has asked him to urgently deal with the matter of Jordaan and others. But there are also other outstanding matters that will seek his attention,' she added.
