Owners of pets lost in alleged funeral home scam come together for closure
Pet owners of an alleged cremation scam shared their stories, shed some tears and grieved together Sunday evening so that they can hopefully start to heal.
'This is Gotti,' one woman said.
Another woman said, 'This is Tinkerbell.'
One by one, people talked about their fur babies, and once again, cried and mourned their losses.
'This is Buddy,' a woman said through tears. 'This is killing me. He threw my baby in the garbage.'
The pain became more unbearable after Tiffany Mantzouridis, a former employee of Eternity Pet Memorial, helped bring the disturbing allegations to light last month.

'It's hard for me to process how somebody could do that because I got into this because I'm an empathetic person and I ended up in a position working for somebody who is the complete opposite of that,' Mantzouridis said.
Eternity Pet Memorial Owner Patrick Vereb is accused of scamming people who paid for pet cremations and burials. Instead, the AG's office said he threw more than 6,500 pets into landfills then gave owners ashes from other animals.

Pattie Levay cremated at least 11 dogs through Vereb from 2021 to 2024, the time period of the investigation. She believes 25 of her dogs could be in landfills.
'The first three days, I would have nightmares that they were trying to get out of the landfill, and I would see the bulldozer coming and just bulldoze them down and hear their screams,' Levay said.
Levay organized Sunday's memorial to honor all the lost pets and try to give their owners closure.

'My whole life has been dedicated to animals and knowing that I failed them, that I failed them so horrendously that they ended up in landfills, and this is why I'm doing this because I need help with my healing,' Levay said, choking back tears.
Heather Sphar of Charleroi said the ashes she has do not belong to her beloved Trixie.
'That's not her. I got the email saying that that's not her,' Sphar said. 'Heartbroken, sad, emotional. You do it because you want their remains to be with you the rest of your life and knowing that I don't have her just breaks my heart.'
Dozens of people came to the pavilion behind the Kingston Club for a pet blessing and to say goodbye one last time. Then, they sent bubbles up to their pets in heaven.
But what most of the pet owners want is to do right by their best friend.
'I'm angry because I don't have her,' Sphar said. 'We all want justice for what he has done, and I think he needs to rot in jail,'
Vereb is out on bail and is scheduled for an arraignment on June 18.

Trump lied about LA protests to deploy the National Guard. He wants violence.
Donald Trump, the president who glibly pardoned the men and women convicted in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol in 2021, wants you to believe that the second most populated city in America is in ruins, destroyed by 'insurrectionist mobs.' That's nonsense. Trump inhabits an imaginary, dystopian America spun from his opportunistic lies. The president wants you to believe, because it's politically expedient for him, that predominantly peaceful protests in Los Angeles over intentionally provocative raids by agents from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency are vast and violent. He wants you to believe that Los Angeles has burned. He wants you to believe that, as he posted on social media June 8, 'violent, insurrectionist mobs are swarming and attacking our Federal Agents,' and that the city is under siege from a 'Migrant Invasion.' I'll say it again: Our president inhabits an imaginary, dystopian America spun from his opportunistic lies. After promising to target 'criminals,' Trump's administration, to make up for the paltry number of actual criminals ICE agents have been able to find and deport, has resorted to going after immigrants waiting for work in Home Depot parking lots. It's targeting immigrants who are properly following the immigration process, posting ICE agents outside courthouses to snatch noncriminals who are seeking a better life. It's making a point of hitting a liberal city with a large immigrant population for one reason and one reason alone: Trump wants violence. He wants you to believe there are hordes of murderous immigrants making America dangerous and unlivable. He used that baseless imagery to justify ordering National Guard troops to Los Angeles, against the wishes of the California governor. Trump wants to normalize this kind of power grab. Because that's the kind of power you want if you exist in an imaginary version of America spun from opportunistic lies. Republican leaders want all of this as well. Trump is living, breathing evidence that the GOP wants power at any cost, and Republican lawmakers are more than happy to parrot their leader's xenophobic fearmongering. Despite years of screaming about 'government overreach,' they'll sit back and gladly watch Trump sic U.S. soldiers on American citizens and use a blue-state city as a test model for tyranny. Why? Because our president and members of his party inhabit an imaginary, dystopian America spun from their opportunistic lies. Opinion: Republicans, be so for real. This embarrassing government is what you wanted? California officials, from Gov. Gavin Newsom to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, have made clear they don't want or need the National Guard in the city. Over the weekend, there were isolated incidents involving property damage, vehicles burned and, as KLTA-5 reported, "LAPD said officers encountered demonstrators throwing 'concrete, bottles and other objects.' " Police responded with sizable force, from tear gas to rubber bullets and flash bangs. But overall, officials have said, and widespread reporting has supported, that the protests have been small and predominantly peaceful. Still, Trump told his millions of social media followers that he was sending federal forces to 'liberate Los Angeles from the Migrant Invasion, and put an end to these Migrant riots. Order will be restored, the Illegals will be expelled, and Los Angeles will be set free.' I repeat, because it bears repeating: Trump inhabits an imaginary, dystopian America spun from his opportunistic lies. On June 8, the same day Trump and Republicans were telling Americans that Los Angeles was a chaotic war zone, the Los Angeles Pride Parade went off in Hollywood without a hitch. And The New York Times reported: 'The chaotic demonstrations that consumed social media and cable news in recent days were concentrated around only a couple parts of the region ‒ the working-class suburb of Paramount, where federal agents clashed with protesters near a Home Depot, and downtown Los Angeles.' Opinion: Trump's mass deportation scheme is an insult to all of us The city is immense. The chaos, in terms of people and the extent of any damage, has been minimal. Yet Trump and his Republican enablers choose to live in an imaginary, dystopian America spun from their opportunistic lies. Making all of this worse, of course, is that the supposed need for mass deportations is built on lies. Lies about a 'migrant crime wave.' Lies about America being unsafe because of immigrants. If the ICE raids targeting Los Angeles are necessary, why aren't they also necessary in the red states one would assume Trump is more inclined to protect? Why are ICE agents not searching for undocumented workers on farms in Nebraska or in meat-packing plants in Indiana? Why are anti-ICE protests in red states not being met with equal federal force? Why go to one of the bluest cities in one of the bluest states? Why doesn't Trump simply let those Democrats deal with the alleged 'migrant crime' and focus on the 'real Americans' he claims to care about? Perhaps because this is all nonsense. Or a distraction from Trump's recent clash with Elon Musk or the criticism of his deficit-ballooning tax bill making its way through Congress. You're creating the conditions that you claim you're solving, and you're not. And you're putting real people's lives at risk.' Live updates: L.A. curfew enters second night as U.S. protests spread
A curfew for part of downtown Los Angeles continued for a second night Wednesday, as protests against the Trump administration's immigration raids continue in the city, where the president has tested legal limits by mobilizing National Guard troops and Marines. Speaking at a news conference Wednesday, L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman pushed back on claims the city is facing widespread destruction, stressing that '99.99 percent' of people living in the area 'have not committed any illegal acts in connection with this protest whatsoever.' The protests have spread to several other cities, including Chicago, New York, San Antonio and Spokane, Washington, which also instituted a curfew Wednesday night.

Man stabbed in car in Brentwood parking lot
The Brief A man was stabbed in his car in a Brentwood parking lot on Tuesday. Police arrested the suspected attacker after a good Samaritan followed him. It wasn't clear what led up to the stabbing. LOS ANGELES - Police arrested a man accused of stabbing another man in his car in a Brentwood parking lot on Tuesday. What we know The attack happened just before 10:30 a.m. in a Ralphs parking lot near the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Bundy Drive, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Anthony Gallegos saw the attack, and said he yelled at the man to stop. He told FOX 11 that the attacker reached into the driver's window and stabbed the driver several times in the back, while the driver tried to get out of the other side of the car. Video showed the victim getting out of the car covered in blood, shouting for help and for someone to call the police. SUGGESTED: Skydiving plane crashes in Tennessee with 20 people on board Gallegos and others shouted at the attacker, who ran off. A man claiming to be one of the victim's friends said he followed the attacker while on the phone with 911. Officers were able to track the suspect down and arrest him. First responders took the driver to the hospital. What we don't know Officials did not identify the alleged attacker. Witnesses told FOX 11 that the attacker appeared to be a homeless man, but the LAPD did not confirm that. The driver's condition was unknown as of Wednesday night. It was also not immediately clear what led to the stabbing.
