PTI banishes five MNAs from party
The opposition, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), on Sunday expelled five members of the National Assembly for going against the party line during the vote on the 26th Constitutional Amendment in the National Assembly in October last month.
According to separate notifications issued by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, the expelled members are Aurangzeb Khichi, Zahoor Hussain Qureshi, Usman Ali, Mubarak Zeb and Ilyas Chaudhry. These independent lawmakers were supported by the PTI in the 2024 general elections.
The similarly-worded notifications stated that these lawmakers violated the party instructions and voted in favour of the 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill on October 21, 2024, while the party in a meeting had unanimously decided to oppose the amendment.
"You are hereby declared to have violated your commitment, oath and loyalty to the Party. You have acted contrary to the instructions of the Party as you voted in favor of 26th Constitutional (Amendment) Bill 2024," said one of five notifications, sent to Qureshi.
"And by [that] conduct [you] have joined another Parliamentary Party in the National Assembly. You are therefore expelled from the Party (PTI) forthwith. Needless to add that you also stand disqualified on account of the aforesaid conduct," it added.
The 26th Amendment was passed with a two-thirds majority. Among the opposition parties, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) had supported the government after several rounds of negotiations. The PTI however, chose to oppose the bill. Yet the government was able to get five members on its side.
Soon after the bill was passed, the PTI decided to take legal action against its lawmakers who had violated the party policy. At that time, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had said that these lawmakers had been elected as independents; therefore, they were not bound by any party decision.
The PTI's notifications on Sunday said that notices were issued to the dissenting National Assembly members on November 5, 2024 to show cause why they "should not be declared to have defected" from the party, but "you did not respond to the notice".
The notifications also stated that these members deserved of disqualification from being elected representatives for joining another party. The PTI chairman demanded of the National Assembly speaker to disqualify that these members.
Among the expelled members Khichi was elected to the National Assembly from NA-159 Vehari-IV; Qureshi from NA-146 Khanewal-III; Usman Ali from NA.142, Sahiwal-II; Muhammad Ilyas Choudhry from NA.62, Gujrat-I and Mubarak Zeb from NA.8, Bajaur.

Only one in four MNAs attend budget session
A total of 78 Members of the National Assembly (25%) attended all 13 sittings of the 17th (Budget) session held from June 5 to 27, while 10 members (3%) remained absent throughout the session, according to official attendance records. The session began with strong participation — 83% attendance was recorded on the opening day when the Finance Bill 2025 was introduced. However, attendance declined to a session-low of 57% during the third sitting, which featured general budget discussions. Participation gradually recovered, peaking at 93% on the day the Finance Bill was passed. Lawmakers repeatedly voiced concern over the absence of key ministers during budget debates, prompting the Chair to direct relevant finance portfolio holders to attend. Records show that 235 MNAs (75% of the House) missed at least one sitting. Of these, only 79 (34%) formally submitted leave applications — 13 applied in advance, while 46 submitted applications after returning. Twenty lawmakers had their leave requests read mid-absence. Notably, 156 members (66% of absentees) failed to apply for leave altogether. Additionally, six MNAs submitted leave requests for previous sessions. Attendance varied across demographics: Female MNAs: 22 women (41% of all female members) — 19 on reserved and three on general seats — attended all sittings. Minority MNAs: All seven attended more than half the sittings; three attended every session. Male MNAs on general seats: 10 (4%) missed the entire session, 35 (14%) attended less than half, and 208 (82%) were present in more than half of the sittings, including 54 (21%) with full attendance. Regional attendance trends showed Islamabad Capital Territory leading with 100% attendance from all three of its MNAs. Punjab and Sindh followed, with 85% and 86% of MNAs respectively attending more than half of the sittings. In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 39 MNAs participated in over half of the sittings, with 15 attending all. Balochistan recorded 75% attendance in the same category. Party-wise attendance was highest among MNAs from PML-N, PPPP, MQMP, and SIC, most of whom attended more than half of the sittings. The sole MWMP lawmaker marked full attendance. Lawmakers from BAP, NP, and PML-Z were also largely present. However, PKMAP's only representative attended less than half of the session. The "Others" category includes parties with fewer than eight MNAs — such as BAP, MWMP, NP, PKMAP, PML, PML-Z, and IPP. The BNP's sole member has tendered resignation, but it has yet to be officially accepted. To prioritise budget debate, the National Assembly suspended routine proceedings, including Question Hour, Calling Attention Notices (CANs), and public importance matters. This suspension was approved in the second sitting, though only one of seven concerned ministers was present on that day.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi acquitted, Yasmin Rashid sentenced to 10 years in May 9 case

The court delivered its verdict in the case concerning inflammatory speeches and vandalism at the Sherpao Bridge. The court, which had completed final arguments from both the defence and prosecution, reserved its decision before announcing the ruling. The verdict stated that the ATC acquitted Qureshi, Azeem, and four other accused individuals due to insufficient evidence. However, the court found 10 others guilty and handed down 10-year prison sentences for their role in the violence that followed the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan. The case involves violent protests and damage caused to public and private property, including incidents of arson and vandalism, that erupted on May 9, following the arrest of the former prime minister. Earlier, an ATC in Sargodha sentenced Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly, PTI's Malik Ahmed Khan Bhachar, and other party workers to 10 years in prison each. They were found guilty of involvement in creating law and order disturbances, anarchy, and arson during the May 9 riots, which erupted following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan. The ATC judge delivered the verdict after hearing detailed arguments and finding that the prosecution had established its case. The defence counsels argued that the accused were not involved in the charges brought against them, claiming that these were politically motivated cases. May 9 Riots The May 9 riots erupted nationwide following the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan, after which PTI leaders and workers staged protests targeting both civil and military installations, including Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. The military condemned the events as a "Black Day" and decided to try the protesters under the Army Act. As a result of the unrest, many PTI members were arrested and tried in military courts. In December, a military court convicted 25 individuals, including Imran Khan's nephew, Hassan Khan Niazi, and later sentenced 60 more. In January, 19 convicts had their sentences pardoned following successful mercy appeals, although PTI expressed dissatisfaction over the limited number of pardons. The military trials had initially been halted following a Supreme Court ruling but were resumed following the court's instructions to finalise pending cases and announce judgments for those involved in the violent incidents.

PM reaffirms security of Chinese nationals as top priority

'The confidence of Chinese companies in the Pakistani economy is extremely important for our economic future,' he stated. 'China is our friendly country, and the safety of our Chinese brothers is our foremost responsibility,' PM Shehbaz said while noting that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) had entered its second phase, focused on business-to-business collaboration, further increasing the importance of secure conditions for Chinese citizens. In view of this, the premier directed authorities to take special measures at all airports to facilitate the arrival and departure of Chinese nationals. He also called for the inclusion of Safe City-standard surveillance systems in all upcoming housing projects.
