Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Jonas Hofmann has voiced his dissatisfaction with former head coach Xabi Alonso, revealing that the current Real Madrid manager failed to meet his expectations during their time together in Germany.
Alonso, who guided Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga title in the 2023–24 season, earned widespread acclaim for transforming the club into a dominant force. However, not everyone in the squad shared the same admiration for the Spanish tactician.
In a candid interview with Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger , Hofmann criticized Alonso for a lack of clear communication, suggesting the coach didn't always foster an environment of transparency and mutual respect.
'I expect a coach to address something directly when he notices something,' Hofmann said. 'There should be open and direct communication. A coach shouldn't wait longer than two weeks because I want to be in top shape to raise the training level. I would have expected a bit more from the coach.'
Hofmann, who had a productive 2023–24 season with 46 appearances, eight goals, and 12 assists, saw his role diminish significantly under Alonso last season, featuring in only 17 matches. This limited involvement left him feeling sidelined and unvalued, prompting him to reflect on his place within the team.
The 33-year-old revealed that he would have considered leaving Leverkusen had Alonso remained in charge. However, with Erik ten Hag now appointed as Leverkusen's new head coach, Hofmann is approaching the 2025–26 campaign as a clean slate.
'New coach, new opportunity. I'm a Bundesliga kid. I'm fighting my way back. I feel comfortable, but under Xabi Alonso, I probably would have considered a move,' he admitted.
'Personally, I'm putting last season in a box and don't want to take it out again. It was very disappointing for me, what happened there and how it played out. That's not what I'm aiming for.'
Despite the sour note left by Alonso's tenure, at least from Hofmann's perspective, there's a sense of renewed purpose as the midfielder prepares to impress under Ten Hag. With a contract at Leverkusen running until summer 2027, Hofmann is determined to reestablish himself as a key figure in the squad.
Leverkusen will begin their 2025–26 campaign on August 15, when they face SG Sonnenhof Großaspach in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. For Hofmann, it's not just a new season, it's a shot at redemption.

Florian Wirtz says pressure of Liverpool price tag ‘doesn't matter': ‘I just want to play football'

Florian Wirtz insists his price tag will not weigh him down at Liverpool as he prepares for a season of scrutiny. The 22-year-old attacker will become the most expensive player in the history of British football if the add-ons in his £116million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen are triggered. Wirtz knows the rest of the Premier League will be watching closely as expectations rise, but insists he's ready for the challenge. Advertisement 'I just want to play football and how much money the clubs pay between each other, it doesn't matter,' the German said to reporters in the mixed zone after the pre-season friendly with Athletic Club. 'I came because I thought I could fit in this team and I am enjoying to stay with these players. I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch and the manager gives it to me. 'I will try to find the right places to be and the right spaces to get on the ball and to be dangerous and create chances.' Wirtz says he has settled in well and is enjoying the new environment after leaving Germany for the first time in his short career. His experienced team-mates have already warned him what to expect when the Premier League starts but he says that doesn't faze him. 'They tell me it's more intense and more physical and that every player is really strong, really fast,' he adds. 'I am really looking forward to play there and experience some differences to Germany but I think there is also something I can learn and make me better. 'It is good that we have a few players that arrive at the same time so we can connect and talk to each other about how we deal with things That helps when you come to a new team. 'The big challenge is to win the title again and it is the most difficult thing to do. 'I will just try to create chances and work hard off the ball and run a lot to help make the team better.' It's early days for the record signing but already he's beginning to show the impact he can have. Arne Slot has worked closely with him in training to show exactly where he wants him to fit in. For a player so gifted on the ball, it's striking how much effort he puts in off it. In Liverpool's win over Athletic Club in the final pre-season outing of the summer, Wirtz was both industrious and creative. What stood out most was his movement off the ball. He consistently found space in between the lines, allowing team-mates Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai the freedom to flourish close by. Advertisement As Wirtz told reporters ahead of the new season, he's committed to putting in the hard yards for the team and that will only strengthen the Premier League champions. His ball-carrying ability and talent in leading counter-attacks are well known, but it's the all-round nature of his game that makes him such and exciting prospect.
