India Always On Wrong Side Of DRS? Sunil Gavaskar Hints Conspiracy Theory After KL Rahul's Dismissal In 3rd Test

NDTV4 hours ago
The Day 5 of the third India vs England Test at Lord's began on a horrific note for the visitors as Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Washington Sundar departed in quick succession. India needed 135 at the start of the day to win, but those three dismissals pushed India on the brink of a loss in the third Test. While Pant fell to an absolute ripper by Jofra Archer, Sundar was undone by a dream caught and bowled dismissal by the same England star.
It was, however, the dismissal of KL Rahul that got former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar talking. The batter was out LBW off Ben Stokes but he was given not out initially. Rahul tried to defend the ball but his bat bat was stuck behind the pad. The ball struck his front pad and Stokes was super confident he had got the Indian batter. The DRS showed ball was hitting the middle stump.
Gavaskar did not agree with how the DRS showed the ball's trajectory.
"Surprisingly, this one didn't bounce that much. When Indian bowlers were bowling balls were going above the stump mostly in reviews," Gavaskar said on air. Michael Vaughan, who was his fellow commentator, tried to diffuse the situation.
"I am questioning the technology,' Gavaskar then said.
On Day 4 Sunil Gavaskar had blasted the ball-tracking technology after England's Joe Root survived a review during Day 4 of the third Test between England and India.
During the 38th over of England's second innings, Root was hit on his pads by a ball from Siraj and the Indian players were convinced that he was out. While the umpire signalled not-out, Siraj and captain Shubman Gill decided to go for the review. Replays showed that although the leg stump was completely visible at the time of impact, the ball moved quite a bit and it was ruled 'umpire's call'. However, Gavaskar was not happy with the dismissal as Siraj and the rest of the team was left disappointed.
"You're saying it was going to kiss the leg stump? There's no way. It was knocking the leg stump off. The only good thing is that India have not lost the review," Gavaskar said on commentary.
Similar sentiments were echoed by former England batter Jonathan Trott as well.
"I am flabbergasted. Having looked at that replay, I thought it was crashing into the inside part of the leg stump. Watching it in real time, I couldn't believe it was missing," Trott added on air.

Ravindra Jadeja Defies England With Help Of Gritty Tail In Lord's Test

Ravindra Jadeja batted efficiently alongside India's usually fragile tail, taking the visitors to 30 runs shy of the victory target of 193 in an extended afternoon session on day five of the third Test on Monday. Jadeja (56 batting off 162 balls) showed the stomach for fight as he batted out the two and a half hour session with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj (2 batting off 20). India were 163 for nine at tea, collecting 41 runs in the session for the loss of Bumrah (5 off 54). It was Jadeja's fourth half-century in a row and came in the most trying circumstances with India staring at a big defeat at 112 for eight at lunch. In the morning, the match looked as good as over for India whose inexperienced batting line-up failed in its first major test and surrendered against the Jofra Archer-led England pace attack. India, who batted brilliantly in the first two Tests, could not stand the test of Archer and Co. on a spicy day five pitch. The outcome was a foregone conclusion when Chris Woakes had Nitish Reddy caught behind at the stroke of lunch to leave India tottering at 112 for eight chasing 193. However, Jadeja's steely effort created a glimmer of hope for India. Starting the day at 58 for four and needing another 135 runs on a rapidly deteriorating surface with variable bounce, India needed their experienced batters to fire for their fourth success at the iconic ground since 1932 but it was not to be. The loss of Rishabh Pant (9 off 12 balls), K L Rahul (39 off 58) and Washington Sundar (0 off 4) inside the first hour made the chase an improbable task for India. The key for India was the presence of Rahul and Pant in the middle but both departed in a space of 18 balls. They needed to see out Archer's spell but the tearaway pacer struck twice to put England on top. Pant, who injured his left index finger while keeping on day one, clearly looked in discomfort while facing the extreme pace of Archer, wincing in pain every time the ball hurried on to his bat. Pant tried his best to make a difference, collecting a couple of fours via a flick and a one-handed drive off the Barbados-born bowler. Archer, making a Test comeback after more than four years, flaunted his X-factor once again as he produced a beauty to send back a half-fit Pant back into the dressing room. The ball straightened just enough from the angle to shatter Pant's off-stump. Considering the occasion and the high intensity of players from both teams, it was not a surprise to see Archer having a quick word to Pant as the wicket-keeper started his long walk back to the players' balcony via the legendary Long Room. Rahul, at the other end, needed to hold the innings together but when he departed three overs after Pant's dismissal, the writing was on the wall. England captain Ben Stokes bowled his heart out from the Nursery End and got the important wicket of in-form Rahul with a ball that seamed back profusely to trap him lbw. The on-field umpire thought the ball was not hitting the stumps but Stokes got the decision overturned, drawing a loud roar from the crowd, through the DRS. Washington was the next to come in and he lasted only four balls with Archer taking a sharp catch to his right off his own bowling. The grounds have witnessed packed crowds on all days of the three Tests held so far and despite being a Monday morning, a sea of England and Indian fans queued up outside the Lord's hours before play. With the last batting pair of Jadeja Nitish in the centre, India struggled to 95 for seven after the first hour of play, with another 98 runs needed. With pitch playing tricks, Jadeja and Reddy looked to defend rather than counter attacking. Stokes, the warrior that he is, bowled a nine-over spell. Reddy driving Stokes through the cover marked India's first four in 80 balls, summing up their approach. There is an eight-day gap before the start of the fourth Test in Manchester from July 23. England won the series opener in Leeds before India made it 1-1 in Birmingham. The series thus far has been a brilliant promotion of Test cricket with all games stretching to five days.

Why Did Ravindra Jadeja Leave Lord's Test In The Middle Of His Innings On Day 5?

Last Updated: India's Ravindra Jadeja had to take a break during his knock on the final day of the third Test at Lord's. Ravindra Jadeja's battling half-century led India to a score of 163/9, only 29 runs behind England at tea on the final day of a gripping and fluctuating third Test at Lord's on Monday. The Indian all-rounder, though, had to take a bathroom break in the middle. Watch: Nervous work for Ravi Jadeja at Lord's… 😅The Indian all-rounder runs off to use the facilities at the Home of Cricket 🚽 — Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) July 14, 2025 Joining forces with India reeling at 112/8 and England seemingly on course for victory, Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah resisted doggedly for nearly two hours. Jadeja was initially given out lbw to Chris Woakes, but successfully reviewed the decision before hitting the next delivery over mid-wicket for six, one of the few attacking shots attempted during an attritional session. England finally made the breakthrough when Bumrah, on five, skied an attempted pull off Ben Stokes and was caught by substitute fielder Sam Cook. The majority of the crowd erupted with a mixture of joy and relief, but Jadeja continued to frustrate England, reaching his 50 off 150 balls by edging Stokes over the slips for four. He was 56 not out at the interval with Mohammed Siraj on two. England claimed four wickets in the morning to take charge of the match. Rishabh Pant played an extraordinary one-handed straight drive for four off Jofra Archer to move to nine, but the fast bowler responded two balls later with an excellent delivery that uprooted his off stump. Stokes snared KL Rahul lbw for 39, dropping to his knees and imploring the umpire to give him out. The umpire initially refused but England called for a review, and the decision was overturned to huge cheers from the crowd. Washington Sundar was next to fall for a duck, with Archer leaping to his right to take a superb one-handed catch off his own bowling. Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy frustrated England with solid defence in a partnership of 30 until Woakes found the edge of Reddy's bat just before lunch, giving the hosts a huge lift as they left the field to warm applause from a packed crowd. The series is level at 1-1. (With inputs from Agencies) view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. "He's heart of this England team": Irfan lauds Stokes after his magnificent bowling performance in Lord's Test

New Delhi [India], July 14 (ANI): Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan heaped praise on England skipper Ben Stokes following his exceptional bowling performance in the fourth innings of the third Test match which is been played at the 'Home of Cricket', Lord's. So far in the fourth innings, Stokes has bowled 14 overs where he has managed to grab two wickets in his spell where he has conceded just 34 runs at an economy of 2.4. The all-rounder took the wickets of night-watchman Akash Deep (1) and opener KL Rahul (39). Speaking on Stokes bowling performance, Irfan took to X and wrote, 'Ben Stokes bowled an 9.2 over spell on Day 5 of a Test match -- pure grit. He's not just a 4D player, he's the heart of this England team. Giving it everything.' Earlier in the first innings of the Lord's Test, Stokes bowled 20 overs where he snapped two wickets where he gave away 63 runs at an economy of 3.2 picking up the wickets of Karun Nair (40) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (30). Till now in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Stokes has bagged 10 wickets in the three matches of the series so far at an average of 31.00. Coming to the Lord's Test, currently, India is chasing 193 runs and is in a deep spot of bother, having lost eight wickets after scoring 112 runs in 39.3 overs at the stroke of lunch. England won the toss and opted to bat first. England was reduced to 44/2, but a 109-run stand between Ollie Pope (44 in 104 balls, with four boundaries) and Joe Root (104 in 199 balls, with 10 fours) and a counter-attacking 84 run stand for the eighth wicket stand between Brydon Carse (56 in 83 balls, with six fours and a six) and Jamie Smith (51 in 56 balls, with six fours) took England to 387. Jasprit Bumrah (5/74) was the highlight for India with the ball. In the second innings, India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal early, but a 61-run stand between Karun Nair (26 in 46 balls, with five fours) and KL Rahul and a 141-run stand between KL (100 in 177 balls, with 13 fours) and Rishabh Pant (74 in 112 balls, with eight fours and two sixes) took India close to England's score. A brilliant half-century from Ravindra Jadeja (72 in 131 balls, with eight fours and a six) and lower-order contributions from Nitish Kumar Reddy (30) and Washington Sundar (23) took India to 387, with nothing separating the sides. Chris Woakes (3/84) was the top bowler for England in this innings. In England's second innings, India continuously kept England under pressure, except for a 67-run fifth wicket stand between Root (40 in 96 balls, with a four) and Stokes (33 in 96 balls, with three fours). Sundar (4/22) delivered a game-changer spell, running through the middle-order and bundling out England for 192. (ANI)
