Pacers take 2-1 lead in NBA Finals as Tyrese Haliburton nears triple-double against Thunder
Indiana owns a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals series after stealing Game 1 thanks to Tyrese Haliburton's heroic last-second jumper to win it 111-110.
And after a mediocre performance for the Pacers in Game 2, Haliburton turned it up from three-point territory to lead the way for Indiana.
Haliburton finished the game with 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including four made threes. He was also one rebound away from a triple-double after tallying 11 assists. On the defensive end, Haliburton also had two steals and one block.
But this series has proven to be one that requires bench depth to show out, and Pacers guard Benedict Mathurin was up for the challenge.
Mathurin dropped 27 points, leading the Pacers in that category after going a highly efficient 9-of-12 from the field with 7-of-8 made free throws over 22 minutes of work. He also had four rebounds and one assist for his squad.
Pascal Siakam was also in the 20-point club, going 8-of-14 from the field with 5-of-6 made free throws for 21 points with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Meanwhile, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander didn't have his best day shooting by his usual standards, going 9-of-20 from the floor as Indiana continued to play solid defense on him throughout the game. He had 24 points with eight rebounds and four assists, while Jalen Williams led Oklahoma City in the points department with 26 on the night.
Chet Holmgren notched himself a double-double, though he wishes he had more than 20 points after going 6-of-15 shooting. He had 10 rebounds with two assists as well.
The Pacers were able to drop 40 points in the second quarter, but it was the Thunder leading after three quarters, 89-84.
However, Oklahoma City's offense went cold in the fourth quarter as they were outscored 32-18, an unprecedented 12 minutes for this team compared to what they've been able to accomplish all season long.
Both sides had similar stats as a team, but Indiana, once again, turned it up when it mattered most in the fourth quarter.
Indiana hopes to create an even bigger divide in this series in Game 4 on Friday night in their building.

Shohei Ohtani becomes first player in 7 years to post 3 straight 40-homer seasons
With the National League MVP race in full swing, Shohei Ohtani is doing what he usually does this time of year. The Los Angeles Dodgers star clubbed his 40th homer of the year on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays, putting his team up 3-0 in a clash of first-place teams. There aren't many players who can hit a home run like this one, 417 feet to dead center field: It's Ohtani's third straight 40-homer season, making him the first player to accomplish that kind of streak since Khris Davis did it with the Oakland Athletics in 2016-18. It's become a rare feat, with even mashers like Aaron Judge and Kyle Schwarber falling just short. Ohtani is doing this while coming back as a pitcher. He's been slowly ramping up on an MLB mound since June, progressing from single-inning starts to four innings in his most recent appearance. He's been highly effective in that abbreviated action with a 2.37 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 19 innings across eight starts. Even 25 punchouts keeps Ohtani in a class of his own, as Babe Ruth never posted 40 homers as a hitter and 25 strikeouts as a pitcher in a single season, something Ohtani has now down three times. That pitching performance could be what swings a highly competitive MVP race, as Ohtani is facing challenges from Chicago Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, who has been great on both sides of the ball, and Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber, the only NL player with more homers than Ohtani with 41. The Dodgers also got what they wanted to see from starting pitcher Blake Snell in his second start since returning from the injured list (shoulder inflammation). Snell struck out 10 Blue Jays in five shutout innings, allowing only three hits. Both Ohtani and Snell were two of the best players in baseball in the second half of last season. The Dodgers might need a repeat performance from each to stay ahead in a competitive NL West, where the San Diego Padres entered Saturday only three games back for first place.

Son Heung-min helps LAFC salvage a draw in MLS debut vs. Chicago Fire
Less than a week after signing with LAFC, star forward Son Heung-min made his much-awaited debut — and it didn't take him long to make an impact. Son, who signed with the MLS club last week after a decade at Tottenham Hotspur, stepped onto an MLS pitch for the first time in LAFC's match against the Chicago Fire on Saturday. Son subbed into the game in the 61st minute, immediately earning cheers from the crowd at Chicago's SeatGeek Stadium. At the time Son subbed in, the game was at 1-1, with goals from Chicago's Carlos Terán (11th minute) and LA's Ryan Hollingshead (19th). A goal from Fire forward Jonathan Bamba gave Chicago the advantage in the 70th minute. But as the game approached the 80th minute, Son went down in the penalty box off a foul from Terán. Though the referee originally let play continue, the foul was later called to VAR, with the officials ruling for a LAFC penalty kick and a yellow card for Terán. Denis Bouanga, who had subbed in for LAFC at halftime, took the penalty, burying the shot into the back of the net to being LA even with Chicago. In his first minutes in an LAFC uniform, Son quickly made an impact: In addition to drawing the penalty, he had three shots in the draw. Son had a few clear opportunities, but Chicago keeper Chris Brady was able to get the relatively easy saves on those chances. This kind of instant impact is exactly what LAFC was hoping for in the signing, paying out an MLS record $26.5 million transfer fee to bring Son from Tottenham. It only took six days for Son to play his first LAFC minutes after signing with the team, and only one game for him to help lift the team to some points. For Son, it also marked a key opportunity to join the American market — with the Korean forward already receiving a very warm welcome from the L.A. area ahead of his debut. With the draw, LAFC is holding in fifth place in a very busy MLS Western Conference, tied with the Portland Timbers and only one point behind the Seattle Sounders. LAFC also has three games in hand behind the team at the top of the West, San Diego FC, who currently leads with 49 points but has played 26 regular season matches to LA's 23.

Michael Collodi earns second clean sheet in third career start as Dallas beats Timbers 2-0
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Petar Musa and defender Lalas Abubakar scored goals, and Michael Collodi earned his second clean sheet in his third career start as FC Dallas beat the Portland Timbers 2-0 on Saturday night. Musa scored his 12th goal, unassisted in the 8th minute to give Dallas (7-11-7) an early lead. Abubakar used an assist from Sebastian Lletget to score in the 62nd minute for a two-goal advantage. It was the first goal this season for Abubakar and the second assist for Lletget, who subbed in for Patrickson Delgado two minutes earlier. Collodi saved three shots in goal for Dallas. Maxime Crépeau did not have a save for the Timbers (10-8-7). Dallas improves to 3-8-2 at home this season in the first meeting between the clubs. Dallas is 11-1-5 all time at home against the Timbers in a series it leads 12-9-10. Portland, which began the day in fifth place in the Western Conference, has won just twice in its last eight matches in league play. The Timbers will host FC Cincinnati on Saturday.
