Drugs entered state during SAD-BJP govt: Dhaliwal
Ludhiana: Punjab minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal strongly criticised BJP Punjab general secretary Tarun Chugh, holding the saffron party responsible for drug issues of the state.
He addressed mediapersons alongside Tanda MLA Jasvir Singh Raja Gill and Dharamkot MLA Devinderjit Singh Laddi Dhos, among others.
In response to statements from Chugh and BJP spokesperson Vineet Joshi, Dhaliwal said that drug-related issues and gangsterism had increased during the BJP-Akali Dal government. He questioned the BJP's silence when drugs began entering Punjab and challenged its inaction during that period.
The minister pointed out that BJP remained quiet when senior Akali leaders and their coalition partners faced drug smuggling allegations. He questioned Chugh about the party's silence when a prominent Akali leader was imprisoned for smuggling activities.
Dhaliwal criticised Captain Amarinder Singh, now affiliated with BJP, for not fulfilling his 2017 commitment to eliminate drugs in Punjab. He questioned why Amarinder, who is currently in BJP, remained passive on this crucial matter.

Discussing the AAP government's initiatives, Dhaliwal elaborated on the Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign launched on March 1. He reported the arrest of over 14,500 smugglers, registration of 8,600 FIRs, and seizure of 594 kilograms of heroin.
The campaign has gained widespread support across Punjab.
He extended an invitation to Chugh to visit Amritsar and observe the impact of the campaign firsthand, defending its effectiveness and widespread public participation.
Dhaliwal accused BJP of working against Punjab's interests, citing CISF deployment at Nangal Dam and withholding of central funds.
The minister also challenged Congress leaders, particularly Charanjit Singh Channi and asked them to justify their governance. He criticised their failure to take concrete action against drug smugglers. Concluding his address, Dhaliwal emphasised AAP's commitment to Punjab's development, highlighting their achievements in combating drugs and protecting state interests. He expressed confidence in winning the Ludhiana West bypoll and challenged BJP leaders to demonstrate their contributions to Punjab.

US growth likely to slow to 1.6% this year, hobbled by Trump's trade wars, OECD says
U.S. economic growth will slow to 1.6% this year from 2.8% last year as President Donald Trump 's erratic trade wars disrupt global commerce, drive up costs and leave businesses and consumers paralyzed by uncertainty. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development forecast Tuesday that the U.S. economy - the world's largest - will slow further to just 1.5% in 2026. Trump's policies have raised average U.S. tariff rates from around 2.5% when he returned to the White House to 15.4%, highest since 1938, according to the OECD. Tariffs raise costs for consumers and American manufacturers that rely on imported raw materials and components. World economic growth will slow to just 2.9% this year and stay there in 2026, according to the OECD's forecast. It marks a substantial deceleration from growth of 3.3% global growth last year and 3.4% in 2023. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The world economy has proven remarkably resilient in recent years, continuing to expand steadily - though unspectacularly - in the face of global shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But global trade and the economic outlook have been clouded by Trump's sweeping taxes on imports, the unpredictable way he's rolled them out and the threat of retaliation from other countries. Live Events Reversing decades of U.S. policy in favour of freer world trade, Trump has levied 10% taxes - tariffs - on imports from almost every country on earth along with specific duties on steel, aluminium and autos. He's also threatened more import taxes, including a doubling of his tariffs on steel and aluminium to 50%. Without mentioning Trump by name, OECD chief economist Alvaro Pereira wrote in a commentary that accompanied the forecast that "we have seen a significant increase in trade barriers as well as in economic and trade policy uncertainty. This sharp rise in uncertainty has negatively impacted business and consumer confidence and is set to hold back trade and investment.'' Adding to the uncertainty over Trump's trade wars: A federal court in New York last week blocked most of Trump's tariffs, ruling that he'd overstepped his authority in imposing them. Then an appeals court allowed the Trump administration to continue collecting the taxes while appeals worked their way through the U.S. courts. China - the world's second-biggest economy - is forecast to see growth decelerate from 5% last year to 4.7% in 2025 and 4.3% in 2026. Chinese exporters will be hurt by Trump's tariffs, hobbling an economy already weakened by the collapse of the nation's real estate market. Some of the damage will be offset by help from the government: Beijing last month outlined plans to cut interest rates and encourage bank lending as well as allocating more money for factory upgrades and elder care, among other things. The 20 countries that share the euro currency will collectively see economic growth pick up from 0.8% last year to 1% in 2025 and 1.2% next year, the OECD said, helped by interest rate cuts from the European Central Bank. The Paris-based OECD, comprising 38 member countries, works to promote international trade and prosperity and issues periodic reports and analyses.

Out of all cases in 2023-24, registration was the highest for dowry harassment at 837 while cases of sexual harassment at workplaces were at 24, she added.

Canadian wildfires are wrecking havoc in the United States. In Canada, over 200 fires are burning, more than 100 of which are classified as 'out of control', according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. Thick smoke from these wildfires has drifted south into the United States, severely affecting air quality in Minnesota and even reaching as far south as Florida. On June 3, air quality levels in parts of Minnesota reached 'very unhealthy,' with visible haze and smoke reported as far away as Cincinnati, Ohio. In response, 150 U.S. federal firefighting personnel are being deployed to assist with fire suppression efforts in the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Manitoba, the National Interagency Fire Center announced. Meanwhile, ni view of the deteriorating air quality, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has issued a Maroon Air Quality Alert-the highest level on the air quality index, indicating hazardous conditions for everyone. The alert, which has been issued for the first time ever, is in effect from Monday, June 2, through Wednesday, June 4, 2025. The alerts will primarily impact Northwest Minnesota, including areas from Red Lake to Roseau and East Grand Forks. What Does the Maroon Alert Mean?
