Woolworths cancels The Spectator

Spectator30-06-2025
The Spectator has thousands of readers in South Africa, many of whom get their weekly magazine from Woolworths, the country's upmarket retailer. Not any longer. Woolworths has taken the bizarre decision to stop selling The Spectator. The apparent trigger? Gareth Roberts's 'End of the rainbow' cover story.
Does Woolworths really think its shoppers can't cope with encountering such an image on their weekly grocery shop?
The issue featuring that article hit newsstands at the end of May, on the eve of Pride month – just as Woolworths launched its own storewide rainbow campaign. It seems that Roberts's piece, in which he argues that Pride's fall can't come soon enough, prompted a review of Woolworths's decision to stock The Spectator. The retailer appears to have decided that stocking the magazine is incompatible with its Pride campaign – and it has removed The Spectator from its shelves.
Roberts, who is gay, wrote that: '2025 is the year the genderist movement finally started to break apart. It has been a mad, wild ride. I'm sure there's more to come, but after many false alarms it feels like a corner has finally been turned. The collapsing of Pride under the weight of its own internal contradictions is a sure sign that the jig is up.'
The piece was accompanied by an illustration featuring the 'intersex-inclusive Pride flag' – a kaleidoscope of rectangles, triangles and even a circle in thirteen different shades – being painted over. Does Woolworths really think its shoppers can't cope with encountering such an image on their weekly grocery shop? If so, it's quite an assumption about the moral values of its customers.
The Spectator asked Woolworths about its recent decision to delist the magazine. It didn't respond. Whatever the reason for the store's decision, it's a shame that some South African readers weren't offered the chance to pick the issue up and learn how iterations of Pride are collapsing under the weight of their contradictions.
For readers in South Africa, The Spectator is still available in Exclusive Books stores nationwide or you can subscribe from as little as R49

The mysteries of ‘spoof'

'Spook or spoof?' asked my husband, throwing a copy of the paper over to me, and only missing by a foot. When I'd picked it up, I read the headline: 'Fully Chinese-made drone spooking Ukraine air defence.' Then I read the introduction of the report: 'A new Russian decoy drone used to spoof Ukrainian air-defences is made up entirely of Chinese parts.' Well, to spook a person or an animal is to frighten them. It has been in use in America since between the wars and comes from the Dutch for a ghost. Spoof is a more mysterious word. Since the 1970s, to spoof has acquired the meaning 'To render (a radar system, etc) useless by providing it with false information'. Originally the noun spoof in the 1880s meant 'A game of a hoaxing and nonsensical character', or so the OED says. But I think it got things wrong from the first. In 1914 it published its entry for spoof, noting: 'Invented by A. Roberts (b. 1852), comedian.' Arthur Roberts was famous then and nine years later published his autobiography Fifty Years of Spoof. I've just read it and in a way it won't do at all, being full of unconvincing, unhilarious anecdotes. It has, however, a flavour of the late 19th century: champagne, the Prince of Wales, Dan Leno, night houses in the Haymarket, Phil May drinking. But by 1923, Roberts was not claiming to have invented spoof. He says that he was at a racecourse and saw men 'engaged in what seemed to be an entirely new form of confidence trick'. Asking the name of the game, he was told: 'Oh, it's only spoof, Arthur.' He does not explain the game. Our own Michael Heath has depicted the venerable Soho game of spoof, where two players simultaneously reveal how many coins are in their hand after declaring the total number while their fists are still clenched. It may be different from Roberts's racecourse spoof, but if not it predates Roberts's adoption of the term.

Mariah Carey left 'so mad' after suffering wardrobe malfunction 'that nobody saw' at Brighton Pride

Mariah Carey has revealed she was left 'so mad' after suffering a wardrobe malfunction at Brighton Pride last week, she shared on Heart Breakfast on Wednesday. The singer, 56, took to the stage in four figure-hugging outfits as she headlined the stage for an impressive two hours. While it all seemed great on stage from afar, Mariah was left panicking after something went terribly wrong with her outfit. Though she didn't reveal what exactly happened, she told hosts Jamie Theakston and Zoe Hardman that lucky 'nobody saw it'. Mariah said: 'It was a lot of rehearsing and then we had a wardrobe malfunction, which was kind of not cool, and it was right in the front of the area of the front. 'I saved it, nobody saw it, otherwise it would have been talked about, but nobody saw it. And I turned around and walked through the dancers and I was so mad.' Jamie added: 'You were? That doesn't sound like you.' 'Well, I can get mad', Mariah said. Zoe quipped: 'You're allowed to get mad'. Her packed setlist included hits like Vision of Love and Heroes as she gave the long-awaited performance that was initially scheduled for 2020, but was cancelled because of the Covid pandemic. She later wrote on Instagram: 'Thank you so much Brighton Pride for having me tonight! A special heartfelt thank you to the LGBTQ + community for your ongoing support. I will always be there for you. Love, MC.' She took the opportunity to show her support for the trans community by embellishing her pink jacket with the phrase 'Protect the dolls'. Mariah is reportedly paying over £250,000 for her hotel stay during her time in the UK, after arriving on her private jet. The Sun revealed she is staying at one of the top-floor suites at the Corinthia hotel on London's Embankment. Featuring a large terrace, wine cellar, private spa and living room lit with a real fire, the room costs around £20,000 per night. A source told the publication: 'She blocked out two weeks in the best suite. It's only the best for Mariah. Her royal gig is a huge deal, so naturally she is living like a queen.' Daily Mail contacted Mariah's representatives for comment. Mariah is taking to the stage at Sandringham's royal estate as part of the Heritage Live's large outdoor music concerts on August 15. And it seems Mariah is one of the Corinthia's best guests after Beyoncé reportedly 'bowed down' to the singer in June and 'packed up her £25k-a-night London penthouse for the diva songstress to move in.' The Single Ladies singer, 43, had booked a 12-night stay at the Corinthia while performing at London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. But she allegedly moved out at the weekend when self-confessed diva Mariah touched down to play at Capital's Summertime Ball on Sunday. A source told The Sun: 'Superstars as big as Beyonce and Mariah want to stay in only the best hotels. Beyonce had been staying in Corinthia's penthouses. 'But when Mariah flew in, Beyonce packed up so Mariah could take over her suites. It was like Beyonce was bowing down to another music queen.'
