Vietnamese ICE detainee dies in custody, prompting investigation
Tien Xuan Phan had been detained at the Karnes County Immigration Processing Center in South Central Texas since his arrest about seven weeks ago.
Phan was admitted to Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital in Karnes County on Friday and later air-lifted to the Methodist Hospital Northeast in Live Oak, a northeastern suburb of San Antonio, for further evaluation.
The 55-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital Saturday shortly before 6 p.m. The cause of death remains under investigation, authorities said Tuesday. ICE is required to make public all reports regarding an in-custody death within 90 days.
Phan was ordered removed by an immigration judge on April 2, 2012, but 'failed to leave the U.S. as ordered,' according to the agency.
Enforcement and Removal Operations deportation officers arrested Phan on June 2. Officials have not disclosed whether the Vietnamese national had a criminal record.
Phan is at least the ninth immigrant — and the second from Vietnam — to die in ICE custody this year, according to the agency's detainee death reporting database.
Last year, 12 foreign nationals died while in ICE custody.

Man shot, killed inside Lawndale 7-Eleven store
A man died inside of a 7-Eleven store in Lawndale after being shot on Sunday night, authorities said. Deputies with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department responded to reports of a man suffering from gunshot wounds inside the store at about 8:05 p.m. The department said the store was located on the 15800 block of Prairie Avenue. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He's yet to be identified as of Monday morning. Authorities didn't immediately identify a suspect. It's not clear what led up to the shooting. One person was killed in a crash that ignited a car fire in the northbound lanes of I-25 in the Denver metro area on Monday morning. According to the Colorado State Patrol, the crash happened in the northbound lanes of I-25 just south of 84th Avenue about 4:20 a.m. State troopers said the call originally came into the dispatch center as a car fire. When investigators arrived on the scene, they discovered the vehicle had crashed into the side highway wall and then burst into flames on impact. CSP said the crash involved one person in one vehicle. The identity of that person inside the vehicle has not been released.
