Malaysia to continue leading role in regional diplomacy, says PM
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will remain steadfast in the face of global challenges and continue to play its role as the catalyst and leader of regional diplomacy through the Asean 2025 Chairmanship, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said the country is firmly anchored amid challenges such as geopolitical tensions and trade tariffs. "Malaysia is among the earliest countries to act in protecting the interests of industry and businesses and the welfare of the people. "Comprehensive and inclusive strategic measures have been taken, with the involvement of various parties to ensure the country remains economically stable and competitive," he said in his congratulatory speech in conjunction with the official birthday of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, here on Monday (June 2). His Majesty also presented federal awards, medals and honours to recipients at the 2025 Investiture Ceremony held to commemorate the occasion. Also in attendance was Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia. The Prime Minister described the recent 46th Asean Summit as the best in the grouping's history, where Malaysia as the Chairman successfully brought together member nations as well as China and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. "The Asean Summit and the organisation of Lima'25 (Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition) prove that teamwork is the key to our efforts to make the nation's aspirations and ambitions a reality. "The excellence of the Malaysian Armed Forces in Langkawi as well as the greatness of the PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) and the entire government and private machinery in Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur are impressive," said the Prime Minister. He also expressed confidence that Visit Malaysia Year 2026 would be a catalyst for economic growth and to increase job opportunities. In addition, Anwar said increasing agricultural yields and local products, Malaysian-made goods and the resilience of the domestic industry continue to be pillars that strengthen the country's economy. "The people's unwavering support for these initiatives shows high national spirit and awareness of the importance of self-reliance amid the uncertain global situation," he said.

King expresses appreciation for govt, civil servants' role in handling nation's challenges
KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, has expressed appreciation for the government and its civil servants, who have worked hard to manage the country's economy and development. Sultan Ibrahim said the success of the recent 46th Asean Summit was proof of the leadership's ability to strengthen regional and international cooperation. "Although there are those who underestimate Malaysia's capabilities, with hard work and a spirit of cooperation, especially by civil servants, all challenges and obstacles have been successfully overcome," His Majesty said in the Royal Address at the 2025 Investiture Ceremony in conjunction with his official birthday celebration at Istana Negara here on Monday (June 2). Also present was Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia. Present at the ceremony were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and other Cabinet ministers. Sultan Ibrahim also reminded civil servants to provide excellent service and practise the second principle of the Rukun Negara, which is "Loyalty to King and Country". "Loyalty does not mean worship, but honesty and trust in carrying out the duties and responsibilities given, and not betraying the country and the people's trust," said His Majesty. The King stressed that civil servants must be free from the influence of political parties, be neutral and always prioritise the interests of the country and the people. "Government officials must ensure that every decision made is in accordance with the conditions and regulations set, not according to the dictates of politicians. "Every expenditure must also be closely controlled, and cannot be used as desired, by ministers or Members of Parliament, to fish for votes, to the point of causing the government's debt to increase," said the King. Sultan Ibrahim also called on all enforcement agencies to carry out their duties with full integrity so that the people do not lose trust and continue to respect the uniform they wear. – Bernama

The Office of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services said on Sunday that reconstruction of damaged government offices, public residences and transport facilities in the earthquake-affected areas is in progress. "The Tatmadaw (armed forces) extends the temporary ceasefire period from June 1 to 30, 2025 to facilitate rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in earthquake-affected areas. "To hold a free and fair multi-party democracy general election successfully, to serve the interest of the entire nation and people with greater acceleration, to achieve genuine and long-lasting peace and in view of peace and stability,' according to a statement posted on the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services' website. The government plans to hold elections either at the end of this year or in January 2026. There was mounting regional pressure on the Myanmar government to extend the ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid to reach those impacted by the March 28 earthquake. In April, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held talks with military leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and the National Unity Government to pause the conflict on humanitarian grounds. In the just-concluded 46th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur from May 26 to 27, regional leaders also urged for an extended and expanded ceasefire to allow aid delivery without any hindrance and for peace to prevail nationwide. Nearly 3,700 people have lost their lives in the natural disaster and thousands were made homeless when the 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck on March 28. - Bernama
