King expresses appreciation for govt, civil servants' role in handling nation's challenges
KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, has expressed appreciation for the government and its civil servants, who have worked hard to manage the country's economy and development.
Sultan Ibrahim said the success of the recent 46th Asean Summit was proof of the leadership's ability to strengthen regional and international cooperation.
"Although there are those who underestimate Malaysia's capabilities, with hard work and a spirit of cooperation, especially by civil servants, all challenges and obstacles have been successfully overcome," His Majesty said in the Royal Address at the 2025 Investiture Ceremony in conjunction with his official birthday celebration at Istana Negara here on Monday (June 2).
Also present was Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia.
Present at the ceremony were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and other Cabinet ministers.
Sultan Ibrahim also reminded civil servants to provide excellent service and practise the second principle of the Rukun Negara, which is "Loyalty to King and Country".
"Loyalty does not mean worship, but honesty and trust in carrying out the duties and responsibilities given, and not betraying the country and the people's trust," said His Majesty.
The King stressed that civil servants must be free from the influence of political parties, be neutral and always prioritise the interests of the country and the people.
"Government officials must ensure that every decision made is in accordance with the conditions and regulations set, not according to the dictates of politicians.
"Every expenditure must also be closely controlled, and cannot be used as desired, by ministers or Members of Parliament, to fish for votes, to the point of causing the government's debt to increase," said the King.
Sultan Ibrahim also called on all enforcement agencies to carry out their duties with full integrity so that the people do not lose trust and continue to respect the uniform they wear. – Bernama

TOKYO (Bernama-Xinhua): Japan's House of Representatives passed Tuesday a bill to impose a ban on opening and operating online casino websites in the country. The lower chamber of parliament cleared the bill to revise a law on tackling gambling addiction by a majority vote. Indonesia submits key document in bid to join Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development
JAKARTA (Bernama) -- Indonesia has formally submitted its Initial Memorandum to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), one year after the country received its accession roadmap at the 2024 Ministerial Council Meeting (MCM). Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto led the country's delegation to Paris from June 2 to 5 to attend the OECD MCM, the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday. Airlangga, who heads the country's OECD Accession National Team, handed over the document to OECD secretary-general Matthias Cormann on Monday, marking a major milestone in its bid to join the 38-member bloc. "The completion of the Initial Memorandum within one year reflects our strong national commitment to OECD accession,' he said, while acknowledging that the path ahead remains "a long marathon' requiring continued engagement with OECD committees. According to the ministry, the Initial Memorandum outlines Indonesia's self-assessment of its compliance with OECD standards across 32 chapters and 240 legal instruments. Its drafting involved 64 ministries and agencies across 26 sectors and eight cross-sectoral areas, under Presidential Decree No. 17/2024 and Ministerial Decree No. 232/2024, the ministry added. The OECD, founded in 1961 and headquartered in Paris, provides a platform for member countries to develop evidence-based policies, share best practices and address global economic, social, and environmental challenges. - Bernama

China rolls out special Asean visa for 10 South-East Asian countries and also adds Timor Leste in list
SOUTH-EAST ASIA (Bernama): China has rolled out an Asean Visa for the 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and Asean observer Timor-Leste, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The ministry's spokesperson, Lin Jian, said this new programme offers five-year multiple-entry visas to eligible applicants visiting China for business purposes and their spouses as well as children, granting a maximum stay of 180 days. "For anyone with more specific questions on visas to China, they are welcome to contact our diplomatic and consular missions in their countries,' he said in a statement today. He said the initiative was to further facilitate cross-border travels in the region, on top of the visa-free arrangement between China and countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and China's 'Lancang-Mekong visas' programme for Mekong countries. In recent years, he noted that China and Asean have advanced the building of a community with a shared future. "Visits between the people of China and Southeast Asian countries have been frequent. "There is a mutual hope to further ease travel between the two sides,' he pointed out. He also said that the growing 'visa-free list' shows China's firm resolve in expanding high-level opening up. "The various measures China has taken to ease cross-border travel are all part of China's concrete action to create an open global economy,' he explained. Adding to the proof, Lin said in the first quarter of this year, China received over nine million visits by foreigners, up by over 40 per cent year-on-year. "And in the first four months, more than 18,000 foreign-invested companies were established in China, up by 12.1 per cent year-on-year,' he said. He further said that China will continue to improve entry policies and add more countries to the visa-free list. "China is committed to greater openness and deeper cooperation for shared prosperity with the rest of the world,' he added. - Bernama
