Predators add Bruins defenseman Jordan Oesterle, Capitals forward Jakub Vrana off waivers

Yahoo06-03-2025

The Nashville Predators claimed defenseman Jordan Oesterle and forward Jakub Vrana off waivers on Thursday.
Oesterle, 32, is a 6-foot, 180-pound defenseman who played 22 games with the Boston Bruins this season. He scored his first goal of the season against the Predators on Tuesday, but he's seen primarily as a defensive defenseman.
Oesterle has played 393 career NHL games, scoring 20 goals and 72 assists.
Vrana, 28, is a 6-foot, 190-pound winger who has played most of his career with the Washington Capitals. Predators general manager Barry Trotz coached Vrana during his first four seasons in the NHL (2016 - 2019).
Vrana has 117 goals and 103 assists in 393 career NHL games.
The Predators added Oesterle and Vrana one day after trading defenseman Luke Schenn and forward Tommy Novak to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Though they acquired Michael Bunting in the deal, he will be out for some time after undergoing an appendectomy last week.

With these two additions, the Predators have 15 forwards, 10 defensemen, and two goaltenders on the roster. With five players on injured reserve − Roman Josi, Adam Wilsby, Jeremy Lauzon, Michael Bunting, and Zach L'Heureux − the Predators' roster is at 22 players.
The Predators take on the Seattle Kraken at Bridgestone Arena on Thursday (7 p.m. CT, FanDuel Sports Network).

Panthers' Sam Bennett scores 15th goal of playoffs, keeps making Stanley Cup history

Sam Bennett continues to make Stanley Cup playoffs history as his upcoming free agency looms. With his first-period goal in Game 5 against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, the Florida Panthers' center now has 15 goals this postseason. That not only extends his league-leading mark for the playoffs, but it also makes him just the second in NHL history — and first since 1919 — to score 15 goals in a postseason after never recording a 30-goal regular season entering that playoff run. The only other player to do so was Newsy Lalonde, with 17 goals in the 1919 playoffs. But why stop there? Bennett's goal is also his 13th on the road this playoffs, extending his NHL single-postseason record. It's also his sixth consecutive road game with a goal, dating back to Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final against the Carolina Hurricanes. He is just fifth player in NHL history to register a six-game road goal streak in the Stanley Cup playoffs, joining Brian Propp (seven games in 1989), Mark Scheifele (six games in 2018), Kevin Stevens (six games in 1991) and Maurice Richard (six games in 1951). He is also one of just four active players to have scored 15 goals in a single postseason, joining Zach Hyman (16 in 2024), Alex Ovechkin (15 in 2018) and Sidney Crosby (15 in 2009). This story will be updated.

Big Al Ahly crowd, tight security for Club World Cup opener vs. Messi, Inter Miami

A sea of red descended on Hard Rock Stadium Saturday night for the highly anticipated Club World Cup opening match, as fans of Egyptian power Al Ahly traveled long distances to see their beloved Red Devils take on Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates. Although the game was being played 21 miles south of Inter Miami's home stadium, the crowd looked evenly divided. Al Ahly has 12 million Instagram followers and 30 of the 200 credentialed reporters were from Egyptian outlets. Michael and Sherina Zekri, natives of Egypt who moved the United States seven years ago, flew to Miami from Peoria, Arizona, with a group of 11 friends and relatives for the game. They are Messi fans but were rooting for Al Ahly. Other fans wore scarves that were half Inter Miami and half Al Ahly. The Red Devils fans roared when their starting lineup was announced: El Shenawy; Yasser, Dari, Hany; Ben Romdhane, Hamdy, Marawan, Trezeguet, Koka; Wessam. Inter Miami's Starting XI included: goalkeeper Oscar Ustari; center back Toto Aviles, right back Ian Fray, left back Noah Allen, center back Maxi Falcon; midfielder Sergio Busquets, midfielder Telasco Segovia, midfielder Fede Redondo; winger Tadeo Allende; forward Luis Suarez; and Messi, the captain. Jordi Alba, Gonzalo Lujan and Yannick Bright sat out with injuries. Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham, fresh off his knighthood in England, got a loud ovation when he was shown on the jumbo screen. Despite a roster that includes the Argentine eight-time Ballon d' Or winner, Inter Miami is the underdog in Group A, which includes Al Ahly, 30-time Portuguese champion Porto and Palmeiras of Brazil, a perennial regional champion that features Chelsea-bound teen phenom Estavao. The top two teams in each group advance to the Round of 16. Al Ahly is the highest-ranked African team in the world, a team that won that region's Champions League three of the past four years and has racked up 155 trophies over its 118-year history. Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, who was hired last month, makes his Al Ahly debut Saturday. Meanwhile, there is pressure on Messi and Inter Miami to prove that an MLS team can compete with some of the most storied clubs in the world. It will not be easy, as MLS has restrictive roster and salary rules, and Miami is in its infancy, in its sixth season, while Al Ahly was founded in 1907. Security was extremely tight for the match, which was to be expected after the dangerous gate-crashing debacle at the Copa America final between Colombia and Argentina at Hard Rock Stadium last summer. This time, there was a double-ringed perimeter around the stadium grounds. Fans without tickets who arrived at the first checkpoint by foot or car were turned away. Once inside the first ring, fans then had to go through a second security checkpoint at the stadium gates. The game was broadcast on TBS and livestreamed on
