My Chemical Romance's KL concert sold out after four hours, scalpers already seen offering tickets for the desperate
Platforms such as Carousell have since been flooded with listings from individuals attempting to resell tickets at a wide range of prices.
Some listings went as high as RM650 for a single Zone C ticket — originally RM499. A post in Carousell Singapore offered a ticket at Zone — originally RM699 — at S$300 (almost RM1,000).
Standing tickets are also being resold, with prices reaching up to RM970 despite selling for RM599.
Sellers have turned to platforms like X and Facebook as well, with some posts offering negotiable prices. However, several of these posts have been taken down or blocked.
Many Malaysians have voiced frustration over the situation, with one user commenting, 'If you're not really going to watch the performance, why did you even buy the tickets that you don't need?'
Scalping has long plagued Malaysia's concert scene, where, for instance the Coldplay's 2023 concert in Kuala Lumpur, tickets were being resold at two to six times their original value.
This comes as the organisers announced that the concert has been sold out, with 60,000 tickets snapped at around 3pm — around four hours after sales started.
Earlier this week, Malay Mail reported that Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil had confirmed that a dedicated national anti-scalping law is moving closer to reality.
Fahmi disclosed that his deputy, Teo Nie Ching, recently held discussions with stakeholders, including local event ticketing companies and the Association of Live Event Organisers (ALIFE), on proposed measures targeting scalping explicitly for live events held locally.
As Malaysian law does not explicitly ban ticket scalping, legal action against scalpers has been limited. Hence, the resale of tickets above face value is still technically legal.
Some of these measures, Fahmi explained, include ID verification, which would require ticket holders to present the same identification document used at the time of purchase to match the name printed on the ticket.
Apart from Malaysia, MCR will also be performing in Thailand, the Philippines, and Singapore with its last tour stop being in Jakarta.
MCR last performed in Malaysia at Stadium Merdeka in 2007.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 — A love for music and photography drove Mustaffa Ahmad Hidzir to become a freelance concert photographer more than two decades ago. Known as 'Tapa Otai' among local musicians, the 70-year-old former graphic designer chose to work independently and has taken photos at hundreds of concerts, especially rock music performances, without the backing of media companies or official access. 'Taking pictures has always been my hobby… but I'm not an official photographer and I don't have a media pass. So if I want to attend a concert, I have to find my own way in. Sometimes I ask friends, promoters or crew members for help… what's important is building contacts from there,' he told Bernama recently. He said his involvement in photography began by chance in the early 2000s after being diagnosed with high blood pressure and advised by doctors to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Following the advice, Mustaffa began walking around Kuala Lumpur, armed with a digital camera, as a form of exercise, which incidentally rekindled his old passion for photography. After over 20 years of photographing concerts, Mustaffa has compiled a portion of his work into a photography book titled 'Stage 0.1 — Concert Photography', published in collaboration with the National Art Gallery. — Bernama pic 'The first day I took the LRT from Petaling Jaya and got off at Kampung Baru (in Kuala Lumpur), I walked all the way to Bukit Bintang taking photos. That's when I felt the excitement. Then a friend invited me to a concert. I've always loved music, so I tried taking pictures… and it stuck with me,' he said. His interest in music, especially rock, began in his school days when his uncle introduced him to records by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. His love for music deepened after watching the concert documentaries Woodstock (1969) and The Concert for Bangladesh (1971), which revealed behind-the-scenes aspects of the music world and the important role photographers play in capturing stage moments. 'Then, when (American rock band) Santana came to Malaysia (to perform) for the first time in July 1973, I hitched a ride alone to Kuala Lumpur (from Taiping, Perak) just to watch the concert. That moment made me realise there were people who make a living photographing concerts… I also realised that this wasn't just entertainment but an art form,' he said. Mustaffa added that his work experience at record labels such as EMI, Warner Music and BMG gave him an advantage in understanding song structures and the flow of live performances. The 240-page book features nearly 300 black-and-white photos of local rock concerts and was conceptualised by prolific film director Dr U-Wei Haji Saari. — Bernama pic 'Even if your camera is 'glued' to your eye, you may not necessarily capture the (right) moments. You have to understand the tempo of the music, know when the guitar solo is coming, when the stage lights are going to change. If you're not immersed in the music, the photos will feel empty, soulless,' he said. He also pointed out that photography is still often overlooked and underappreciated compared to other art forms. 'For example, in Tokyo, Hong Kong and other major cities, there are dedicated photography galleries. But here, the artistic value of photography is still not seen as being on par with other art forms. That's our challenge,' he said. Akmal jumped on the bandwagon, sharing an interesting anecdote about himself from San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2012. According to the director of 'Didi And Friends The Movie', the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has sponsored him and a few other Malaysian comic artists to attend the event. While at SDCC, the group set up a booth, sold comics, attended panels and networked. However, on one of the days they were there, the group saw a familiar face sitting alone in the lounge area. After Googling the individual on the search engine, the group confirmed that the familiar face was none other than My Chemical Romance co-founder and frontman Gerard Way. As the group greeted him, the singer invited them to sit and chat. Akmal also shared a photo he took with Gerard at the event. Responding to comments, the Malaysian revealed what the group chatted about with the singer. The comic artist explained that Gerard was at SDCC to promote his two comic book series, 'The Umbrella Academy' and 'The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys'. During the same event, the musician also held a signing for 'Killjoys', which he recently released. Gerard also had an excited response when the group revealed that they were from Malaysia, saying that MCR once performed in Kuala Lumpur. Amy Search files counter report denying Shila Amzah's assault claim at KL rehearsal
PETALING JAYA, July 16 — Veteran rocker Amy Search has filed a police report denying claims he attacked singer Shila Amzah during a concert rehearsal at Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur. Berita Harian reported that Shah Alam police chief ACP Iqbal Ibrahim confirmed receiving the report last night, describing it as a 'counter report' rejecting Shila's allegations. 'Yes, a report was lodged, but it was more of a counter report and a denial. The case has been referred to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters,' he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian. Earlier, Harian Metro reported that Amy, whose real name is Suhaimi Abdul Rahman, had given his statement at the Shah Alam police headquarters. The move follows Shila's accusation that Amy had scolded her during the rehearsal last Thursday. Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Datuk Usuf Jan Mohamad previously confirmed that an investigation paper had been opened into Shila's complaint of criminal intimidation. Shila, full name Nurshahila Amir Amzah, alleged on Instagram that she was 'openly attacked' in front of crew members during the session. Several veteran and popular artistes are set to perform at the upcoming concert.
