Efforts on to rescue missing couple from MP: Meghalaya CM
Shillong, May 29 (UNI) Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday said efforts are on to rescue the missing newly-wed couple from Madhya Pradesh who disappeared during their honeymoon in Sohra, also known as Cherrapunjee, a popular tourist destination in Meghalaya.
The Meghalaya police along with State Disaster Response Force and villagers have intensified their search and rescue operation for 27-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam from Indore who have been missing since May 24.
'We are hopeful that we will get positive results and we will be able to find the couple. I am personally monitoring the situation and we are trying our best to find the couple,' Sangma said in a video statement.
Terming the disappearance of the couple as a 'very unfortunate situation', the Chief Minister said that he had spoken to his Madhya Pradesh counterpart Mohan Yadav and he had also received a call from Union Home Minister's office.
'I am personally monitoring the situation on a daily basis. The entire district administration (East Khasi Hills), the state police and the entire village community are on job to find out the couple,' he said.
'The search and rescue team is battling pre-monsoon showers, and the entire belt is known for heavy rainfall. But we are giving our best to ensure that we are able to find the couple,' the Chief Minister said, adding that the government was using latest technology to trace the newlywed.
Police said the couple arrived at Mawlakhiat village from Shillong on a rented Scooty to visit the double-decker root bridge in Nongriat on May 22.
They engaged a local guide and stayed overnight at Shipara Homestay. They checked out the next day at about 6 am and intended to return to Mawlakhiat.
The couple then left their luggage at another homestay, Manha Homestay at a different location (Saitsohpen) as there was no vacancy and went out to look for accommodation elsewhere. But surprisingly they headed back to Nongriat without their luggage.
On May 24, the Sordar of Sohrarim reported an abandoned Scooty. It was traced to the couple via E-challan and an FIR was filed by relatives.
This is the second such incident in Meghalaya since April when a 41-year-old Hungarian tourist, Puskas Zsolt, was found dead near Ramdait village along the trail to Nongrait village , 12 days after he was reported missing .
Police ruled out any foul play in the Zsolt's death and suspected he might have died after a fall.
After that incident, the Meghalaya government issued an advisory for the safety of tourists. They were urged to exercise extreme caution near cliffs, jungles, and water bodies, and hire certified local guides.

Kashmir To Kanyakumari Now A Reality For Rail Network Too: PM Modi
Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. The Chenab Bridge, India's tallest railway bridge, enhances connectivity from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. PM Modi inaugurated it alongside the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, promoting tourism and economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir. Katra: The Chenab bridge has become a new milestone in pan-India connectivity, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarking that the phrase 'Kashmir to Kanyakumari' has now become a reality even in the Indian railway network. "While walking on the Chenab and Anji bridges today, I lived the lofty aspirations of India and the skill and courage of our engineers and workers," the Prime Minister proudly said at a rally in Katra after inaugurating the two bridges. He also inaugurated the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Line and flagged off Vande Bharat services between Katra and Srinagar, which is expected to be a game-changer for tourism. "We have always invoked Maa Bharati with deep reverence, saying 'from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.' Today, this has become a reality even in our railway network," said PM Modi, referring to Jammu and Kashmir as the "crown jewel of India". The Chenab bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, is an engineering marvel built in the face of extreme weather and a challenging topography. At 359 metres, it is taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris by 35 metres. "People visit France to see the Eiffel Tower, and this bridge is taller than that. This bridge will not just help you visit Kashmir, it will become a tourist destination itself," he said. PM Modi said the Chenab and Anji bridges will serve as gateways to prosperity for Jammu and Kashmir. "The Chenab and Anji bridges are a living symbol of India's power on the inaccessible hills of Pir Panjal. This is the roar of India's bright apples will be able to reach the big markets of the country at a low cost and on time," he said. The Prime Minister also called the 272-km USBRL project a symbol of an empowered Jammu and Kashmir and a resounding proclamation of India's growing strength. India won't bow to terrorism, PM Modi reiterated, vowing that his government would not let development stop in Jammu and Kashmir at any cost. "Jammu and Kashmir's development won't stop due to the Pahalgam attack. This is Modi's promise. I won't let development stop. No obstacle can stop the youth from achieving their dreams. Any obstacle must face Narendra Modi first," the prime minister assured the people of the Union territory. Tourism is one of the key means to generate employment opportunities, but Pakistan is trying to destabilise the region, he said, slamming the neighbouring country known for harbouring terrorists. "Our neighbouring country is not only against humanity but also against tourism. It is actively working against the livelihoods of the poor. The Pahalgam attack is a clear example of this. It was an attack on 'insaniyat (humanity) and Kashmiriyat'. It aimed at triggering riots in India. That is why they targeted the tourists," said the Prime Minister. At least 26 civilians, including a local horseman, died in the April 22 terror attack.

Braving harsh weather, forces airlift 17 tourists from north Sikkim
Gangtok, June 6 (UNI) Braving the prevailing adverse weather conditions, the Indian armed forces on Friday safely airlifted 17 stranded tourists from north Sikkim's last village Chaten, to the Pakyong greenfield airport, some 30 km east of Gangtok, official sources said. The MI-02 helicopter successfully carried out the first evacuation of the day, airlifting 17 tourists, both men and children, who were stuck at Chaten since May 29 when massive landslides followed by cloudbursts and torrents cut off the last village, about 130 km north of Pakyong. "The same helicopter has been deployed again to evacuate the remaining stranded persons," a government communique said. "Evacuation operations will continue depending on weather conditions and logistical arrangements," the communique added. On Thursday, two helicopters were pressed into service, while one successfully brought the stranded travellers, the other had to return to Chaten with the tourists on board. To ensure smooth onwards travel to Gangtok, the SNT (Sikkim Nationalised Transport) buses have been stationed at the airport for the evacuees' convenience. A medical team from the health and family welfare department, Pakyong, was at hand at the airport to carry out preliminary health screenings for the arriving evacuees. With the 17 evacuations of the day, the armed forces have airlifted 80 stranded tourists, two of them American citizens, since the aerial rescue operation began on June 3 after foot bridges were washed away, creating piles of rubble and huge boulders. The government officials said around 50 more travellers were stranded and awaiting airlifting. The travellers are from almost all the states of the country, according to the list of stranded tourists. UNI PC ARN PRS
