NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch was close with NYC mass shooting victim Wesley LePatner: ‘My beautiful friend'

New York Post30-07-2025
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch was friends with Blackstone exec Wesley LePatner, one of four people gunned down in Monday's horrific mass shooting on Park Avenue — calling the 43-year-old mom 'my beautiful friend' during a moving vigil for the victims.
The two were linked through the UJA-Federation of New York, where LePatner and the top cop's mom, Merryl Tisch, both served on the Jewish philanthropic group's board of directors.
Jessica Tisch acknowledged the heartbreaking connection at a Tuesday night vigil at Bryant Park for the four victims — LePatner, security guard Aland Etienne, Rudin Management associate Julia Hyman and NYPD cop Didarul Islam, a married father of two.

Flanked by Mayor Eric Adams and other officials, Tisch cited a Jewish blessing urging loved ones to focus on the good that the victims brought to those around them.
'The people who knew them best are already carrying that blessing,' she said. 'That kind of love doesn't disappear. That kind of service doesn't end.

'Aland, Julia, my beautiful friend Wesley, and Police Officer Didarul Islam, they were taken from our arms in violence,' she said. 'They now rest in God's arms in peace. May their memories be a blessing.'
In a statement Tuesday night, UJA paid homage to LePatner, a managing partner at Blackstone.

'Wesley was extraordinary in every way — personally, professionally, and philanthropically,' the statement said. 'An exceptional leader in the financial world, she brought thoughtfulness, vision, and compassion to everything she did.
'In 2023, we honored her with the Alan C. Greenberg Young Leadership Award at our Wall Street Dinner, recognizing her commitment to our community and her remarkable achievements, all the more notable as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field,' the group said.
LePatner also led a UJA mission to Israel following the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas terror attack.

Tamura, a deranged Las Vegas casino security guard with a grudge against the NFL over perceived CTE issues, stormed into the building around 6:30 p.m. and opened fire — first in the lobby and later on the 33rd floor, in Rudin's offices, before taking his own life with an AR-15-style assault rifle.
LePatner was among those gunned down in the lobby.
'She was a shining star,' her driver, Craig Inducci, told The Post Wednesday. 'I had never met a person like her. She was beautiful, she was brilliant, she was kind and generous. She was the total package.
'It's just terrible, terrible,' the 67-year-old Tampa native said. 'My God, she was a little thing too! Little, petite — but a dynamo.'

US Muslim charity which takes in over $26m a year should be investigated over Hamas ties: senator Tom Cotton

The largest Muslim charity in the US should be investigated by the IRS over alleged ties to terrorist organizations and potentially stripped of its tax exempt status, according to one US senator. The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) took in more than $26 million between two of its richest chapters in Washington DC and California in 2023, according to its most recent federal tax filings, but there are significant concerns about where that money goes. 'CAIR purports to be a civil rights organization dedicated to protecting the rights of American Muslims,' claimed Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) in an August 4 letter to IRS Commissioner Billy Long. 'But substantial evidence confirms CAIR has deep ties to terrorist organizations.' 5 Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton has called on the IRS to investigate CAIR's alleged links to terrorists groups, including Hamas. Cotton told The Post Wednesday 'CAIR's deep ties to terrorist groups…should prevent them from maintaining nonprofit status. The status is a privilege not a right.' In November 2023, weeks after the Oct.7 Hamas attacks on Israel, CAIR co-founder and national director Nihad Awad said that he was 'happy to see' Palestinians 'breaking the siege and throwing down the shackles of their own land' during the terrorist attack that left 1,200 Jewish people dead. He later said his statement had been taken out of context. 5 Senator Cotton's letter cites CAIR co-founder Nihad Awad, who stated that he was 'happy to see' Palestinians 'breaking the siege and throwing down the shackles of their own land' during the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel. Getty Images CAIR denied the claims, saying: 'Tom Cotton's baseless demand that the IRS target a nonprofit organization based on debunked conspiracy theories is an un-American political stunt,' in a statement to The Post. 'The truth is that CAIR is an independent American civil rights organization.' 5 Senator Tom Cotton has written a letter to IRS Commissioner Billy Long (pictured) to investigate CAIR's alleged ties to terrorist groups. Getty Images The charity was founded in Washington DC in 1993 and was linked to Hamas in 2008 when US authorities successfully prosecuted five leaders at the Holy Land Foundation For Relief and Development, a now-defunct Texas-based nonprofit, for giving more than $12 million donated in the US to the terror group. The lawsuit was the largest terrorism-financing case in US history. Cotton referenced the same lawsuit in his letter. He noted CAIR was listed in federal court papers as a member of the Muslim Brotherhood's Palestine Committee, and that the trial revealed CAIR's founders had participated in a meeting of Hamas supporters in Philadelphia, 'where they discussed the Islamist agenda in America while concealing their true affiliations,' the letter claimed. 5 People participating in a protest sponsored by CAIR against President Donald Trump's new travel ban in June 2025. WILL OLIVER/EPA/Shutterstock In addition, The Post revealed in March a significant amount of cash pledged to the group has allegedly gone missing, according to a watchdog group who sent a complaint to the Department of Justice in March. According to the Intelligent Advocacy Network (IAN), a California-based, non-partisan advocacy group, the money was given to a CAIR chapter in Los Angeles to help re-settle impoverished immigrants in California between 2022 and 2024. In what appears to be a sleight of hand, the money – $7,217,968 — was sent to CAIR-Greater Los Angeles and not to CAIR-CA, which was the only group eligible to receive it, according to the complaint. In his letter to the IRS, Cotton also said he wants the agency to probe whether the charity is fulfilling its charitable purpose. Nonprofits do not pay tax on the donations and grants that they receive, under code 501(c)(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code. 'The IRS has broad authority to examine whether an entity's operations align with its exempt purpose,' said Cotton. 'Tax-exempt status … should not subsidize organizations with links to terrorism.'

Education Department Investigates Alleged Anti-Semitic Harassment in Baltimore City Public Schools

The U.S. Department of Education has launched an investigation into a civil rights complaint filed against Baltimore City Public Schools, where Jewish students have allegedly been subjected to 'persistent discrimination and harassment.' The Department's Office for Civil Rights said on Thursday it is looking into whether the district, which serves more than 76,000 students across 177 schools, is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the federal law prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in educational settings.

30-year-old from North Carolina dies after going under in alpine lake, WA cops say

A 30-year-old man from Raleigh, North Carolina, died after going underwater in a cold alpine lake in Washington, deputies said. Someone sent a 911 text at about 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, from Colchuck Lake, the Chelan County Sheriff's Office said in an Aug. 6 Facebook post. The man, who has not been identified by authorities, hiked to the icy vibrant blue lake from Colchuck Trail with three friends, spokesperson Jason Reinfeld told McClatchy News in an Aug. 7 email. Reinfeld said the group then got in the water to swim. They were swimming 'across a small inlet' on the west side of the lake when the man couldn't swim further, Reinfeld said. The man was about 20 yards from the shore when he went underwater for about five minutes, Reinfeld said. Another hiker pulled the victim out of the water. The hiker and the man's friends took turns performing CPR until first responders got to the scene, Reinfeld said. Because of the remote mountain area, the man was hoisted into an Army helicopter at about 8:45 p.m., deputies said in the news release. He was transported to the Leavenworth Fish Hatchery where he was pronounced dead, deputies said. Colchuck Lake is about a 15-mile drive southwest from Leavenworth, a Bavarian-style village and tourist destination. The lake is icy and deep blue, making it a popular hiking area, according to the Washington Trails Association.
