A man opens fire on German police near the Czech border and is shot dead

BERLIN — A man was fatally shot near Germany's border with the Czech Republic after a federal police patrol stopped his car for a check and he fired at officers, police said Sunday.
The shooting occurred on a road between Schirnding and Münchenreuth, just inside Germany, on Saturday afternoon.
Bavarian police said the driver left his car and fired at the officers, who returned fire and fatally wounded him. He died at the scene.
The driver, who was alone in the car, was identified as a 47-year-old Iranian who had lived in the Mannheim area of southwestern Germany for several years.
Police believe he was returning from a trip to the Czech Republic to buy drugs, as he was carrying a 'low three-digit gram' quantity of crystal meth, according to a Bavarian police statement.

North Bay police say a man has been arrested and charged following an eight-month investigation into human trafficking. Police say the accused — a North Bay businessman — was taken into custody without incident on May 28. In a Monday news release North Bay police said they launched an investigation in October after receiving reports involving unpaid wages, the sale of immigration documents, and coercion of foreign nationals into paying for being added to the payroll. "The investigation revealed that a North Bay employer exploited a foreign national by requiring payment for documents essential to their immigration application," police said in the release. According to police, on May 28, officers — with the support of the Provincial Human Trafficking Intelligence-led Joint Forces Strategy (IJFS) and the Ministry of Labour — executed search warrants at three business locations within the City of North Bay. The accused was taken into custody and slapped with multiple charges including human trafficking, material benefit from human trafficking, laundering proceeds of crime, and fraud over $5,000, police say. Police say the accused was released on house arrest on Monday and the courts have issued a publication ban, which prohibits the publication, broadcast, or transmission of specific information related to the case.

He previously spent 17 years living in Kuwait. Article content Shameka Pruiett knew Soliman and his wife as kindly neighbours with three young kids and two teenagers who'd play with Pruiett's kids. Article content Another neighbour, Kierra Johnson, said she could often hear shouting at night from his apartment and once called police because of the screaming and yelling. Article content On Sunday, Pruiett saw law enforcement vehicles waiting on the street throughout the day until the evening, when they spoke through a megaphone telling anyone in Soliman's home to come out.
