Top 5 pass rushers in the Big Ten for 2025 season
The college football season is right around the corner, and it is going to be an exciting one in the Big Ten. The conference is loaded with good teams, and there are high expectations after back-to-back national championships. Michigan won it all in 2023, and Ohio State captured the crown last season. There should be a good amount of teams that are still alive and contending for a national championship at the end of the 2025 season, and it will be exciting to see if another team from this conference can pull it off.
In terms of contenders in the Big Ten, Ohio State, Penn State and Oregon are the teams that you can essentially write in to make the College Football Playoff. All three teams made it last year, and they are all expected to be among the best teams in the country this year as well. Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and USC are all teams to watch, too. The Hoosiers and Wolverines both have CFP experience, and they are hoping to make it again. USC and Illinois are looking for their first appearance.
Every year, the Big Ten has some of the best defenses in the country, and that will be no different this season. Defense wins championships, and teams in this conference take that mantra seriously. There are a lot of important positions on that side of the football, but it all starts with getting pressure on the quarterback. Here are the top-five pass rushers in the Big Ten ahead of the 2025 season:
5. TJ Guy, Michigan
The Michigan football team had one of the best defenses in the country last season, and the Wolverines are expected to have an elite unit once again this season. The pressure that Michigan was able to get on the QB last year is a big reason why the defense had so much success. The team did lose some elite defensive linemen to the NFL like Mason Graham and Josiah Stewart, but the Wolverines are still in good hands this year, and one guy who will have a huge role defensively is TJ Guy.
Last season was Guy's first year having a big role on this Michigan football team, and he didn't disappoint. He finished the season with 32 total tackles and 5.5 sacks. This season, he is going to be on the field even more. All of his coaches and teammates have been raving about him during the offseason, and it looks like a big year is coming.
4. Gabe Jacas, Illinois
Watch out for the Illinois football team next season. In every Big Ten position group ranking ahead of the 2025 season, you are going to see the Fighting Illini near the top. Not a lot of people are talking about this team because it isn't traditionally a football power, but Bret Bielema has this team in a great spot ahead of the 2025 season. Remember, Illinois won 10 games last season, and they are expected to be even better this year. The Coaches Poll was released yesterday, and the Fighting Illini are ranked #12. This team is good, and Gabe Jacas is one of the best players.
Gabe Jacas had a massive year in 2024 as he finished the season with 74 total tackles, eight sacks and three forced fumbles. He is a remarkable force for this Illinois team, and he is going to have a major impact on this defense. His ability to get to the QB makes everyone's job easier.
3. Dani Dennis-Sutton, Penn State
Dani Dennis-Sutton is going to be one of the most exciting players to watch in the Big Ten this season, and the Penn State football team is going to be one of the best teams in the country. The Nittany Lions are ranked No. 3 in the preseason Coaches Poll, and guys like Dennis-Sutton are why. Penn State had a lot of talent that could've went to the NFL after last season, but a lot of them came back to chase a national title. Dennis-Sutton is one of them. He is one of the top pass rushers in the Big Ten and the country.
Last season was an impressive one for Dani Dennis-Sutton. He ended up racking up 42 total tackles, 8.5 sacks, three passes defended, two forced fumbles and one interception. He can truly do it all, and it's going to be exciting to see what kind of strides he took during this offseason. He is going to be a nightmare for opposing offenses.
2. Derrick Moore, Michigan
The Michigan football team is going to have a terrific pass rusher duo this season as Derrick Moore is also back and ready to wreak havoc in opposing backfields. Moore and Guy might not have flashier stats than some of these other guys on the list, but they also had to share the field with some of the best defensive players in the entire country last year. This year, the show is going to be theirs, and they both showed in Michigan's bowl game against Alabama that they are ready.
Michigan ended the 2024 season with a win against Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl, and their NFL players did not participate in that one. The defense didn't miss a beat, and that is why people are so optimistic about the 2025 season. The Wolverines are going to be good on defense, so the offense will remain the question.

The best pass rusher in the Big Ten ahead of the 2025 season is Matayo Uiagalelei, who plays for the Oregon football team. Yankees Mailbag: The stretch run and Tucker's free agency
Good afternoon everyone, it's time to dive back into the mailbag and answer some of your questions. Remember to send in your questions for our weekly call by e-mail to pinstripealleyblog [at] gmail [dot] com. ReadingYankee asks: I, for one am shocked by the Blue Jays current run of success. I did NOT see them even having a winning record this season. Based on the remaining schedule, can you give us an idea of the Yankees path to clinch a playoff spot, whether it is the unlikely path of clawing back the division, or sneaking in as the (current position) third Wild Card. And who would be most likely to falter in front of them to open up that path? I've been shocked by their ascension as well — if there was a team I thought would challenge the Yankees this year it was the revamped Red Sox, but the Jays being above both of them has been a surprise. The Yankees have blown through every metric that could've pointed them towards a rebound, and look every bit the part of a team destined for a first-round exit at best. Their hold on the final Wild Card spot is narrow, sitting just a half-game above the Guardians entering today, and they're staring at a 6.5 game deficit in the division. The difference between the first and third Wild Card is a negligible 2.5 games, so if they ever decide to finally pull out of the tailspin they've been on for months now they could easily get into more comfortable positioning, but that requires them flipping the switch in a major way from how they've been playing. A series win against the Twins is a decent start considering where they've been, but they need a lot more consistency before we can count that as anything other than clearing the lowest bar imaginable. The rest of their August is actually very favorable for them — matchups against St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Washington, and the White Sox could all boost them back into the black for this month, and a crucial matchup against the Red Sox lies sandwiched between them. They need to hit their stride here, because the first half of September will make or break them — they face a gauntlet run against the Astros, Blue Jays, Tigers, and Red Sox back-to-back-to-back-t0-back. If they're in decent shape for that stretch than anything's possible, but if they continue to float down before they even get there I'd say they're more likely to miss the dance outright than not. jmack175 asks: I'm a big fan of the '08 offseason strategy that brought in CC/Tex/Burnett as opposed to the lower tier more budget approach signed to longer contracts to bring the AAV down… having said that, I am clamoring for Tucker next year, but hear a lot of fans saying that we should resign Grisham instead to a five-year deal for $17 million per year or so. This seems like the type of mediocrity move that Cashman would pull — a guy has a career year who has never had one before and Cash overpays him for the next 6 year or 7 years (see LeMahieu, DJ, and Hicks, Aaron). It's a bit of wishful thinking to plan for an '08-09 offseason-saving free agency class to come around again — the Yankees had everything they needed fall into place then and had no reservations about dropping the money necessary to get it, which are two circumstances that rarely come up anymore let alone together. To compare situations, New York would need to pull off a Tucker/Bregman/Framber Valdez or Dylan Cease type of haul to land a similar remodeling, and aside from the fact that landing even one of those names would be big news these days there's just no way that Hal Steinbrenner and company will go that far. Tucker is the jewel of the class though, and the Yankees have interest just like most of the league does, so let's focus in on him and the current Yankee outfield. The Yankees obviously have Aaron Judge penciled in for right field in 2026 and beyond, and currently deploy a trio of Jasson Domínguez, Cody Bellinger, and Trent Grisham for the remaining two spots. Domínguez is a mainstay assuming that the team doesn't involve him in offseason trade talks, which they've been adamant about avoiding up until this point, which leaves Bellinger and Grisham left for us to discuss when we break down how the outfield could evolve. Bellinger has been one of the team's best bats this year, looking closer to the All-Star caliber player he once was with the Dodgers even if he doesn't have his 2019 MVP form anymore. He'd be great to keep around, and his versatility with first base means that they could shift him there next year with Paul Goldschmidt's contract expiring should Bellinger opt-in to his 2026 player option or re-sign with the team. Grisham meanwhile, has been enjoying a career year unlocked with more regular playing time covering every spot in the outfield grass whenever Aaron Boone wants to play him in a particular matchup or give his starters a rest day. He's been incredibly valuable to the team and deserving of a raise from the $5 million he's earning in his final arbitration year, but the question becomes how much will he earn and with who. If he's getting a deal around $17 million per year as suggested, much as I've liked him in pinstripes I don't think the Yankees should lock him down for that, especially not while Tucker is still on the market. If they lose out and pay him as a Plan B, I could at least see the reasoning there, but if he doesn't get too much traction I'd love to see a world where the Yankees swing for both: get Tucker as your offseason capstone, and keep Grisham around as the super outfielder providing depth and keeping the starters well-rested. It's highly unlikely that they want to spend the money for both, but there's plenty of reason to believe it would work if they did.

Misiorowski's return highlights bevy of roster moves
The Brewers have made several roster moves ahead of tonight's game with the Cincinnati Reds: The most notable item is the return of Jacob Misiorowski. For those who read the tea leaves, this wasn't a major surprise: it was known that he'd pitch somewhere today, and when reports surfaced that he traveled to Cincinnati with the team and they still hadn't named a starter, it looked increasingly likely that Miz would be the guy. According to Adam McCalvy, tonight's start will be a short one (and DL Hall looks like the likely piggybacker). To make room for Misiorowski, it's Grant Anderson who has been optioned to Triple-A Nashville—not Tobias Myers, who would've been the guess of some. The rest of the moves revolve around two temporary absences: Isaac Collins, who has been placed on the paternity list (congrats, Isaac) and Blake Perkins, who was been placed on the bereavement list (condolences, Blake). In their place the Brewers brought up Tyler Black and newcomer Steward Berroa from Triple-A Nashville. Black and Berroa are the only two players who were on Nashville's roster who both can play the outfield and were already on the 40-man roster (so no move is necessary there), so it makes sense that the two of them would get the call. Expect to see a lot of Brandon Lockridge this weekend, too, and probably some Christian Yelich in left field.
