GERD dispute can be resolved quickly: Trump - Foreign Affairs

Al-Ahram Weekly14-07-2025
US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence in a rapid resolution to the long-standing dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
'I think if I am Egypt, I want to have water in the Nile, and we are working on that,' Trump said during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the White House. He described the dam as 'closing up water going to the Nile,' which Egypt depends on for 97 percent of its water.
Trump added, 'I think the United States funded the dam. I do not know why they didn't solve the problem before they built the dam. But it is nice when the Nile River has water.'
Calling the Nile 'a very important source of income and life,' Trump said, 'to take that away is pretty incredible. But we think we are going to have that solved very quickly.'
Construction of the GERD began in 2011, sparking tensions between upstream Ethiopia and downstream Egypt and Sudan, both of which have demanded a legally binding agreement governing the dam's filling and operation.
Ethiopia has filled the dam in five stages between 2020 and 2024 and plans to inaugurate it in September, according to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Cairo and Khartoum, while not opposed to Ethiopia's development aims, have repeatedly criticized Addis Ababa's unilateral actions.
Negotiations over the dam have stretched on for more than a decade without yielding an agreement. Egypt announced the collapse of the GERD talks in December 2023, citing Ethiopia's rejection of proposed technical and legal frameworks.
Sudan, which shares Egypt's concerns, has warned that Ethiopia's moves could affect the safety of its dams.

Trump Suggests Fed Chair Powell May Be Open to Interest Rate Cut

Taarek Refaat Former U.S. President Donald Trump signaled Friday that Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell might be open to lowering interest rates, following what Trump described as a "very good" meeting between the two men. The meeting, which took place Thursday during a rare visit by Trump to the Federal Reserve's Washington headquarters, focused on the ongoing renovation of two main buildings, an initiative that has drawn criticism from Trump and the White House over its high cost. The Fed, for its part, acknowledged the visit and expressed appreciation for Trump's support in completing the renovation project. Speaking to reporters Friday, Trump highlighted the discussion as 'very positive,' particularly in relation to monetary policy. 'We had a very good meeting… I think we had a very good discussion about interest rates,' Trump told reporters. While Powell has maintained a cautious stance, emphasizing the need to wait for more economic data before adjusting rates, Trump has continued to press publicly for immediate cuts. According to Reuters, Trump used the opportunity to renew his call for the Federal Reserve to reduce rates in order to stimulate growth. The Federal Reserve is widely expected to hold its benchmark interest rate steady at 4.25% to 4.50% following its upcoming two-day policy meeting. Powell has consistently indicated that the Fed will remain data-dependent, particularly amid mixed signals from the U.S. economy. The central bank issued a statement Friday thanking Trump for his encouragement regarding the facility upgrades, saying it "looks forward to the project's completion." This encounter marked one of the few direct interactions between Trump and Powell since Trump left office, and it comes at a time of increased political scrutiny over the Fed's role in managing inflation and supporting growth as the U.S. heads into an election year. While Powell's public comments suggest no immediate rate cuts are planned, Trump's remarks have fueled speculation that political pressure on the central bank could intensify in the coming months. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

China Reaffirms Support for Two-State Solution as Only Path to Mideast Peace

Ahmed Emam China's Foreign Ministry reaffirmed on Thursday that the two-state solution remains the only viable path to achieving lasting peace in the Middle East, particularly amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. In a statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry underscored its commitment to promoting international pressure to secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The ministry emphasized that peace and stability can only be restored through diplomatic efforts and mutual recognition between Israelis and Palestinians. "China will continue to support efforts to halt the fighting in Gaza," the statement said, calling on the international community to uphold justice and encourage negotiations toward a peaceful resolution. In a broader diplomatic message, Beijing also renewed its call for a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine through dialogue and diplomacy, urging all parties involved to prioritize negotiations over military confrontation. China has consistently advocated for political solutions to global conflicts and positioned itself as a proponent of multilateral diplomacy in both the Middle East and Eastern Europe. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks
