Dömötör: Tisza Party cannot deny support for Ukraine

Budapest Times22-04-2025

Csaba Dömötör warned that Ukraine's possible membership, being "an issue involving thousands of billions of forints", could fundamentally impact the opportunities of the European and Hungarian economy.
'The Tisza Party cannot deny the importance of Ukraine's European Union entry … in Brussels, Tisza MEPs have supported a resolution on the European Union's budget that includes passages with regard to Ukraine,' Csaba Dömötör, MEP of ruling Fidesz, said.
Dömötör told a press conference in Budapest on Wednesday that through adopting the resolution, Tisza's MEPs 'voted full and unconditional support for Ukraine … and voted for the EU to spend even more money on Ukraine and that Ukraine should proceed towards EU membership'. He said that, according to statements by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Ukraine could be granted a fast-track procedure to become a member with full rights even before 2030.
He accused Tisza of trying to downplay the importance of the issue.

Over 1.6 million votes submitted in Voks 2025 on Ukraine's accession to EU

Balázs Hidvéghi, State Secretary of the Prime Minister's Cabinet Office, said on Friday that the number of votes submitted in the Voks 2025 referendum on Ukraine's accession to the European Union has exceeded 1.6 million. Hidvéghi said on Facebook that 'the intention to vote is steeply increasing, but the pressure on our country to give in concerning Ukraine is also growing'. 'Neither Brussels, nor Kyiv, nor their servants here want Hungarians to be able to freely decide in the matter,' he added. 'We still insist on having the right to decide, and nobody can take away that right from us,' Hidvéghi said. He said the referendum would continue until June 20 and encouraged everyone to cast their vote.

Hankó: Brussels wants to erase our Judeo-Christian culture

Balázs Hankó, the minister for culture and innovation, said Brussels 'wants to erase Europe's roots, our Judeo-Christian culture'. In a speech at the CPAC Hungary 2025 conference in Budapest on Friday, the minister said Hungarian culture provides a national identity that transcends borders, and higher and vocational education guarantee knowledge, work and 'a mission in service of our communities'. He added that science and innovation were 'what determines our sovereignty', and families were the future. 'It is these cornerstones of our Christian national identity that Brussels is attacking and wants to distort,' Minister Hankó said, adding that Brussels wanted to 'make the discriminatory world of abnormality dominant over normality and order'. Minister Hankó said this was the explanation for Brussels's exclusion of university students and researchers who pushed back against its influence from international cooperation programs, and this was why Hungary was being punished for banning 'gender propaganda' from schools. Minister Hankó said those who were fighting for their nation and justice would never waver, adding that 'this is how we patriots are.'

Gulyás: Hungary has always represented peace

Gergely Gulyás, Head of the Prime Minister's Office, said Hungary is currently the representative of normality in Europe. Gergely Gulyás, Head of the Prime Minister's Office, said Hungary has always represented peace, and 'we stood in support of peace during the Russia-Ukraine war even when European liberals and members of the US Democratic Party clearly stood in support of war'. Gulyás told CPAC Hungary that Hungary was currently the representative of normality in Europe. 'Actually, we are the centre, but in the Western world, they have been trying to push the centre, common sense, to the sidelines for several decades. It also required a betrayal by the Western European right, too,' he said. 'Change is needed, and there is currently a chance for it,' he said. 'The joining of forces that has developed thanks to CPAC since the foundation of the Patriots party alliance between conservative right-wing European parties and the US gives us a chance to return traditional European values to the focus of politics, also in Western government policies.'
