The OZEN Collection opened Reserve Bolifushi in 2020, after the success of its first property, OZEN Life Maadhoo. But if Maadhoo is the indulgent kaftan, Bolifushi is the sparkling tuxedo.
Plonked in a cerulean lagoon in South Malé Atoll, this private resort pushes the boundaries of luxury. It's buzzy and built-up, oozing sultry glamour and is dazzlingly lit up at night. You're still on a lush tropical resort, surrounded by the pristine beaches and turquoise waters you'd expect – but the vibe is less off-grid escape than happening destination: a place to see and be seen.
This hotel was named the world's best all-inclusive in the 2023 Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Awards, and second in the overall 'Best of the Best Hotels' category. The rankings were compiled using data from more than 1.5 million reviews of the most upmarket hotels imaginable – and the award is wholeheartedly deserved.
The OZEN Collection has its own private lounge at Malé's Velana International Airport, so the luxury begins the moment you're through passport control. The resort is only a 25-minute catamaran from the island, where you're greeted with your own private butler, or hiyani. But in no way is it stuffy: this is a surprisingly family-friendly resort with one of the Maldives' biggest kids' clubs and, believe it or not, its first ice-skating rink.
In no way could the accommodation be described as "rooms": these are luxury apartments. They divide into 'Earth' villas on the beachfront, and overwater 'Ocean Pool' suites on stilts, just a walk (or jump) down into the lagoon. They vary between one and two bedrooms but all boast private pools.
The smallest villa is a two-storey, 88 square-metre behemoth with a huge L-shaped pool and a thatched gazebo to bask in the shade. The dark timber interiors are brightened with floor-to-ceiling windows and pale upholstery, and furnished with all the mod-cons you could imagine.
The villas go all the way up to the elite of the elite: the Reserve versions of both 'Earth' and 'Ocean Pool' villas. The overwater ones have slides, down which you can catapult into the Indian Ocean. There's even one 'Royal' Reserve, with a main villa and two guest versions. It has a spa pavilion, gym, six-person Jacuzzi, overwater bar, its own restaurant and a fully stocked kitchen with a wine cellar. To put it bluntly: the accommodation is ludicrous.
There are seven – yes, seven – restaurants and bars, including three specialty restaurants, all served by a chef's garden and the Maldives' first indoor hydroponic farm over on neighbouring Maadhoo.
Vista del Mar is the all-day dining option that offers "world cuisine" (translation: just about anything you could imagine) from Spain, Italy, Mexico, Japan, the US and even Russia. SOYI is the ubiquitous pan-Asian – but with a fun, child-friendly twist, like the sweet'n'sour pork ribs or the shokupan honey toast dessert.
Saffron, the traditional Indian restaurant, offers guests a Thali experience: a selection of multiple (mostly plant-based) dishes on a platter, like charred sweet potato chat, sprouted lentil curry and crispy-fried okra. Each meal begins with a rose-water hand ritual and a tamarind-infused gin martini. Sangu offers Moroccan and Levant mezze or tagines, and a sensuous beach bar where you can bury your feet in the sand to watch the belly dancers. Ozar, the bar next to the main pool, is where you dangle your feet over the water to watch the sunset, enjoying a shisha pipe and the live DJ.
But Origine is the standout specialty restaurant. It offers modern European elegance – extraordinarily fresh – via a meat, seafood or vegetarian set menu with wine pairings. It could win awards in any major city.
It shouldn't surprise you to learn that Bolifushi has a world-class spa, where you can organise a traditional Ayurvedic wellness consultation. The practitioner looks at you and feels your pulse to assess the balance of the three doshas (humours) in your body, vada, kapha and pitta, and what imbalance of each might be responsible for any skin, digestion or inflammation issues. Best not to try after a night of indulgence.
There's all the customary stuff like windsurfing, canoeing and paddleboarding, surpassed by the option to charter a private yacht. Bolifushi is also one of the only islands in the Maldives that's fully surrounded by coral reef, so you can snorkel to your heart's content if you don't fancy scuba diving around nearby shipwreck sites. You can explore the island by bike, charmingly decorated with your name on the number plate.
The in-villa "floating breakfast" is a wonderful idea. But in practice, tackling cooked eggs and coffee from a tray determined to drift away is trickier than it sounds. My butler is probably still fishing croissant crumbs out of the pool.
But there's one experience that stands out. Before the sun sets, guests gather on the wooden jetty, cocktail in hand. As if an alarm clock sounds in the water, enormous stingrays swoop out of nowhere and steam towards the shallows, begging to be fed. The hotel staff dole out handfuls of sashimi to the puppy-like rays, while reef sharks and jack fish dart here and there for bloody scraps. It's mesmerising, oddly moving and utterly unique.
Bolifushi is perhaps more suited to families and glamorous young professionals than it is to digital detoxxers after a deserted-island escape. But if there is a better all-inclusive hotel in the world, I can't imagine it.
Yes, it's opulent, and everything is of the highest quality and spec imaginable. Yes, there's a wealth of activities and restaurants to keep you entertained. But what makes it special is its warmth, its whimsy and its sense of fun.

A $400 Million Gamble Created The Maldives' Wildest Resort

Speeding around the island in a jet car is one of many experiences available to guests at Siyam World. Sun Siyam Maldivian islands are known for quiet luxury: spa treatments, perhaps a snorkel or two and barefoot candlelight dinners on the beach. A formula that has worked for couples and those seeking pure relaxation. But one Maldivian entrepreneur sensed a shift in what tourists coming to his country wanted. Ahmed Siyam Mohamed began his career 35 years ago as a local tour guide. Over the past decades, he built a six-resort empire. Along the way he noticed many travelers wanting more than silence and a long list of spa treatments: They all craved things to do. So he took a big financial gamble to build Siyam World. An initial $350 million investment constructed the resort, followed by at least another $50 million for upgrades and to add more experiences since its opening four years ago. The resort now redefines what luxury in the Maldives means. 'Luxury in our resort means freedom. Freedom of movement, of experience and of joy," says Sara Siyam, marketing director at Siyam World and the entrepreneur's daughter. "There is no rule that luxury has to be quiet." Siyam World opened exactly as the new experience-based travel trend started to emerge. Tourists now look for destinations with engaging activities and individual experiences. This is the demand that Sara's father had anticipated. Like kids on recess—adults aren't leaving the fun to the youngest anymore at Siyam World's water park. Siyam World Industry analysts see the global marketplace for travel experiences offering a more than $1 trillion opportunity, with half of Gen Z indicating they prefer to invest in experiences. They'd rather cut costs on flights or accommodations and spend it on diving trips, cooking classes or sports camps at their destination. To compare: only a third of boomers say the same. This shift goes even deeper than demographics. TripAdvisor's latest Trendcast industry report analyzed billions of reviews and booking data to discover that yes, adults still want relaxation, but now they also crave an element of surprise and joy. They're not willing to leave the fun to the kids anymore. James Bond cruised around in a Moke, now guests at Siyam World can do the same in an electric version. Siyam World "At our core we want to give our guests the experiences they want on their holiday. And we deliver that, plus more, at the highest possible level," says Sara. It's a philosophy that's noticeable everywhere on the island, in lavish, one-of-a-kind activities. As Sara says, "Boredom simply isn't an option here." Guests can rent retro-styled electric mini Mokes to cruise around the 54-hectare island. Sara and her husband, resort manager Ausy Waseem, came up with this idea while watching "Live and Let Die", where James Bond zips around a fictional Caribbean island in a similar Moke. The $25,000 price tag per vehicle meant it took a bit of convincing, but, as Sara says, 'Thankfully my father was on board when he saw just how cool they look in that movie scene." Siyam World claims several other ambitious firsts for the Maldives. It's the only island where guests can horseback ride—and not on just any horses, but Marwaris from Rajasthan, a rare breed known for its distinctive curved ears and exceptional loyalty to humans. Caring for them required building an on-island veterinary hospital, which made adding a petting zoo with goats, rabbits, sheep and many different kinds of exotic parrots a natural next step. Siyam World's electric go-kart track draws kids and adults alike. Siyam World Many Maldivian islands have stray cats left behind by previous inhabitants. While most resorts choose to remove them, Siyam World decided to turn this challenge into a unique experience for guests. "Our vet provided the necessary treatments, and now we see how much our guests, especially childreapeciate their presence," says Sara. In fact, a cat café is in the works, where cappuccinos and cake will come with a side of cuddly cat. Siyam World's water park is the largest in the Maldives. Siyam World The water sports at Siyam World feature toys most guests would otherwise never encounter—and most hotel owners would probably balk at: too costly, too risky, and with questionable ROI. There's the CudaJet, an underwater backpack with jets that lets freedivers fly through the water. Then the Seabreacher, a one-man submarine that dives and leaps over waves. And Jet Cars—speedboats styled to look like sports cars, perfect for anyone who's dreamed of driving a Ferrari across the Indian Ocean. This no-expenses-spared philosophy extends beyond water toys to other activities, particularly sports like soccer. Local legend Anwar Abdul Gani runs daily training sessions on regulation-sized fields. Youth camps? Hosted by Premier League stars like Rio Ferdinand and Francesco Totti, flown in specifically for the occasion. Accommodations follow suit with every overwater villa sporting a private water slide and pool—luxuries typically reserved for the top-tier rooms. Ausy Waseem and Sara Siyam are in charge of experiences at Siyam World. The pink eMoke was their idea. Sun Siyam "We decided to give all guests the Maldivian holiday experience they've seen on social media, regardless of budget," explains Sara. With 16 distinct pricing categories and nearly 500 rooms, Siyam World caters to a broad range of tourists, from solo travelers to honeymooners, groups, and multi-generational families. Their entry-level overwater villas start at $700 per night, while four-bedroom beach residences (the highest category) begin at $4,000. Guests have been rewarding this vision with their praise and loyalty. Siyam World just got tenth place in TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice Awards. It is the only Maldivian resort to make the list. It also claimed No. 2 on the Best All-Inclusive Hotel list globally and No. 1 in Asia, placing it in the top 1% of current TripAdvisor listings worldwide. 'Siyam World was an entirely new concept in the Maldives—one that had never been tried before,' says Sara. 'But the massive investment paid off.' While most resorts are still grappling with how experience-driven travel is reshaping the industry, Siyam World has delivered on all fronts. A success of the resort may signal that the future of travel is wilder, more unexpected and fun than we ever imagined. As Ian Schrager, founder of the legendary nightclub Studio 54, once told me: 'We all like to have fun when we can. It's been like that for 5,000 years, and I don't think it will ever change.' Guests can book horse riding lessons on beautiful Marwari horses. Siyam World Getting There: How To Get To The Maldives There are direct flights to Malé from major hubs such as Doha, Dubai, or Singapore. From Malé International Airport, Siyam World is a 40-minute seaplane ride away ($475 per adult; included in stays seven nights or longer). Best Time To Visit The Maldives The best time to visit the Maldives is during the dry season from November to April. During this time there is little precipitation and temperatures range from the high 70s to the mid-80s.

This U.S. Beach Was Named One of the Best in the World—and It's Known for Its Stunning Quartz Sand

There are beautiful beaches in every corner of the world, that's true. But only 50 get the honor of landing on the annual World's 50 Best Beaches list. Each year, the list is put together with the expertise of thousands of travel experts. Then, the selections are further whittled according to a unique set of parameters, including categories like "Easy to Enter," "Often Calm Water," "Not Too Crowded," and "Frequently Idyllic." After evaluating all the data, just one beach in the U.S. made it on the list, and it also ranked as the 12th best beach in North America. Perhaps, as no surprise to those in the know, the best beach in the U.S. is Siesta Beach in Siesta Key, Florida. This Florida Keys destination is known for its soft sand, which consists mainly of pure quartz that originated from the Appalachian Mountains. Because of its quartz composition, the sand never gets too hot. "What makes Siesta Beach truly special is its sand,' said Suze Renner, from Luxury Columnist, in the report. 'The beach is famous for its 99 percent pure quartz sand, which is powdery white and incredibly fine." The water is also clear, shallow, calm, and easy to enter, making it easy to swim and wade in. There's also not a ton of development in the area, keeping the environment nearly pristine. This is somewhat unique to Siesta Beach compared to other beaches in the same region, as coastal Florida towns are constantly undergoing construction and urbanization. World's 50 Best Beaches' also gave Siesta Beach the "frequently Idyllic" designation, meaning 'your odds of perfect beach days are much higher than average.' For most of the year, there are fewer than 10 rainy days per month in Siesta Beach, with year-round average highs between 70 and 90 degrees. This isn't the first time that Siesta Beach has been named one of the best beaches in the U.S. Back in February, Tripadvisor named it the No. 1 U.S. beach, and the fourth best beach in the world. Its report also cited the beach's soft sand, calm waters, and quietness as well as frequent dolphin sightings and excellent sunsets. 'Siesta Key has the ultimate laid-back beach vibe,' Kelly Defebo, vice president of marketing and communications at Visit Sarasota County, told Travel + Leisure in June 2024. 'Sunsets anywhere are gorgeous, but they are not to be missed here."
