Fact check: Trump calls to prosecute Beyoncé based on a nonexistent $11 million payment
President Donald Trump over the weekend called for the prosecution of music superstar Beyoncé – based on something that did not actually happen. Trump claimed in a social media post that Beyoncé broke the law by supposedly getting paid $11 million for her endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris during an October 2024 event in Houston. But there is simply no basis for Trump's claim that Beyoncé received an $11 million payment related to the Harris campaign, let alone for the endorsement in particular. Federal campaign spending records show a $165,000 payment from the Harris campaign to Beyoncé's production company, which the campaign listed as a 'campaign event production' expense. A Harris campaign spokesperson told Deadline last year that they didn't pay celebrity endorsers, but were required by law to cover the costs connected to their appearances. Regardless of the merits of this particular $165,000 expenditure, it's far from an $11 million one. Nobody has ever produced any evidence for the claim of an eight-figure endorsement payment to Beyoncé since the claim that it was '$10 million' began spreading last year among Trump supporters on social media. Fact-check websites and PolitiFact looked into the '$10 million' claim during the campaign and did not find any basis for it. The White House did not immediately respond to a CNN request late Saturday for any evidence of Trump's $11 million figure. When Trump previously invoked the baseless figure, during an interview in February, he described his source in the vaguest of terms: 'Somebody just showed me something. They gave her $11 million.' A Harris spokesperson referred CNN on Saturday to a November social media post by Beyoncé's mother Tina Knowles, who called the claim of a $10 million payment a 'lie' and noted it was taken down by Instagram as 'False Information.' 'When In Fact: Beyonce did not receive a penny for speaking at a Presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harrris's (sic) Rally in Houston,' Knowles wrote. A spokesperson for Beyoncé told PolitiFact in November that the claim about a $10 million payment is 'beyond ridiculous.' What Trump wrote Sunday Trump revived the false claim in a social media post published after midnight early Sunday morning in Scotland, where he is visiting. He wrote that he is looking at 'the fact' that Democrats 'admit to paying, probably illegally, Eleven Million Dollars to singer Beyoncé for an ENDORSEMENT.' Democratic officials actually reject the claim of an $11 million payment. The White House did not immediately respond to CNN's request for any evidence of a Democratic admission of such a payment. Trump went on to criticize other payments from the Harris campaign to organizations connected to prominent endorsers. He asserted without evidence that these payments were inaccurately described in spending records. And he wrongly asserted that it is 'TOTALLY ILLEGAL' to pay for political endorsements, though no federal law forbids endorsement payments. Trump concluded: 'Kamala, and all of those that received Endorsement money, BROKE THE LAW. They should all be prosecuted! Thank you for your attention to this matter.' Trump has repeatedly called for the prosecution of political opponents. His Saturday post about Harris and celebrity endorsements was an escalation from a post in May, when he said he would call for a 'major investigation' on the subject but did not explicitly mention prosecutions.

Spanish teenager investigated over AI naked images of classmates
MADRID (Reuters) -Spanish police said on Sunday they were investigating a 17-year-old on suspicion of using artificial intelligence to deepfake nude images of female classmates for sale. Sixteen young women at an educational institute in Valencia, in southeastern Spain, complained about the AI-generated images of them which were circulating on social media and online. In December, a teenage girl complained to police that AI-generated video and faked photos resembling her "completely naked" were posted on a social media account started under her name. 'Photos of various people, all of them minors, appeared on this account. All these photos had been modified from the originals, which had been manipulated so that the people in them appeared completely naked,' the Spanish Civil Guard said in a statement on Sunday. A 17-year-old boy is under investigation for alleged corruption of minors. The Spanish government said in March said it would put forward a law to treat such deepfaked sexual imagery created by AI without consent as a crime but the bill has so far not been passed by parliament. In September 2023, Spain was shocked when 15 minors in Extremadura, in southwest Spain, were investigated for using AI to produce fake naked images of their female schoolmates. They were later sentenced to a year's probation.

A Michigan hospital treating 11 patients who were stabbed by a man at a Walmart on Saturday in Traverse City says the victims are showing "encouraging signs" as they recover. Four people are in serious condition while seven others are described as fair, Munson Healthcare wrote in an updated post on Facebook on Sunday. Meanwhile, a 42-year-old suspect remains in custody although his identity and a possible motive have not yet been released by officials. Why It Matters The community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the attack, which authorities said appeared to be random. Videos and witness accounts recalled the sudden violent outburst from the man who appeared to have acted alone and touted both the public and law enforcement response as swift. Traverse City is a small town that attracts many tourists during the summer months. What To Know The suspect attacked multiple people in the Walmart near the store's checkout area with a folding knife just before 5 p.m. on Saturday, the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook on Saturday night. The man was quickly apprehended by witnesses before being taken into custody by law enforcement, according to the post. "I want to acknowledge there was citizen involvement in assisting in taking the individual into custody," Sheriff Michael Shea said during a Saturday press conference. Initially, hospital officials reported that six victims were in critical condition and five were serious. Three of the victims needed to have surgery. "Over the past 12 hours, we've seen encouraging signs of recovery from our patients," Munson Healthcare wrote in its updated post, noting that everyone was out of critical condition. Our Thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families. We will update when additional information is available." Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement on social media: "Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence." FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said in a post on X: "FBI personnel are responding to provide any necessary support to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office in their investigation of the attacks at the Walmart." Joe Pennington, Walmart spokesperson, told Newsweek in an email Saturday night: "Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we're thankful for the swift action of first responders." What Happens Next? The investigation into the motive and circumstances of the attack remains underway. The Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. local time on Sunday to provide more information on the investigation. Walmart's status for reopening remains uncertain pending law enforcement's investigation and site clearance.
