A biotech company has, sort of, revived the long-extinct dire wolf

It's a fierce, majestic beast that disappeared thousands of years ago, save for artistic renderings in books and on screen, as in Game of Thrones.
Or, maybe, it's just a grey wolf with a few tweaks.
American biotech company Colossal Biosciences made a surprise announcement Monday, claiming it had brought the dire wolf back from the dead, thus achieving the company's first successful "de-extinction."
Colossal showcased videos of the fluffy white wolf pups roaming in its 2,000-acre habitat at an undisclosed location in the northern U.S., marking a big win for the company that is also working on reviving the woolly mammoth, the dodo and the Tasmanian tiger.
But some scientists say that while the wolves' existence is an impressive feat, they are not exactly as advertised.
"I want to see some peer-reviewed papers coming out of this, to get a better sense of what actually was done and what's known and what's not done," said Hank Greely, director of Stanford University's Center for Law and the Biosciences.
He says seeing the puppies put a smile on his face, and was a welcome surprise in an otherwise bleak news landscape.
But in his view, the creation is more of a "dire-ish wolf."
"I do think that it is important for people to remember that these are not dire wolves. There are grey wolves that have some dire wolf characteristics," Greely said. "On the other hand, they seem to be closer to dire wolves than anything else anybody's seen for 13,000 years, and that's pretty cool. And they're cute as hell."
Once hunted large prey
The large wolf species roamed the Americas for more than 100,000 years, before going extinct some 13,000 years ago.
It was believed to have hunted large prey like horses, bison and giant sloths, and to have disappeared largely because its prey species went extinct — partly because of hunting by humans.
Colossal's chief scientific officer Beth Shapiro says scientists extracted DNA from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old inner ear bone from a dire wolf skull, and extracted and sequenced the DNA to assemble genomes.
They determined the grey wolf was its closest living relative — "99.5 per cent identical" in DNA, she says — and similar in appearance but bigger, more muscular and with a lighter coloured coat, wider skull and stronger jaw.
Scientists then altered grey wolf cells to give them dire wolf traits, making 20 edits in 14 genes before creating embryos and implanting them into large domestic hounds.
Three of the eight dogs used as surrogate mothers gave birth to dire wolves, Shapiro said, and the mothers were then adopted out anonymously through the American Humane Society — "so, somewhere out there, there are families that have adopted a dog that gave birth to a dire wolf, and they don't know."
Colossal says two male pups, Romulus and Remus, were born on Oct. 1 — putting them now in the early stages of adolescence — while Khaleesi, a female, was born on Jan. 30, and is almost at the age where she can be "introduced to the boys," Shapiro said.
Kevin Campbell, a professor at the University of Manitoba's Department of Biological Sciences, says while the pups look very much like dire wolves, it's hard to know how similar they are physiologically.
"They edited 20 different mutations… which affected 14 genes. And to put this in perspective, a wolf probably has 22- or 23,000 different genes," he said. "Right now what we have is a 99.999 per cent grey wolf, with .001 per cent dire wolf."
Bringing back the phenotypes
Shapiro acknowledges the pups are not exactly the same as the dire wolves of yore, but says the idea was to create something with the same characteristic features that can live a healthy life in the modern age.
"When we're thinking about de-extinction, we're not imagining that we're going to recreate something that's genetically identical to something that used to be alive," she told CBC News. "This is impractical and probably also not what we want. Instead, we want to bring back these phenotypes, the extinct traits that defined this species."
Colossal CEO Ben Lamm says the project started about two years ago, as a way to get people talking about wolves and saving the critically endangered red wolf.
On that front, the private, Dallas-based company simultaneously announced Monday it had also produced four cloned red wolves using a new, less invasive technique it developed while working on the dire wolves.
Lamm says several Indigenous American communities have expressed interest in having dire wolves reintroduced on their land, but says that would be a complicated process requiring extensive consultation with landowners, governments and other stakeholders.
For now, Colossal is closely studying the dire pups and has no plans to introduce them to a wild habitat.
Some have criticized Colossal's de-extinction projects for taking attention away from the less flashy work being done by organizations dedicated to conserving existing species and their habitats.
Joe Walston, head of global conservation at the Wildlife Conservation Society, says he appreciates that de-extinction projects can inspire people to think about species conservation, and he's not opposed to using technology as one tool to help preserve species like the red wolf.
But most species, he says, can recover at an "incredible rate" if their habitats are simply conserved and left alone.
"We have tigers, we have lions, we have wolves themselves, we have these great predators ranging this earth which are in trouble and need our help," he said.
"Sometimes we get too distracted by the newness of something and forget that what we have already on Earth at the moment is the most remarkable assemblage of species the world has ever seen."

The group of universities have put together a series of proposed options and opportunities under the Polaris platform and argue both Quebec and Ottawa have a role to play in making them happen. Vincent Poitout, vice-rector of research and innovation at Universite de Montreal, says there is a window to transform a very unfortunate situation in science, particularly in the United States, into an opportunity for Canada. 'The goal is to reposition Canada as a superpower in research and innovation and to restore its place among the world leaders,' Poitout said in an interview. 'Canada must seize the moment, and the moment won't necessarily last very long (…) It's a global competition, so the time to do it is now.' The universities note a recent survey published in the journal Nature that found 75 per cent of researchers in the United States are considering leaving the country. The Quebec institutions are suggesting the creation of new research chairs in strategic sectors such as artificial intelligence, health and biodiversity. There is also a call to offer targeted scholarships in order to recruit prospective doctoral and post-doctoral students. In addition, the group is calling for supports for early-career researchers and investment in modernizing research infrastructure. Dominique Berube, vice-president of research and innovation at McGill University, said there has been much discussion in Canada's research community about how best to support American colleagues and maintain collaboration while balancing provincial and national priorities of ensuring sovereignty in research and other domains. The universities describe their proposals as 'well-considered' and 'scalable.' 'As much as we do recognize that there are a lot of priorities that need to be addressed — and we don't want to diminish in any in any way the many challenges that the governments are facing — nevertheless, all nations across the world are investing massively at this moment in technologies and in science,' Berube said. In Canada, which could have claimed some sort of leadership in artificial intelligence or quantum computing, the country risks losing that advantage. The Polaris proposals also require the help of the federal government to fast track immigration for researchers wanting to come to Canada. While some proposals target researchers based in the United States, particularly Quebecers and Canadians pursuing careers there, the initiatives aim to attract talent from around the world by 'offering them a space for freedom of thought, scientific rigour, innovation, and unparalleled creativity to advance their research.' 'We've got great talent in Canada right now, but there's talent everywhere in the world that might have thought about going to the United States and now there needs to be other opportunities, and that's what we want to be able to offer,' Berube said. There's no deadline to act, but the government and higher education institutions need to be ready as students and researchers consider their options. The group statement notes European countries have already committed 'significant resources' to universities for recruitment. 'I think that in the next year, that's the moment that we need to address the recruitment of researchers,' Berube said. 'And after that, the investments must slowly come.' China Backs Students to Influence Japan's Research and Academia

In the United States, concerns about Chinese influence on university campuses have escalated. US authorities have scrutinized institutions like Harvard for accepting large donations from entities linked to the Chinese government, and have arrested researchers with ties to China for concealing affiliations with its military. The FBI has repeatedly warned that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is systematically targeting American universities to acquire cutting-edge technology and sensitive research. Washington is tightening oversight on foreign scholars and funding, and Japan is now facing a similar dilemma, yet seems far less prepared. Japan is ramping up support for foreign doctoral students, offering up to ¥2.9 million JPY ($20,040 USD) per year. However, one question looms large: Who exactly is benefiting? According to university professor Rui Sasaki, the answer is increasingly "Chinese students," and he argues that's a dangerous trend Japan can no longer ignore. "Over 40% of these government-supported doctoral students are Chinese," Sasaki explained in a recent interview with JAPAN Forward. "Meanwhile, Japanese students are being left behind. It's both unfair and risky." University of Tokyo's Akamon Gate Sasaki points to the swelling ranks of Chinese students at top universities such as the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, and Waseda. What may seem like a benign form of international exchange, he warns, actually carries national security implications. "China isn't a G7 country," he said. "It's a dictatorship. We must face that reality." At the center of his concern is the CSC, the China Scholarship Council. Thousands of Chinese students abroad, including in Japan, are funded under this program. But there's a catch: recipients must sign secret contracts pledging loyalty to the Chinese government. "Their families are restricted from leaving China. Embassies and consulates monitor them and they must submit regular reports," Sasaki said. "If the Chinese state demands something, like sensitive data, they cannot refuse." This dynamic poses a serious national security risk, Sasaki warns, particularly in research-intensive fields like science and engineering. "In Tokushima, authorities arrested a Chinese researcher for stealing data. There are likely more cases that go unreported," he noted. The concern isn't abstract. Other democracies have already sounded the alarm. Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands have investigated CSC-funded students. Some were later linked to the People's Liberation Army or Chinese state security agencies. So why hasn't Japan taken similar precautions? "Japan has no real counterintelligence infrastructure," Sasaki lamented. "Even if you suspect espionage, the legal framework doesn't allow wiretapping in economic or national security cases. The only tools we have are for terrorism or drug crimes." But the risk doesn't stop at individual espionage. Sasaki says Japan's academic institutions are slowly being infiltrated from within. Some CSC-funded students stay on after graduation and work their way up the academic ladder. "They become associate professors or even full professors at Japanese universities," he said. "Then they begin teaching Chinese-style history to Japanese students." Sasaki also draws attention to Confucius Institutes, Chinese government-backed cultural and language centers operating worldwide, often housed within universities. While many Western countries have shuttered these institutions, citing concerns over propaganda and surveillance, Japan still plays host to several. "Waseda University still has one," Sasaki said. "When Hu Jintao or Jiang Zemin visited, the venues filled with Chinese nationals. Just from that scene, you'd think the place was already occupied." Confucius Institute Headquarters in Beijing. (© Kyodo) He warns that this isn't simply about culture — it's part of the CCP's "United Front" strategy, which aims to subtly expand influence through overseas Chinese communities, student associations, and academics. "A lot of Chinese people probably don't even realize they're being used. They're not all spies in the strict sense. But they are being used," he explained. The issue is further complicated by what Sasaki sees as Japan's naivete. "We're still clinging to the idea that more exchange automatically means more peace," he said. "But real internationalization isn't about open borders for everyone. It's about mutual respect and clear rules." He contrasts this with what he calls "globalist delusion" — the belief that authoritarian states will liberalize through engagement alone. "After the Tiananmen massacre, the West imposed sanctions. But Japan broke ranks first, sending the Emperor to China. We thought they'd democratize if we were kind. Instead, we helped them entrench their regime." While Sasaki's warnings may seem alarmist to some, they are part of a growing body of concern shared by intelligence officials, academics, and journalists in liberal democracies worldwide. What sets Japan apart, he says, is how little public awareness exists. "We're not even having the conversation," he said. Even now, he fears Japan is ill-prepared for the future. Brownstein: Montreal producer takes deep dive in documentary Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster

By The documentary begins intriguingly enough: 'Where do you want to go in the ocean? What is the most known site in the ocean? It's clearly the Titanic.' The speaker is well-heeled, maverick American inventor Stockton Rush, whose mission it was to take paying passengers 3,800 metres into the Atlantic Ocean in his mini-sub to scope the ruins of the Titanic luxury liner that sank on its maiden voyage in April 1912 after striking an iceberg 600 kilometres off the coast of Newfoundland. More than 1,500 passengers died in that disaster. Five died, including Rush, when his submersible the Titan imploded on its way down to the Titanic wreck on June 18, 2023. The documentary Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster takes a deep and disturbing plunge into the apparent arrogance of Titan mastermind Rush, the co-founder and CEO of the OceanGate undersea exploration company. The doc, co-produced by Montreal GalaFilm boss Arnie Gelbart and directed and co-scripted by acclaimed British director Pamela Gordon, begins streaming Friday on CBC Gem. It will also be broadcast on CBC Television June 20. The production team has done a thorough job in bringing this tragedy into fuller focus, aided and abetted by insightful interviews, rare footage of the Titan's final voyage and other failed dives plus access to the U.S. Coast Guard's investigation. Experts interviewed had misgivings about the Titan's structure, particularly its carbon-fibre hull, even if Rush had pulled off some dives prior to its final descent. There were other ominous warning signs, like seeping water damage and cracking engine sounds. Mutters one skeptic: 'Everyone stepping on board the Titan was risking their life.' The feeling was that Rush was 'hell-bent' on taking the Titan to dangerous new lows under the ocean, someone seeking to 'democratize deep-sea exploration.' Rush was an engineer who initially dreamed of becoming an astronaut. But when it became apparent he was never going to make it to 'Jupiter or Mars,' he turned his sights in the opposite direction. He concluded that would require a 'special sub.' Rush had the money, vision and drive to do so. He was a patrician whose roots went way back, with two of his ancestors having signed the U.S. Declaration of Independence. History, as is often the case, repeats itself here. How's this for cruel irony? Rush's wife's great-great-grandparents, owners of the fabled Macy's department-store chain, perished on the Titanic. They were rumoured to have been the richest passengers aboard. Christine Dawood is understandably livid. Among the five who died aboard the imploded Titan were her billionaire British-Pakistani husband, Shahzada, 48, and son Suleman, 19. She blames 'ego and arrogance' for their deaths. Gelbart has long been consumed by the Titanic and Titan. He brings to the documentary a wealth of factoids about both as well as Rush's participation. 'Rush had done some 88 dives prior to his last, but not all successful ones,' Gelbart says in a phone interview. 'It went down successfully only six times.' Gelbart had been involved since 2017 when Rush had come up with a working model of the Titan, which he had initially tested in the Bahamas. Then ensued a lot of correspondence with Rush, who was to move to his company's home in Everett, Wash. before heading to his last base in St. John's. 'He was looking for publicity, and I first wanted to make an Imax film, The Return to Titanic. What he was building for us was a remote camera that would go inside the hold of the Titanic, full of cars and furniture and other stuff that no one had seen since 1912.' Gelbart's project was initially to be a four-part series, retelling the Titanic story but using Rush's submersible to examine what was left of it, including its interior. 'We were looking for a Hollywood celebrity for the project,' Gelbart says. 'I would have liked to go down there myself, but because it was something like $250,000 a seat, it was not feasible. Instead, we included that price in our budget for a celebrity, someone to tell the Titanic story by being next to it.' Amid all the experimenting, failed testing and rebuilding of the original Titan, Gelbart stayed in touch with Rush. 'He was a great salesman and really believed in the Titan. As an engineer, he could talk the talk. We trusted him. We didn't think he was creating something that was fatally flawed. He explained the technology, but what do I know about carbon fibre? 'He moved his operation to St. John's for a number of reasons, one of which was so he wouldn't need to certify it in Canada. But on the downside was the weather there. And with water freezing, then thawing on the Titan lining outside, this could have created damage. In the final report of the U.S. Coast Guard, we heard this could have been one of the mitigating factors in the disaster.' That official report has yet to be released. Why? 'When (U.S. president Donald) Trump took over this year, he fired the head of the U.S. Coast Guard. So they're not allowed to release it until they get a new head.' Gelbart was shocked like most everyone else upon learning of the implosion. 'But 24 hours later, we had the commission from the BBC, Discovery U.S.A. and the CBC to make this documentary. It was such a whirlwind turnaround for a story that much of the world had been watching and waiting for news about what happened to the Titan and its occupants, until the fate was learned.' Gelbart's GalaFilm has more than 120 film and TV credits and has won dozens of awards, including multiple Gémeaux/Geminis and one Prime Time Emmy Award for the Cirque du Soleil series Fire Within. 'But this was the first time in my life I was involved with anything as well-known as this one.'
