CrossCountry issues Scotland 'do not travel' warning this weekend

Glasgow Times2 days ago
The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union has announced industrial action between Saturday and Monday, affecting CrossCountry services only.
CrossCountry will operate a reduced timetable over the weekend – with no services on Saturday. Passengers are advised not to travel on Saturday and to travel on either side of the bank holiday weekend, or claim a full refund.

Services on Sunday are also likely to be subject to cancellations across all CrossCountry routes.
A very limited service will operate on Monday between 8am and 6pm, and passengers are advised to check their journeys carefully before travelling and expect all services to be busy.
There are also planned engineering work on Monday in the West Midlands, which may impact some of the CrossCountry services that do run.
RMT has said that the action was a result of a 'breakdown' in industrial relations.
Shiona Rolfe, CrossCountry's managing director, said: 'We are disappointed for our passengers that the RMT has announced strikes on Saturday 23 and Monday 25 August.
'It is hugely disappointing to not operate any services on Saturday, knowing the inevitable disruption to many of our passengers' journeys over the Bank Holiday weekend.
'We are committed to reaching an agreement with the RMT and remain available to continue talks.'

Reading Festival revellers urged to avoid trains as strikes cause disruption on Bank Holiday weekend

With an estimated 90,000 people attending Reading Festival this weekend, attendees could struggle arriving and leaving as members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) Union go on strike at CrossCountry trains. There will be no services scheduled to operate between Birmingham, Reading and the South Coast on Saturday 23 August or Monday. Cancellations are also expected across all routes on Sunday. The strike for these members is over pay and conditions. A spokesperson for Cross Country said they "advise Reading festival goers to use alternative modes of transport and are sorry for the inevitable disruption this will cause." The provider is also advising passengers to travel either side of the weekend or to claim a full refund. Network Rail will also be carrying out essential engineering work in the Birmingham area on Sunday and Monday, with attendees from Reading travelling to and from that area to check their journeys before they travel. It comes as the RAC is urging drivers to set off early or prepare to spend longer in traffic this weekend. The insurance provider said about 17.6 million getaway trips are to be made by car across the UK from Friday, with the South East and South West regions set to experience some of the worst congestion.

Police to patrol 'overwhelmed' North Wales beach this Bank Holiday weekend

Police will be patrolling one of Wales' most popular beaches over the Bank Holiday weekend. It follows a rise in unruly and illicit behaviour at Traeth Llanddwyn near the village of Newborough, Anglesey. North Wales Police officers will be working alongside wardens from Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to clamp down on illegal fires, barbecues and wild camping. Offenders are being warned they could face fines. With another large influx of visitors expected this weekend, site manager NRW wants to avoid a repeat of what happened last Saturday (August 16). Wardens were forced to lock down the beach and adjacent forest after reportedly becoming 'overwhelmed' by groups of visitors erecting tents and lighting fires. The area, part of Newborough national nature reserve, has been popularised on social media. It's also gained fame after featuring in HBO's House of the Dragon series. Dylan Williams, NRW's operations manager for North West Wales, said Anglesey Council wardens will also be patrolling the village and nearby roads to tackle illegal parking. He said there has been an increase in visitors lighting fires and barbecues during this summer's dry weather. Both activities are banned as they risk causing 'potentially devastating' fires in 2,500-acre Newborough Forest. The forest's Corsican pine trees line the beach, which has a romantic tidal island and is often rated among the best in Britain. Offering dramatic views across to the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia), the beach and its forest has been attracting increasing numbers of illegal campers, often leaving areas scattered with litter. Mr Williams said: 'We are expecting a high number of visitors this weekend and are reminding people a full ban remains in place for all barbecues and fires following a rise in incidents. 'Following the exceptionally dry weather, it only takes one stray spark to cause a fire that could devastate wildlife and communities and put our emergency services under extra pressure. We also want to remind visitors that overnight stays are not allowed. 'The site is home to some of Wales' most precious habitats and supports a range of rare wildlife. We must maintain a balance between the wishes of individuals to enjoy the outdoors and our responsibilities to protect nature and to respect local communities. 'The vast majority of people visiting behave responsibly and we would like to thank them for doing their bit. We hope that will continue as we head into the Bank Holiday weekend.' The reserve's popularity means nearby Newborough is often brought to a standstill by traffic waiting for parking spaces to become available at the beach car park. To tackle these problems, new traffic management was introduced this summer. Parking fees were also hiked dramatically and are now up to £15 for longer stays. NRW said Llanddwyn's main beach car park, and two smaller ones nearby in the forest, now close once they become full. Get the best island stories from our Anglesey newsletter - sent every Friday During busy periods, such as weekends and Bank Holidays, this is expected to be before 10am. The three car parks won't reopen until later in the afternoon – even if spaces become available. Meanwhile, Anglesey Council's civil enforcement officers will continue patrolling Newborough village and the A4080 near Llyn Parc Mawr. This summer they have been enforcing restrictions following a surge in irresponsible parking. NRW is asking all visitors to 'park safely, legally and responsibly'. A spokesperson added: 'We are also asking visitors to consider one of the many other beaches and destinations on Anglesey for their visit.'
