Al-Ittihad wins King's Cup to complete domestic double

Arab Times2 days ago

JEDDAH, May 31: Al-Ittihad added the King's Cup to its Saudi Pro League triumph, defeating Al-Qadisiyah 3-1 in front of 51,331 fans at Al-Enma Stadium, completing a historic domestic double.
Having secured the league title just days earlier, Al-Ittihad lifted the King's Cup for the first time since 2018, when it also won 3-1 over Al-Faisaly at the same venue.
The victory was powered by French striker Karim Benzema, who scored twice (34', 90+4'), while Algerian midfielder Houssem Aouar added a third in the 43rd minute. Al-Qadisiyah's lone goal came from a penalty by Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (45+6). The team later went down to ten men after Argentine Ezequiel Fernandez received a second yellow card in the 81st minute.
The title marks Al-Ittihad's 10th King's Cup win and grants its international stars—Benzema, N'Golo Kanté, and Fabinho—a historic milestone in their club careers. According to Opta, Benzema secured the second domestic double of his career, the first being with Lyon in the 2007–08 season. Kanté and Fabinho, meanwhile, celebrated their first domestic double despite previous success in European and international competitions.
Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn also played a key role in the team's successful season, contributing goals and assists. However, his achievements in Saudi Arabia came amid ongoing tensions with Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman, who left him out of the national squad following his transfer to the Saudi league.
Bergwijn, excluded throughout the season, criticized Koeman's handling of the situation, stating last September: "I don't want to play under this coach again. He disrespected me and never gave me a chance to explain myself."
Following the double triumph, Bergwijn further addressed the issue, telling TV reporters: "Playing for the Netherlands is an honor, but the support from Al-Ittihad fans means more to me right now. My focus is here."
Although rumors persist about a possible return to the national team, Bergwijn's strained relationship with Koeman and continued criticism of the coach may complicate any comeback.

Pizzi rallies Kuwait ahead of decisive World Cup qualifiers against Palestine and South Korea

KUWAIT CITY, June 1: Kuwait continues its intensive daily training sessions at Ali Sabah Al-Salem Stadium, home of Al-Nasr Club, as it prepares for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Palestine (June 5) and South Korea (June 10). These matches represent the ninth and tenth (final) rounds of Group B in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers for the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Under the guidance of Argentine coach Juan Pizzi, the technical staff met with players before the first training session, stressing the importance of maximum effort, particularly in the pivotal clash against Palestine. Pizzi urged the team to maintain focus, strictly follow tactical instructions, and execute their roles to keep alive their slim hopes of reaching the Asian World Cup play-offs. Currently, Kuwait sits at the bottom of Group B with 5 points. It must win both upcoming matches to stay in contention. However, qualification will also depend on Oman losing its remaining two games. The group standings are led by South Korea with 16 points, followed by Jordan (13), Iraq (12), Oman (10), and Palestine (6). The Kuwaiti team will begin a training camp starting tomorrow, continuing through the match days. It is scheduled to travel to Seoul next Friday to face the South Korean side. Coach Pizzi has called up a 26-player roster for the qualifiers, including key names like Saud Al-Hoshan, Fahad Al-Hajri, Yousef Nasser, and Ahmed Al-Dhafiri, among others. Meanwhile, the Palestine national team delegation is set to arrive in Kuwait today to commence its training sessions immediately. Palestine striker Wissam Abu Ali will join the squad from Cairo, and Oday Al-Dabbagh is already participating in the training camp, which started in mid-May.

Kazma appoints Croatian Tadić as new head coach

KUWAIT CITY, June 1: Kazma announced the appointment of Croatian coach Dragan Tadić as the new head coach of the first football team, replacing Bosnian manager Rosmir Cefko. Although the club had initially hoped to retain Cefko for the upcoming season, the Bosnian coach received several offers from Gulf clubs and paused contract renewal talks. He later departed for vacation in his home country and ultimately declined to continue with Kazma. Born in 1973, Tadić brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record. Most recently, he led Bahraini side Sitra to a strong season, securing third place in the league, reaching the final of the King's Cup (finishing as runners-up), and qualifying for the 2025 Gulf Champions League. Tadić's playing career included stints with Croatian clubs Rijeka, Novalja, Sibenik, Sesveta, and Astra before transitioning to coaching in 2011. He began his managerial journey with Croatian side Rijeka, followed by roles at Kavala and Slaven Belupo, with multiple returns to Rijeka over the years. He also had international coaching spells with Losinj (Austria) and Mesaimeer (Qatar), and most recently managed Al-Bukayriyah in Saudi Arabia. Kazma's decision to appoint Tadić comes amid a rebuilding phase following a challenging season, which saw the team exit early from local competitions and narrowly avoid relegation through the Zain Premier League playoffs, where they finished fourth. In terms of player contracts, the club has chosen to renew the deals of Jordanian winger Anas Al-Awadat and Beninese forward Samson Akiniola. They have also added two new players to the squad: Jordanian midfielder Ali Al-Azaizeh and Youssef Abu Al-Jazar. Negotiations are currently ongoing to sign an Algerian defender, which would complete the club's quota of foreign players.

PSG finally wins the Champions League title

MUNICH, June 1, (AP): Paris Saint-Germain, Champions League winner. At long last, the club that was transformed by Qatari billions and bought and sold a succession of the world's greatest players in an extravagant bid to get to the top has got its hands on the big one. European club soccer's grandest prize has a new home after PSG thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 in Saturday's final in Munich. "It's in the bag, it's coming home with us to Paris tomorrow,' coach Luis Enrique said. "My first day at the PSG campus, I said the ultimate goal was to fill the trophy cabinet. The only trophy missing was the Champions League. Here we have ticked that box.' It was the trophy that not even Lionel Messi, Neymar, or Kylian Mbappe could deliver to the French club. Luis Enrique has achieved it after overseeing PSG's shift from the era of Galactico signings to one of genuine team-building. Fitting then that Désiré Doué, the 19-year-old French forward, emblematic of the club's new generation, was the chief inspiration and player of the match as PSG recorded the biggest win in a final in the competition's 70-year history. In a scintillating performance, Doué scored two goals and set up another goal in little over an hour on the field before being substituted. "It is wonderful, it is magical, we are rewriting the history of this club and French football,' he said. Achraf Hakimi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and substitute Senny Mayulu all scored around Doue's double in a game in which PSG could have run out an even bigger winner.
