Oman's Mawarid exports maiden bulk shipment of copper concentrates
MUSCAT - Mawarid Mining LLC, the mining arm of the MB Group of Companies, has announced the successful export of its first bulk shipment of copper concentrates produced at the Lasail Copper Concentrator using ore from the Al Ghuzayn Copper Mine. Around 7,500 wmt (wet metric tonnes) of copper concentrates, with a concentration of +18.5 per cent copper, were shipped from Sohar Port to China for further treatment and refining, under an offtake agreement with Trafigura PTE Limited.
Mawarid continues the ramp up of the Al Ghuzayn Mine, supported by the mining contractor Gulf Rock Engineering LLC. To date, Mawarid has mined over 222,000 tonnes of ore and completed over 5,000 meters of underground primary and secondary development.
Mawarid's Managing Director Tariq al Barwani said: 'Mawarid has been able to develop the Ghuzayn Mine and refurbish the Lasail concentrator with the support of our equity and debt partners, in collaboration with the various contractors working at each of the operations. We are particularly pleased with 1.0 million LTI-free work hours being achieved, showcasing our commitment to safe working processes and standards. The progress of the mine ramp up and achieving the 1st bulk shipment of 7,500 wmt, which is in accordance with the feasibility study, shows an excellent effort by the Mawarid team, our funding and contractual partners. Mawarid is not only focused on operational excellence but is also committed to contributing to the nation's socio-economic development and long-term growth in line with Oman's vision 2040 which includes a building a productive and diversified economy.'

Funding for the development of the Ghuzayn Project was in the form of equity from Mohammed Al Barwani LLC, debt facility from Oman Development Ban, in addition to a debt facility from Dhofar Islamic Bank LLC with pre-shipment and working capital facilities from Trafigura PTE Limited. Mawarid's Lasail Concentrator is processing the Ghuzayn ore at a rate of 100 wmt per hour and producing saleable concentrate. The feed grade of the ore processed at the Lasail Concentrator is averaging 1.85% Cu, resulting in a concentrate grade of +19.0% Cu in concentrate, with a moisture level of 9.02%.

Oman reviews bids for Bowsher Storm Water Channel project
Muscat Municipality is expected to award the design and construction contract for Bowsher Storm Water Channel project in the third quarter of 2025, a source aware of the details said. The commercial bids were opened on 26 May 2025. Oman: Sorouh residential project work in full swing
Muscat: Eighteen projects of the Sorouh Integrated Neighbourhoods and Housing Schemes Initiative have made significant progress in different governorates with some of them nearing completion of the first phase and ready to deliver housing units. The total investment value of the project exceeds RO 600 million covering a vast area of over 6 million square metres. Habiba al Amri, Project Engineer at the Sorouh Initiative, said that construction and infrastructure work on the integrated residential neighbourhoods is in full swing across various governorates. 'Among the most prominent projects currently witnessing remarkable progress is the Al Azm neighbourhood in Al Rustaq, where 100 per cent of the units offered have been sold with approximately 40 per cent of the construction work completed in the first phase and the delivery is scheduled for June 2026. Construction work is also proceeding at a rapid pace in the Al Samou neighbourhood in Al Mudhaibi, which has also recorded full sales. The first phase is almost 20 per cent complete with delivery scheduled for December 2026.' The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning confirmed that the projects are not limited to their urban aspect alone, but also involve effective employment of national cadres with more than 360 Omanis working on the implementation of Sorouh projects. In addition, more than 145 small and medium enterprises have benefited from supply and contracting opportunities in 18 projects. In this regard, Sorouh represents a significant economic and social driver in the governorates, boosting local economy, providing job opportunities and supporting entrepreneurs. The ministry announced that the first phase of Sorouh involves18 projects on a total area of over 6 million square metres with an investment value exceeding RO 600 million benefiting more than 10,000 families. The ministry as signed 44 cooperation agreements to implement infrastructure works in several integrated residential neighbourhoods under the Sorouh initiative. These agreements cover 15 integrated Sorouh projects in different governorates including those of Al Ula, Al Ezz, Al Masarat, Al Shurooq, Al Naseem, Al Nama, Al Salam, Al Azm, Al Samou, Al Noor, Al Luban, Al Majd, Al Ahd, Hisn Al Zain and Tilal Al Nakhil. Mohammed bin Sulaiman al Kindi, Governor of Al Batinah North, said: 'The governorate attaches great importance to the integrated residential neighbourhood projects implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning across the governorates. Among these projects are Al Ezz neighbourhood in the Wilayat of Liwa and Al Majd neighbourhood in the Wilayat of Suhar which embody a modern vision for providing integrated residential environments. The availability of services and integrated infrastructure meet citizens' aspirations and keep pace with the rapid urban expansion in the governorate.' Najeeb bin Ali al Rawas, Governor of Al Dhahirah, said: 'Focusing on development and real estate projects in Al Dhahirah Governorate is a fundamental pillar of comprehensive development, given their pivotal impact in enhancing economic and social stability and providing modern urban environments that meet citizens' needs and aspirations. Insurers' total investment in Oman drops to $1,748mln
Muscat: Total investments by insurance companies in Oman amounted to approximately RO673.1mn by the end of 2024, compared to around RO838.6mn at the end of 2023, recording a sharp decline of nearly 20%. Data issued by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) indicated that investments by national insurance companies during 2024 stood at approximately RO427.24mn, while investments by foreign insurance companies totalled RO245.86mn, according to an Oman News Agency report. The financial data showed that national insurance companies' investments were primarily concentrated in bank deposits across general insurance, life insurance, and savings insurance categories in both 2023 and 2024. Investment in bank deposits accounted for 51.4% in 2024, up from 40.5% in 2023. In contrast, the total investment by national insurance companies in all other investment vehicles combined did not exceed 48.6% in 2024 and 59.5% in 2023. As for foreign insurance companies, their investments also focused on bank deposits (general, life, and savings), representing 65% in 2024, compared to 65.2% in 2023. Investments in government bonds reached 26% in 2024, up from 24.8% in 2023. The combined percentage of foreign companies' investments in other asset classes did not exceed 9% in 2024 and 10% in 2023. Statistics issued by the Financial Services Authority revealed that the total return on insurance companies' investments in 2024 fell by 30.1% to just over RO34mn, including RO21.975mn in returns fir national companies and RO12.071mn for foreign companies. Regarding investment returns by category, returns from real estate increased by 35%, while returns on bank deposits for general and health insurance rose by 17.8%. In contrast, returns on life and savings insurance deposits declined by 22.6%, and returns on government bonds fell by 9.1% between 2023 and 2024.
