Best stock recommendations today—from MarketSmith India

On Thursday, Indian equity benchmarks concluded a sixth consecutive positive session, albeit with modest gains, as profit-booking emerged at higher levels. Nifty 50 advanced 0.13% to close at 25,083.75 points, while the Sensex gained 0.17% to settle at 82,000.71. However, the broader market saw a pause in its recent rally, with both Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices closing in the red. Market sentiment was buoyed by positive domestic developments, including the government's proposal for GST rate rationalization. However, global cues remained cautious ahead of the highly anticipated Jackson Hole symposium, with the US markets experiencing a sell-off in technology stocks. Two stock recommendations by MarketSmith India for 22 August Nifty 50: How the benchmark index performed on 21 August Indian equities extended their upward momentum for a sixth straight session, with the Nifty 50 closing 94 points higher at 25,083 points and the Sensex rising 142 points to settle at 82,086. The index opened firmly and traded largely range-bound through the morning, briefly dipping to an intraday low of 24,960 before finding strong support and rebounding in the afternoon to test a high near 25,120. Sustained buying in financials, auto, and energy stocks supported the recovery, while IT stocks remained under pressure ahead of the US Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium. On the sectoral front, pharmaceuticals emerged as the top performer, with Cipla and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories leading the gains, while FMCG and auto stocks faced selling pressure. The market breadth was marginally in favour of advances on the NSE. On the technical front, the Nifty 50 decisively surpassed both its 50-DMA and the psychologically important 25,000 level, reinforcing a short-term bullish bias. The relative strength index (RSI) has been rising steadily over the past three sessions and now stands near 58, indicating strengthening momentum. Meanwhile, the MACD has turned marginally positive, signaling an easing of downside pressure. However, it continues below both its signal line and the zero axis, indicating that while sentiment has improved, a clear confirmation of a sustained trend reversal is yet to emerge. According to O'Neil's methodology of market direction, the market status has been downgraded to an 'Uptrend Under Pressure' as Nifty breached its 50-DMA and the distribution day count is at four. The index continued to trade above its 50-DMA, supported by strengthening momentum on both the daily and weekly charts. This constructive setup reinforces the near-term outlook, with the next key resistance zone identified at 25,250-25,350, provided the index sustains above 24,850. On the downside, a breach below 24,850 could trigger volatility and push the index into a critical support band of 24,650-24,850. Price action around these levels will remain crucial in determining the index's directional bias in the upcoming sessions. How did Nifty Bank perform? On Thursday, Bank Nifty opened on a strong note. However, it soon turned volatile, though it successfully defended the previous day's low. The index formed a bullish candle on the daily chart with a higher-high and higher-low price structure. However, it failed to close above its 21-DMA, indicating lingering resistance at higher levels. Strength in key constituents such as ICICI Bank (+0.99%), HDFC Bank (+0.12%), Kotak Bank (+0.07%), and PNB (+0.02%) supported the index, helping it end the session in positive territory. During the day, the index opened at 55,972.05, touched a high of 55,993.65, slipped to a low of 55,708.20, and eventually settled at 55,755.45. The RSI has been moving sideways and is currently positioned at 48, reflecting mild weakness in momentum. Meanwhile, the MACD has turned positive after several weeks of a negative crossover, but its position below the central line continues to signal caution. According to O'Neil's methodology of market direction, Bank Nifty remains in an 'Uptrend Under Pressure'. In this context, investors are advised to maintain selective exposure to high-quality stocks while emphasizing disciplined risk management to safeguard capital and focus only on high-conviction opportunities. From a technical perspective, immediate resistance is seen near the 21-DMA, and a decisive move above this level could open the path toward the 50-DMA around 56,300, strengthening the bullish momentum. On the downside, support is placed at the 100-DMA near 55,325, and a breach below this zone may trigger heightened volatility and extend the correction. Until then, the index is expected to trade within this defined range, with a selective bias toward large private sector banks. Vedanta demerger: Govt's key objections range from loans taken against national assets to liquidity concerns

Mumbai: The ministry of petroleum and natural gas has raised over a dozen objections to the proposed demerger of Vedanta Ltd into five listed companies, saying it could hamper the recovery of dues to the government. The objections include concerns over the company raising foreign loans by offering national oil assets as collateral, said a person directly aware of the government's case. The ministry also objected to Vedanta withholding $578 million in payments to the government as part of the production-sharing agreement for India's largest onshore crude oil block in Rajasthan, which is operated by Vedanta subsidiary Cairn Oil & Gas. Vedanta had announced its plan to demerge into six separately listed entities back in September 2023, aiming to complete the process by March 2025. On Wednesday, the National Company Law Tribunal asked Vedanta to respond within four weeks after the petroleum ministry objected to the proposed demerger, which could be delayed beyond September 2025 due to pending regulatory approvals—particularly from the tribunal. The ministry's other concerns include the liquidity position of Malco Energy, which has revenue- and production-sharing agreements for oil and natural gas with the Indian government. Malco is set to become a part of Vedanta Oil & Gas after the demerger. The ministry made its observations during a hearing at the NCLT in Mumbai, where Vedanta's application for the demerger was heard. The arguments of Vedanta's counsel could not be heard in the court on Wednesday due to a paucity of time. The case is next listed for hearing on 17 September. A spokesperson for Vedanta said that since the matter was sub-judice, the company would not be able to comment. The company will be making its submissions before the NCLT. "The proposed demerger is a strategic step to unlock long-term value by creating sector-focused, pure-play businesses with independent management teams. The petition for sanction of the Scheme was heard by the Hon'ble NCLT on 20 August and the hearing will continue on 17 September. Notably, the NCLT has also observed that arguments in a matter of this scale and significance cannot be concluded in a single hearing and fixed the next date of hearing after discussions with all parties," the spokesperson said. To assuage the concerns of the government, Vedanta has offered to submit an affidavit that it will release the pledge against the national assets against which foreign debt to the tune of ₹1,500-2,000 crore was raised, the person cited earlier said. However, the ministry was not satisfied with the offer. Vedanta has also offered to provide corporate guarantees to the ministry from Vedanta Ltd against the dues of Vedanta Oil & Gas after the demerger. The government has rejected this offer as well. The Vedanta Ltd stock ended 0.3% higher on the BSE on Thursday at ₹446.8. It has gained over 110% since the day the demerger was first announced on 29 September 2023. The benchmark Sensex has gained just under 25% during this period. Rajasthan dispute While Vedanta has offered to assuage the concerns of the ministry with regard to its offshore loans and liquidity position, no such offer has been made regarding the $578 million dispute over the Rajasthan oil and gas block. The dispute dates back to 2020 over revenue-sharing from the block, which produces over a quarter of India's domestic crude oil. The Directorate General of Hydrocarbons disallowed the sharing of almost $1.2 billion of development costs that Vedanta incurred on the development of the block. The case went into arbitration and an Arbitration Tribunal ruled in favour of Vedanta in November 2023. The Indian government then challenged the decision in the Delhi High Court, where it is being heard. Vedanta, however, recognized a benefit of $ 578 million ( ₹4,761 crore) in revenue from operations in FY24 and adjusted it against its liabilities to the government under the production-sharing agreement. However, the government said the award should be lower and has claimed a sum of $224 million from the company. In the NCLT, the petroleum ministry has objected to the company unilaterally enforcing the award even though the amount is yet to be officially quantified by the adjudicating authority and the case is pending before the Delhi High Court. 'The Group is of the view that the GoI computation is prima-facie contrary to the Award including clarifications issued by the Tribunal," as per notes to Vedanta's latest annual earnings report. 'As the Parties are unable to agree on quantum of the calculations, the matter will be decided by the Tribunal in the quantum proceedings." Other objections These are only three of the more than dozen objections raised by the ministry against Vedanta's planned demerger. The ministry also red-flagged the company's decision to demerge into five companies instead of six after receiving the approval of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) and the two main stock exchanges. On 13 August, Sebi issued an administrative warning to Vedanta for this breach. However, the market regulator's assent to the demerger stands, said a second person aware of the matter. A spokesperson for Vedanta told Mint on Wednesday that Sebi has offered no further comments on the merits of the demerger scheme in the NCLT. Following the demerger, the five firms will be Vedanta Aluminium, Vedanta Oil & Gas, Vedanta Power, Vedanta Iron and Steel and Vedanta Ltd, which will continue as the parent entity and hold shares of Hindustan Zinc. Shareholders of Vedanta will receive one share in each of the new companies.

The benchmark Sensex has been in the green for six consecutive sessions, its longest daily winning streak since late April this year. On Thursday, the Nifty50 added 33.20 points or 0.13% to close at 25,083.75, while the BSE Sensex advanced 142.87 points or 0.17%, ending the day at 82,000.71. The Bank Nifty, however, showed relative underperformance, inching up by just 56.95 points or 0.10% to settle at 55,755.45, reflecting profit-taking in financial names. Top three stock picks by Ankush Bajaj for 22 August Buy: CIPLA LTD — Current Price: ₹1,592.80 Buy: HCL TECHNOLOGIES LTD — Current Price: ₹1,493.50 Buy: HDFC BANK LTD — Current Price: ₹1,991.20 Market Wrap On Thursday, 21 August 2025, the Nifty 50 added 33.20 points, or 0.13%, to close at 25,083.75, while the BSE Sensex advanced 142.87 points, or 0.17%, ending the day at 82,000.71. The Bank Nifty, however, showed relative underperformance, inching up by just 56.95 points, or 0.10%, to settle at 55,755.45, reflecting profit-taking in financial names. Sector-wise, market action remained mixed. Weakness was visible in FMCG (−0.64%), Energy (−0.48%), and PSE (−0.47%), which capped broader gains. In contrast, strength came from Pharma (+0.95%), Healthcare (+0.93%), and Realty (+0.38%), showcasing investors' tilt towards cyclicals and consumption-oriented counters. In the stock-specific space, Mankind Industries emerged as the standout performer, surging 3.73%. Cipla followed with a strong 3.02% gain, while TVS Motor climbed 1.58%, supported by favorable momentum in their respective sectors. On the other hand, some heavyweights exerted pressure on the upside—Dabur slipped 3.61%, Bosch Limited declined 1.15%, and Indigo fell 0.92%. Globally, optimism was reinforced as softer-than-expected U.S. inflation data rekindled expectations of a September rate cut by the Federal Reserve. On the domestic front, retail inflation cooling to an eight-year low of 1.55% further bolstered confidence. Together, these macro positives underpinned buying interest, helping the Nifty maintain stability above the 24,600 mark despite selective sectoral divergences. Nifty Technical Analysis – Daily & Hourly The Nifty 50 ended the session on 21st August 2025 consolidating just above the 25,000 mark, reflecting indecision after the recent upmove. While the index managed to hold its ground, the technical and derivatives data suggest a mixed setup heading into the next session. From a technical perspective, the index continues to trade above its short-term moving averages, with the 20-DMA at 24,740 and 40-DEMA at 24,861 providing a cushion on the downside. On the daily timeframe, the RSI stands at 57, indicating steady momentum, while the MACD has narrowed to –22, showing that bearish pressure is gradually fading but not yet fully reversed. On the hourly chart, the 20-HMA at 25,041 is positioned above the 40-HEMA at 24,923, confirming a bullish crossover that continues to support intraday strength. The hourly RSI at 62 remains in the positive territory, while the MACD is strongly positive at +78, reinforcing near-term bullish momentum. On the derivatives front, the positioning presents a slightly more nuanced picture. The overall Put OI stands higher at 16.70 crore versus Call OI of 15.82 crore, giving the broader trend a bullish skew. However, the day's change data tilts bearish—total Put OI declined by 1.52 crore while Call OI rose by 2.30 crore, resulting in a negative OI differential of 3.82 crore. This indicates some profit-taking by put writers and fresh call additions at higher strikes. The maximum Call OI and the highest change are concentrated at the 25,100 strike, marking this level as the immediate resistance. On the Put side, the maximum OI is parked at 25,050, with fresh activity also seen at 25,100, indicating that both bulls and bears are converging around this zone. In summary, while the close above 25,000 keeps the structure constructive, the heavy OI build-up at 25,100 could act as a short-term ceiling unless decisively crossed. Sustaining above 25,100 remains the key trigger for a potential short-covering rally towards 25,300–25,500. On the downside, the 24,740–24,860 zone—aligned with the 20-DMA and 40-DEMA—remains the critical support area. A break below this could weaken momentum. With daily indicators turning constructive, hourly charts holding bullish momentum, and OI showing signs of a tussle at 25,100, the market is likely to witness a range-bound yet eventful session, where a decisive breakout could dictate the next leg of the rally.
