CAF to Unveil New Women's AFCON Trophy
In a statement, CAF confirmed the launch event will be streamed live across its official Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) accounts from midday. A promotional ceremony, in partnership with the tournament's main sponsor, will follow later in the evening.
The initiative forms part of CAF president Patrice Motsepe's wider strategy to elevate the status of women's football across the continent, both in terms of marketing and symbolism.
The 2025 Women's AFCON kicks off this Saturday, July 5, at the new Olympic Stadium in Rabat, with hosts Morocco facing Zambia in the opening fixture of Group A.
Head coach Jorge Vilda has announced his final 26-player squad, with a blend of local talent and overseas experience. Captain Ghizlane Chebbak (Levante), goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi, and forward Fatima Tagnaout (both AS FAR) lead the charge.
Vilda, who famously led Spain to World Cup glory in 2023, has been full of praise for his squad. 'The players arrive totally committed. They make things easy,' he told CAFOnline. 'We've worked hard, and we're ready.'
His side warmed up with wins over Cape Verde (1-0) and Malawi (4-1), and will now face Zambia, Senegal, and DR Congo in what Vilda reckons is the tournament's toughest group.
'Zambia have improved a lot. We've met them before. They're no pushovers,' he said. 'But hosting is not a pressure. It's a privilege.'
The message to fans? 'We won't disappoint. These players will fight for everything, every ball, every moment.'
Twelve teams are in the running for the Women's AFCON this year, split across three groups. Group B sees Nigeria take on Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana. In Group C, it's South Africa, Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania. Tags: MoroccoWomen's AFCON

Houcine Ammouta Parts Ways with Al Jazira
Al Jazira have confirmed the departure of head coach Houcine Ammouta following the club's defeat to Khorfakkan. The Emirati side announced the termination of his contract this week, thanking Ammouta and his backroom staff for their work and wishing them success in the future. The loss to Khorfakkan, in which Moroccan forward Tarik Tissoudali scored once and provided two assists, appears to have been a decisive factor. Ammouta joined Al Jazira in the summer of 2024 on a two-year deal, aiming to restore the club to the top of Emirati football. His spell, however, ends less than a year later. The 55-year-old has enjoyed a notable coaching career. With Jordan, he guided the national team to their first AFC Asian Cup final in 2023 and helped them top their World Cup qualifying group, laying the groundwork for the 2026 qualifiers and the 2027 Asian Cup. His approach, based on possession, high pressing and quick transitions, proved highly effective, bringing the best out of players such as Musa Al-Tamari and Yazan Al-Naimat. He stepped down from the Jordan post in June 2024 for personal reasons. His successor, Jamal Sellami, later led the side to their first World Cup qualification, building on the foundations Ammouta left behind. Tags: Al JaziraAmmoutaUAE

Morocco Fined for Player Misconduct at CHAN 2024
The CAF Disciplinary Committee has handed out sanctions to three nations, including Morocco, during the ongoing CHAN TotalEnergies 2024 tournament. Morocco's Royal Football Federation (FRMF) was fined $5,000, with $2,500 suspended, after the committee found 'inappropriate behaviour by its players' in the match against Kenya. The suspension is conditional on 'no similar offence is committed until the end of CHAN 2024.' Kenya's Football Kenya Federation (FKF) was fined $50,000 for 'several security breaches' during their game against Morocco at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani. CAF warned that 'any persistent failure to meet CAF security requirements could lead to the relocation of the national team's matches to another stadium.' Kenya has been instructed to deploy sufficient security personnel and respect road closures on match days. Zambia's Football Association (FAZ) was fined $5,000 after being found 'guilty of violating the CAF Media Regulations' by failing to present their head coach at the mandatory press conference before their opening match against the Democratic Republic of Congo. The measures underline CAF's ongoing enforcement of player conduct, security, and media regulations as CHAN 2024 progresses. All fines must be paid within 60 days of notification. CAF Denounces Security Breaches During Kenya-Morocco CHAN 2024 Match
Marrakech – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed serious concerns about security failures at Kasarani Stadium during Kenya's matches in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), particularly following incidents that occurred during the Kenya-Morocco fixture on Sunday. In an official letter addressed to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) in Kenya, CAF condemned the persistent security breaches observed during matches involving the Kenyan national team. The continental governing body specifically referenced serious incidents that took place during the Kenya-Morocco match played on Sunday. Morocco began their quest for a third CHAN title with a solid 2-0 victory over Angola in the Group A opener at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on August 3. However, their momentum was halted by the defeat to Kenya a week later. Among the reported incidents were a broken access door, spectators entering without tickets, attendance exceeding the stadium's regulatory capacity of 48,000, and unauthorized entry into areas reserved for media. CAF has referred these security failures to the appropriate authorities for investigation and appropriate measures. The organization has also initiated discussions with the LOC and the Kenyan government to ensure strict compliance with CAF regulations, particularly those related to security protocols. The match, which Kenya won 1-0, took place in a tense atmosphere, raising questions about security management throughout the competition. Kasarani Stadium, where these events occurred, is scheduled to host the tournament final on August 30 in a competition co-organized by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. On the sporting front, Morocco suffered its first defeat in the tournament against host nation Kenya. The Atlas Lions now find themselves obligated to win their next two matches to qualify for the second round, starting with their upcoming fixture against Zambia on Thursday. Despite entering the tournament as favorites, coach Tarik Sektioui's team struggled to convert their technical superiority into goals. After a promising start in the first fifteen minutes, Morocco's momentum was disrupted when striker Ayoub Mouloua sustained an injury that forced his substitution. Kenya's Rayan Ogam capitalized on a defensive lapse to score with a powerful, well-placed shot in the 42nd minute, giving the home side the advantage. Kenya played most of the second half with ten men following Christine Erambo's logical expulsion for a bad foul just before halftime. Despite the numerical advantage and substitutions that reinvigorated their attack, Morocco failed to equalize. Saber Bougrine and Youssef Mehri provided fresh energy, but the Atlas Lions lacked precision in the final third. The Moroccan team will need to quickly regroup to avoid an early exit from the competition.
