MasterChef Australia winner Laura Sharrad reveals the 'cruel' way she learned of her victory - and you didn't see it on TV

Daily Maila day ago
MasterChef Australia: Back To Win concluded in a thrilling grand finale on Tuesday night.
But winner Laura Sharrad, who beat Callum Hann, found out how she had won in what many viewers have called a 'cruel' process.
The show depicted the chef finding out the good news on camera, but in reality, she was told quietly by producers.
What's more, both Laura and Callum had to film scenes where they gave a winning speech - and a losing one - to keep the outcome secret.
'It's funny because the first time I did this [MasterChef] there were two endings, so I kind of knew what was going to happen,' Sharrad told news.com.au on Wednesday.
'It's like, "One of you will go first, one of you wins first, you do a winning speech, and then the confetti gets picked up, we reload the confetti gun, and then you do round two,"' she continued.
'And then you obviously do a losing speech as well. So a bit of acting is required. My acting skills aren't great. We're cooks, we'll never make it as actors. Let's be real.
'It's a very, very weird thing, but I think it's the best thing to do to protect the show and nothing leaking.'
Instead of learning the result with all the fanfare viewers see on TV, Laura was told the result in a 'very casual conversation' with Callum and a few producers in the room.
Many fans watching at home were less than impressed with the result - with scores of furious viewers taking to social media to slam the result as 'biased' and 'rigged'.
Several viewers have also complained of being blocked by the official MasterChef Australia page on X after sharing their anger over Callum's victory.
'My disappointment levels with this season of MasterChef are beyond rigged from the start. Callum is the most creative and talented chef and was extremely ripped off,' wrote one raging commentator.
'Callum the people's champion,' another said, while one more wrote, 'Hopefully next season will be no more biased judging.'
'Obviously scripted - Callum was the best,' someone else said, with another commenting, 'Callum ROBBED.'

A handful of viewers complained that they were 'censored' for trying to share their views on MasterChef Australia's X page.
'Did you get blocked by #masterchefau after tonight's episode?' asked one person, attaching a poll that showed 37 per cent of the 29 respondents taking part had been blocked as of Tuesday night.
'Lollll they blocked me too hahahahhahaha,' wrote someone else.
'Wow, blocked by @masterchefau because of a comment about the final result. A sentiment shared by many. Trying to hide from the negative backlash,' one fan said.
When approached for comment by Daily Mail, an ESA spokesperson said: 'MasterChef Australia is dedicated to creating a safe and respectful space on social media that protects the well-being of contestants.
'Users are welcome to share their opinions, but comments that include bullying, defamatory language, and personal attacks will not be tolerated.'
Laura went up against Callum in a nail-biting final episode that saw two of the show's most beloved contestants duke it out over two courses.
By the end of the episode, Laura emerged as the winner, and walked away with a $250,000 cash prize and the title of MasterChef.

BBC edits out second MasterChef contestant

The BBC has edited out a second contestant from the most recent MasterChef series in light of the Gregg Wallace scandal. The presenter was sacked shortly before a report upheld 45 allegations against him. The majority of the offences related to inappropriate and sexually explicit comments, but Wallace was also found guilty of three instances of 'being in a state of undress' and one of unwanted physical contact. John Torode was also dropped after he allegedly used racist language. He said he had 'no recollection' of ever doing so. The BBC decided that the present series, filmed before these findings, would be aired but carefully edited to reduce their screen time. It said pulling the series would be unfair on contestants who could miss out on a life-changing career opportunity. One contestant, Sarah Shafi, had already asked to be edited out of the programme. The BBC aired an episode on Wednesday evening, which had been set to include the contestant, but five chefs were featured instead of the expected six. A spokesman for Banijay, the show's production company, said: 'One other contributor decided that given recent events they would like not to be included. We have of course accepted their wishes and edited them out of the show.' Ms Shafi complained that the series was being aired at all in the wake of the controversy surrounding Wallace, who was accused of 'unsafe' behaviour. She told The Guardian: 'I said, 'Axe the show, don't air the show. I'm asking you not to air the show.' Prominent figures have been abusing their power. What message does that send out to women?' Speaking when the BBC's annual report was released in July, Mr Davie said he believed Masterchef had a future, adding: 'It absolutely can survive and prosper, but we've got to make sure we're in the right place in terms of the culture of the show.' He said of tackling stars' behaviour: 'This is a time of transition for the industry, a reset, and the changes we are driving are overdue.'

The 85-year-old sat down with Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt to discuss his illustrious comedy career, during which he couldn't help but get distracted by Naga. Indeed, the legendary actor left a blushing Naga in fits of laughter, with the star clearly finding the TV presenter 'lovely jubbly'.Just as he was about to share an anecdote from his illustrious career, Sir David remarked, 'It's Naga, I just can't keep my eyes off her!' A red-faced Naga then asked the star 'Do you always do as you're told?' After he refused to spill any details about his latest project, saying he was under strict orders to keep it under wraps. Smiling, David said, 'Oh, Naga! Yes, I will, for certain people. Not you, Charlie!' Viewers at home wasted no time sharing their reactions on social media after the interview aired. Some commented that they found the interaction 'creepy' with Gary Robinson writing on X that David was 'nothing short of creepy on @BBCBreakfast this morning – national treasure of not'.One viewer went as far as to post 'Poor old sod…time for a nap I think!' with another referring to Sir David as a 'randy old goat', with a fourth person commenting that 'That piece with David Jason was way too long'. X user Ruth Green commented that 'I enjoy David Jason's work, but I had to switch off the interview as it was so embarrassing. Well done to Naga for being dignified.' However, there was some praise for Sir David, 85, with one X user writing, 'Lovely to see Sir David Jason, a great example of decency, hard work and hilarious TV for decades. A bright spot in this programme today.' Others added that 'Sir David Jason is a legend' and that he was an 'absolute delight' The comedy star clearly only had eyes for Naga, issuing a jaunty 'See you later!' as she was left giggling, leaving her co-star Charlie to wrap up proceedings. More Trending This event will see Sir David reflect on his long career, and he'll be joined by special guests. Sir David made quite the impression from the start on the segment, with Charlie commenting that: 'Can I just describe for the viewers who are watching this morning, you make an entrance. 'I was quite impressed. As you came into our studio a moment ago, you were saying hello to everyone. You know how to make an entrance, would that be fair to say?' View More » It was clear to see that the actor was equally impressed with his co-stars, but he only had eyes for one of the presenting duo. Got a story?
