Ambitious Chippa United on a shopping spree; new coach and sporting director

IOL Newsa day ago

Siviwe 'Chippa' Mpengesi Siviwe 'Chippa' Mpengesi has been on a shopping spree. The Eastern Cape-based club has appointed a new head coach and a sporting director.
Chippa United has announced the appointment of Sinethemba Badela as their new head coach.
The club expressed confidence in his abilities as he takes over from Thabo September, who parted ways with Chippa following an underwhelming 11th-place finish last season.
Badela, who hails from the Eastern Cape, steps into the leadership role as a promising emerging coaching talent in South African football. He is a former Mamelodi Sundowns DStv Diski Challenge mentor and has an eye for untapped talent.
'This appointment at Chippa United marks his first appointment as a head coach in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). It is a moment of pride not just for him, but for us as a club,' Chippa United's statement read.
'We strive to be more than a club. We are a symbol of possibility, a beacon for talent, and a footballing home for the Pride of the Eastern Cape.'
Last season, he gained invaluable experience as an assistant coach to Rhulani Mokwena at Wydad AC in Morocco.
Badela's appointment is a significant step in Chippa's ambitions to move away from their mid-table mediocrity. Previously, he also played a key role in Mokwena's technical team at Mamelodi Sundowns.
'Coach Badela brings with him international experience, having served as assistant coach at Wydad AC,' the statement continued. 'He now steps into this leadership role with the backing of our club, our supporters, and the province we proudly represent.'
Badela's task will centre around elevating the club's fortunes after a lacklustre season where they amassed 31 points from 28 matches, narrowly missing out on a coveted top-eight spot.
While the details of Badela's contract have yet to be revealed, the club's vision of fostering talent is clear. Chippa United's commitment is underscored by their choice to promote local coaching talent. 'His journey is a testament to what is possible when potential meets opportunity. We are honoured to give him the platform to lead our club at the highest level.'
As preparations for the new season intensify, Chippa United's supporters will be keenly watching to see how coach Badela implements his tactical philosophy and galvanises the squad to achieve their goals.
Additional members of the technical team supporting Badela are expected to be announced soon, as the club looks to build momentum and restore pride among its fans.
Meanwhile, Chippa's owner, Siviwe Mpengesi, on Thursday morning announced the appointment of Sinesipho Mali as the club's new Sporting Director.
Mali, a distinguished tactical analyst for South Africa's national football team, Bafana Bafana, boasts a wealth of knowledge in performance analysis, having previously served in key roles at Chippa and Sekhukhune United. His return to the club marks a notable chapter in his career, underlining the commitment of Mpengesi to revitalise Chippa.
Mali brings a unique blend of academic knowledge and practical skills earned during his tenure as an analyst with Kaizer Chiefs before his recent role at Sekhukhune United, where he not only functioned as an analyst but also took charge of recruitment strategies. His efforts at Sekhukhune were instrumental in the club achieving its highest points tally in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.
'With Mali's return, we are investing in leadership that understands the game and also the unique context of our region – ensuring alignment across recruitment, development, and performance, while driving purpose-led progress for the club and province," Chippa's statement read.
Mali will continue to serve as the head of analysis for Bafana Bafana. He also has previous experience with Banyana Banyana and the national Under-23 squad.

'Pitso should work with Ncikazi'

Orlando Pirates legend Thabo Mngomeni has backed Pitso Mosimane to join the Buccaneers as head coach. The Buccaneers recently parted ways with Jose Riveiro after three years. The Spaniard opted not to renew his contract and instead joined Egyptian giants Al Ahly. Mngomeni, who played for Orlando Pirates between 1998 and 2002, said Pitso Mosimane was the right coach to replace Riveiro. 'I was happy when they were saying Pitso was coming,' said the former Bafana Bafana midfielder as per iDiski Times , 'I was really happy. I think he could do something or carry on what Riveiro started. Definitely, Pitso has got the capability of doing that, sure, definitely,' he added. With Ncikazi having been at Pirates for half a decade, Mngomeni feels the former Golden Arrows could help Mosimane. 'And what about Mandla [Ncikazi]? He has been there with Riveiro. Mandla has identified how Riveiro was doing his things.' 'I'm not saying if they put him in, he should do it that way, but he can see where they have improved. He can see where they need to improve. He should also be there, part of the team,' he concluded. Pitso Mosimane has been a free agent since leaving Iran earlier this year and is one of the favourites for the Orlando Pirates coaching job. Rassie to pick mix and match Bok team for season opener against Barbarians

A number of players who've yet to turn out for the Springboks could feature in the non-Test in Cape Town at the end of June. Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse are expected to be two of the experienced Springbok players in action against the Barbarians in Cape Town at the end of the month. Picture: Steve Haag/Gallo Images The Springboks are set to name a mixed team of experience and youth for their opening match of the international season against the Barbarians in Cape Town at the end of the month. Similar to last year, when the Boks started their season with a game against Wales outside of the international window, they will be missing a number of players due to them arriving late from their franchises overseas. The experienced Japan-based Boks are expected to feature prominently, while a number of inexperienced players will also be in line to get some valuable game time. Bok coach Rassie Erasmus explained that they were hoping to get the balance right, of enough experience to help them win the game, while blooding others who ordinarily wouldn't be first choice. 'We want to start our season on the right foot, but we won't have all of our players. Besides the Bulls (players in the URC final), we have quite a long list of walking wounded that we want to have ready for the Italy series,' explained Erasmus. 'The Barbarians game is a good opportunity to use our guys from Japan … the likes of Jesse Kriel, Faf de Klerk, Damian de Allende, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Cheslin Kolbe and Malcolm Marx, because they have not had a lot of rugby for a while. 'It is not a Test match, but we also have to make sure the team is good enough. We don't want a hiding in our first game.' Focus on own game Erasmus has coached the BaaBaas before and admits that they are a tough side to prepare for, so the Boks will be focusing more on their own game, than on what the invitational side will bring. 'I've coached the Barbarians and a lot of our players have played for them. Their setup is 'shackles off' and to play attacking rugby without worrying about the consequences,' said Erasmus. 'They get together on a Sunday (before a game), so there's not a lot of analysis we can do on them, so I guess we'll focus a lot on ourselves for that game.' The uncapped players in the current Bok training squad who could be in line to play include Marnus van der Merwe, Neethling Fouche, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Cobus Wiese, Renzo du Plessis, Vincent Tshituka and Ethan Hooker. However, if any of them do feature it won't be considered their Springbok debut as the match against the Barbarians isn't an official Test match. Surprise squad pick, UCT's Ntokozo Makhaza, who was named Varsity Cup player of the tournament, but has yet to play a professional game, has impressed Erasmus in training, but the coach admits he isn't yet ready for the step up to international rugby, although could be sooner rather than later.

Kaizer Chiefs news: Zwane, Mthethwa, Nabi, R20 million

Kaizer Chiefs are hoping to sign the type of firepower that will propel them to title-chasing status. It's been a sorry era for the Soweto giants, who have finished out of the top ten in the last two successive seasons. However, they did manage to end their ten-year trophy drought after lifting the Nedbank Cup in May. Head coach Nasreddine Nabi has given Kaizer Chiefs an ultimatum: cough up the finances to sign stars, or he'll walk away. 'I wouldn't be honest if say that I'm going to stay if the club doesn't allow me to get all the tools to succeed next season because they have promised, and myself, I have promised the fans that I want to build a successful team that will compete in every competition to win trophies,' Nabi said. 'That's the condition for me to stay [at Chiefs] because I don't feel that I want to go through what I went through this season.' Regarding long-term target Fiston Mayele, the Glamour Boys are said to be R20 million short, dampening their chances of signing the in-from striker. Meanwhile, there's growing speculation that the club is open to loaning youngster Samkelo Zwane next season as Kaizer Chiefs continue to hunt additional midfielders; however, they are keen on keeping Sibongiseni Mthethwa having offered him a two-year contract extension. 'The club has already taken the initiative to keep the midfielder for two more years,' an inside source revealed. 'The talks are believed to have started before the end of the season. But apparently things are looking good. It will all now depend on what both parties are looking at. But the talks are open.' Another source reaffirmed the speculation, saying, 'Yes, he didn't start well under coach Nasreddine Nabi. We think he didn't understand him. But now they are happy with him and that's why they are offering him a two-year deal.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
