Libya has reaffirmed its support for Palestine's full membership in the International Labour Organization (ILO), according to a statement delivered by Labour and Rehabilitation Minister Eng. Ali Al-Abed during the 113th International Labour Conference in Geneva.
In his address to the global assembly, the minister condemned the forced displacement and ongoing violations faced by the Palestinian people. He urged the international community to uphold the labour and human rights of Palestinians, reaffirming Libya's solidarity with their cause.
Al-Abed highlighted Libya's commitment to social justice and democratic values, stating that the country prioritises the protection of workers' rights and dignity. He emphasised ongoing efforts to improve workplace safety and enhance the overall working environment.
The minister praised the ILO for its continued efforts in defending labour rights globally. He also presented Libya's 'Wafid' initiative, which aims to regulate the status of foreign workers and expand inclusivity within the national labour market. The initiative reflects the government's strategy to manage labour more effectively and ensure rights protection in line with international standards.
Additionally, Al-Abed touched on Libya's steps to align its national legislation with international conventions, particularly in areas concerning forced labour and human trafficking. He reiterated Libya's rejection of all forms of forced work and exploitation.

Gaza Aid Convoy Crosses into Libya from Tunisia

A large solidarity convoy dubbed the 'Caravan of Steadfastness' entered Libya on Tuesday morning via the Ras Ajdir border crossing from Tunisia, continuing its journey toward the Gaza Strip through Egypt's Rafah crossing. The convoy, which comprises around 1,000 volunteers, made its way through the Libyan cities of Zuwara, Zaltan, Sabratha, and Zawiya before heading to Tripoli. It aims to break the Israeli blockade on Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians enduring what organisers describe as a 'genocidal war' since 7 October 2023. Videos shared by the Zawiya Municipality on Facebook showed official and popular preparations for welcoming the convoy, while several Libyan social media pages posted images of citizens waving Libyan and Palestinian flags and distributing food to participants. According to Tunisia's Joint Action Coordination for Palestine, the convoy includes trade unionists, politicians, human rights advocates, lawyers, doctors, journalists, and youth activists. The group published the caravan's schedule, including departure points from Tunis and other major Tunisian cities, as well as coordination points for crossing into Libya. The convoy marks a high-profile show of Maghreb solidarity with the Palestinian cause, with participants hailing from Tunisia and across North Africa. On 31 May, caravan spokesperson Wael Nawar announced that thousands from Tunisia and other Maghreb countries had joined the effort. The initiative is part of growing regional grassroots pressure calling for an end to the war on Gaza and increased humanitarian support. Organisers said the volunteers aim to accompany the aid all the way to Gaza, pending approval to pass through Rafah. The convoy's symbolic and material support underscores continued North African mobilisation in favour of the Palestinian people, particularly amid intensified violence and deepening humanitarian crises in the besieged enclave.

Libyan Activist Launches Open Sit-In & General Work Suspension

Libyan civil activist Abdulmonem Al-Muraimi has declared that a nationwide civil disobedience campaign will officially begin next Tuesday, calling for a suspension of all work and public activity. In a post on his official Facebook page, Al-Muraimi announced an open-ended sit-in and the halt of operations in all government departments, institutions, and educational facilities, including universities and higher institutes. He also launched a hashtag to mobilize support under the title: (Prepare for Civil Disobedience). 'Civil disobedience will officially begin next Tuesday, with the suspension of all work in departments and institutions, and the halting of studies in universities and higher institutes,' he wrote. The announcement comes amid growing public frustration with the political deadlock, deteriorating services, and a lack of accountability in governance. Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations. Libya's economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya's economy. The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions. The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition. Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges. Tags: Civil DisobediencelibyaProteststripoli
