Cathie Wood Is Buying This Top E-Commerce Stock That's Down 36%, and She Won't Stop Selling Palantir.
Following money manager Cathie Wood's stock trades can be an entertaining activity for the individual investor, and it can also provide some inspiration. She seeks out disruptive technology stocks for her firm, Ark Invest, which manages multiple exchange-traded funds (ETF). While her risk appetite might be above many investors', some of her funds have outperformed the market recently, and she was an early bull for many of today's top tech stocks.
Her flagship fund, the Ark Innovation ETF, has lagged the S&P 500 by a wide margin in the past five years. It's flat in that period, while the index is up 106%. But Wood is focused on the long term and her stocks' ability to transform the world and generate shareholder value.

For weeks, she's been piling into e-commerce giant Shopify (NASDAQ: SHOP) while reducing her position in artificial intelligence (AI) company Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR). Let's see if such a strategy can make sense for you, too.
Shopify: The other e-commerce giant
Amazon has a firm hold on U.S. e-commerce with about 40% of the total market. Everyone else pales in comparison unless you compare apples to oranges, or Amazon to Shopify. That's because Shopify is an e-commerce platform, and it doesn't generate revenue directly from selling products online. Instead, it serves merchants and makes money by providing them with service subscriptions and payment processing. That said, its gross merchandise volume (GMV) is quite similar to Amazon's core e-commerce sales -- $75 billion in the first quarter versus $75 billion from Amazon's online/physical stores and subscription services. As the largest e-commerce software platform in the U.S., it's processing a large percentage of domestic e-commerce activity.
There have been ups and downs over the past few years as the company goes through growing pains, and that journey has led to volatility for the stock. Today, it's in an excellent place, reporting strong growth and increasing profitability. For Q1, revenue increased 27% year over year, and operating income more than doubled. Free cash flow increased 56% with a 15% margin, up from 12% in the year-ago period.
Shopify has multiple growth drivers, and it's leveraging its top position to harness new opportunities. It has expanded its platform offerings to appeal to a broad swathe of clients, from small businesses to enterprise customers. It's also making a bigger push abroad -- international revenue was only 30% of the total last quarter, giving it a large growth runway.
Shopify stock is still down 36% from the all-time high it reached during the pandemic. Its valuation has come down as a result, but I wouldn't call it a bargain given its price-to-free-cash-flow ratio of 80 and a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 60. This could still be an attractive entry point for long-term investors who can handle some risk.
Palantir: Incredible performance, high price tag
The market has become infatuated with Palantir stock and for good reason. The data analytics company is growing at breakneck speed and enjoying robust profitability. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has boosted its capabilities and prospects, and it's become the poster child for the supercharged AI stock.
Palantir offers two platforms with similar services but geared toward separate markets. Gotham targets the government and defense industries, and Foundry targets commercial industries. Both platforms help organizations and businesses organize and analyze massive data sets to make informed decisions and take quick action. Its services can streamline and sort data for large-language models (LLMs) to make generative AI much simpler for developers, which is why generative AI has emerged as a key growth driver.
In Q1, revenue increased 39% year over year, driven by the U.S. commercial segment, which grew 71%. It closed 139 deals of at least $1 million, 51 deals of at least $5 million, and 31 deals of at least $10 million during the quarter. Total contract value increased 182% to $810 million for the quarter. This forward-looking number represents the potential lifetime value of contracts signed in a certain period.
As a service-based system that's fast-growing, its margins are extremely strong. Operating margin was 20% in Q1, and adjusted operating margin, which excludes stock-based compensation, was 44%. Net income margin was 24%.
With so much going right for Palantir, there's only one thing eroding the stock's investment thesis: its extremely expensive valuation. It trades at a forward P/E ratio of 175 and a price-to-free-cash-flow ratio of 241. Both figures are way above their recent averages.
Cathie Wood isn't one to be scared off by a high valuation, but even she seems to recognize that Palantir stock is priced for perfection. The company may sustain its strong growth for quite some time, and it may have new products to launch that will expand its market opportunity. Even so, such tailwinds may not be enough to carry this valuation long term. At these levels, investors should carefully assess their risk appetite and conviction before jumping in. Existing shareholders should consider the possibility that going forward, they might find greater returns elsewhere.

Jobs Minister presses Canada Post, union to reach a deal
Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu is calling on Canada Post and the union representing 55,000 postal workers to return to the bargaining table and hash out terms for binding arbitration. In a social media statement Wednesday, the minister also asked the Crown corporation and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers to continue to work toward a deal outside of that process. She says arbitration is 'not the preferred path,' but suggested the stage would be set for an imposed settlement if the two sides could not find common ground themselves. 'Canadians expect the parties to resolve this dispute one way or another. To do that they must meet and pursue these two paths with urgency,' Hajdu said on X, formerly known as Twitter. Federal mediators are standing by to help, she added. Canada Post asks Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu to force union vote on 'final offers' Canada Post workers rally in 13 cities to raise awareness of labour dispute On Friday, Canada Post asked the minister to force a union vote on its 'final offers,' while the union requested binding arbitration, which the employer rejected. The union said Tuesday that a forced vote on a new contract would amount to a 'government attack on our rights to free collective bargaining.' It also said it had been given a Wednesday deadline to respond to the latest offers, which include an end to compulsory overtime and a signing bonus of up to $1,000, among other concessions. But the employer stuck to its proposal for a 14 per cent cumulative wage hike over four years, a 'dynamic routing' pilot that could see mail carriers' routes change daily in response to parcel volume, and part-time staff on weekend shifts – a major sticking point in the talks. Canada Post has warned that arbitration would be 'long and complicated' and would likely last more than a year, adding to its significant financial challenges. The Crown corporation said last week it logged nearly $1.3-billion in operating losses last year, raising further questions about its business model as letter volumes plunge and fears of a second disruption in six months persist. The union again adopted a legal strike position starting May 23, but it has opted instead to ban members from working overtime while negotiations continued. The 32-day work stoppage in November and December halted millions of letters and packages in the peak shipping season ahead of the winter holidays last year. Shippers fled Canada Post in droves when workers went on strike Nov. 15. Rather than be caught flat-footed a second time, plenty of e-commerce companies have played it safe by booking with other couriers. Canada Post says parcel volumes are down 65 per cent from the same time last year due to uncertainty over the contract negotiations.

How Walmart's Physical Stores Are Powering Its Digital Expansion
Walmart's WMT success continues to be powered by its strong omnichannel strategy, which blends physical stores with digital shopping. The company is constantly improving how it serves customers by using data, investing in technology and making in-store operations more efficient. Because most Americans live close to a Walmart, the company can use its stores to quickly fulfill online orders. It has taken many steps to improve its e-commerce business, such as buying other companies, forming partnerships and upgrading its delivery and payment systems. In the first quarter of fiscal 2026, Walmart's global e-commerce sales grew by 22%, thanks to more customers using online shopping across all its divisions. In the United States, e-commerce sales rose 21%, driven by fast store-fulfilled pickup and delivery, strong marketplace sales and growth in advertising. More customers are choosing faster delivery options for convenience. International e-commerce sales increased 20%, also supported by store-based pickup and delivery and growing marketplace demand. At Sam's Club U.S., e-commerce sales jumped 27%, with major gains in Club-fulfilled deliveries and pickup services. Walmart is also building out its supply chain and expanding key digital businesses like Walmart GoLocal (last-mile delivery), Walmart Connect (advertising), Walmart Luminate (data insights), Walmart+ (membership program) and Walmart Fulfillment Services (helping sellers deliver products). It has made smart investments such as acquiring a large stake in Flipkart, a leading e-commerce platform in India, and owning most of PhonePe, a digital payments company. Walmart has also been growing quickly in online grocery shopping, which remains a major driver of its digital success. Key Competitors Challenging WMT in E-Commerce Amazon AMZN is the top player in online shopping, thanks to its huge product range, fast delivery and strong marketplace with many third-party sellers. Its strategy focuses on speed, convenience and keeping customers loyal through Prime, which offers free shipping and other perks. Amazon keeps investing in better technology, AI and faster fulfillment. Recently, its online sales have grown again after a slower period. However, Walmart is catching up by using its many stores to quickly deliver online orders, especially in groceries, where it has a clear advantage. The race between Amazon and Walmart is getting closer. Target's TGT e-commerce business is growing fast because of its focus on making shopping easy and quick. They offer services like same-day delivery and curbside pickup, using their stores to help fulfill online orders. This has helped Target's online sales grow a lot. In the first quarter of 2025, Target's e-commerce operations contributed approximately 20% to the company's total revenues. Target relies on its unique brand and loyal shoppers to compete with Walmart's size and low prices. WMT's Price Performance, Valuation, and Estimates Shares of Walmart have gained around 10.6% year to date compared with the industry 's growth of 10.8%. From a valuation standpoint, WMT trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 37.08X, significantly above the industry's average of 33.95X. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research The Zacks Consensus Estimate for WMT's 2025 earnings implies year-over-year growth of 3.2%, whereas its 2026 earnings estimate suggests a year-over-year uptick of 11.6%.
