World champions Springboks to play Japan at Wembley

Kuwait Timesa day ago
JOHANNESBURG: World champions South Africa will play Japan at Wembley on November 1 the first time they have met in England since the Japanese recorded one of the greatest upsets in Rugby World Cup history in 2015.
Japan, then as now coached by Eddie Jones, overcame the Springboks 34-32 in an absolute thriller of a match in Brighton. South Africa have gone on to beat the 'Brave Blossoms' twice since then, both times in Japan, as well as being crowned world champions in 2019 and 2023 giving them a record four victories in the sport's quadrennial showpiece.
Jones, who in between his stints as Japan handler had a rollercoaster spell with England losing to the 'Boks in the 2019 World Cup final but was fired in late 2022, said the 'Miracle of Brighton' had been a game changer for the sport. 'The game in Brighton 10 years ago changed rugby in Japan from being a minor sport to a boom sport,' said Jones.
'Playing against the Boks is the dream of every young Japanese player.' His Springbok counterpart Rassie Erasmus said it was a most welcome challenge ahead of their traditional November clashes with northern hemisphere heavyweights. 'We are delighted to be starting off our tour of the Northern Hemisphere with a match against Japan at the iconic Wembley Stadium,' said Erasmus in a South Africa Rugby statement.
'Especially ahead of a challenging tour which kicks off a week later with the first official Test of the November window against France in Paris. 'The Brave Blossoms are renowned for playing fast, attacking, high-tempo rugby - which has been prevalent in our last two encounters, before and during the Rugby World Cup in Japan in 2019.'
Wembley has hosted 11 rugby matches over the years, starting with England's 26-13 win over Canada in 1992. Wales hosted six games there, including their Five Nations matches in 1998 and 1999, while the old Cardiff Arms Park was being rebuilt.
A revamped Wembley also featured a couple of games during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, though both lacked the drama of the Japan and Boks pool match. The last time the Boks played at Wembley was a 31-31 against the Barbarians draw in 2016. Erasmus' side will have already played in England ahead of the Japan match, as they face Argentina in the final round of the Rugby Championship at Twickenham on October 4. – AFP

England unchanged for Women's Rugby WCup opener against USA

LONDON: England coach John Mitchell has named an unchanged team from their final warm-up game for the Women's Rugby World Cup opener against the United States in Sunderland on Friday. The starting 15 overwhelmed France 40-6 in the second of England's two warm-up fixtures earlier this month. Zoe Aldcroft continues to captain the team from blindside flanker, with No 8 Alex Matthews and openside Sadia Kabeya alongside her in the back row and Abbie Ward and Morwenna Talling the starting locks. The pack is completed by a powerful front row of Hannah Botterman, Amy Cokayne and Maud Muir. Behind the scrum, half-backs Natasha Hunt and Zoe Harrison will look to dictate play, with Meg Jones and Tatyana Heard in the centres. Scrum-half Hunt will be making her first World Cup appearance since 2017 after being left out of the England squad at the last tournament. Jess Breach and Abby Dow line-up on the wings, with full-back Ellie Kildunne, the reigning women's World Rugby player of the year, looking to add to an exceptional tally of 41 tries in 53 Tests a member of a dynamic back three. Tournament debutants Kelsey Clifford, Maddie Feaunati and Emma Sing are named as replacements, with veteran Emily Scarratt poised to win her 119th cap off the bench. But there is no place in the matchday 23 for former captain Marlie Packer. 'Embrace the occasion' Sunderland is best known as a football rather than rugby hotbed, with the Stadium of Light, the venue for Friday's match, home to the northeast city's Premier League team. But with officials keen to showcase the national appeal of the Red Roses, their pool matches are being spread round England rather than just taken to traditional rugby heartlands. And with 40,000 tickets sold, Friday's fixture will be played in front of a record crowd for an opening game of a Women's Rugby World Cup. 'We have been building nicely into the tournament and now we're excited to get our campaign under way,' Mitchell said as he announced his team on Wednesday. 'Sunderland have been a great host city thus far and we know it'll be a record crowd for a Women's Rugby World Cup opening match which shows the appetite for rugby in this region and for the competition ahead.' The New Zealander added: 'We want to embrace the occasion whilst understanding we have to remain where our feet are and earn the right to progress through the pool stage.' Host nation England head into the event as favourites, having lost only once in their past 58 matches - a defeat by New Zealand in the Covid-delayed 2022 World Cup final. In spite of winning six successive Six Nations Grand Slams, however, England have also lost five of the last six World Cup finals to New Zealand. The United States have also named their team for the match, with four World Cup debutants in the starting side, including social media star Ilona Maher, and a possible seven others off the bench. Back-row forward Kate Zachary, who plays for London club Ealing, captains the 10th-ranked Eagles at her third World Cup. 'Our focus for the first match of the Women's Rugby World Cup 2025 is very much on ourselves and executing our game plan to put pressure on England,' said US coach Sione Fukofuka. Pool A also features Australia and Samoa, who meet on Saturday, with the top two in each of the four groups going through to the quarter-finals. Teams (15-1) England: Ellie Kildunne; Abby Dow, Megan Jones, Tatyana Heard, Jess Breach; Zoe Harrison, Natasha Hunt; Alex Matthews, Sadia Kabeya, Zoe Aldcroft (capt); Abbie Ward, Morwenna Talling; Maud Muir, Amy Cokayne, Hannah Botterman. Replacements: Lark Atkin-Davies, Kelsey Clifford, Sarah Bern, Rosie Galligan, Maddie Feaunati, Lucy Packer, Emily Scarratt, Emma Sing. Coach: John Mitchell (NZL) United States: Lotte Sharp; Emily Heinrich, Ilona Maher, Alev Kelter, Bulou Mataitoga; McKenzie Hawkins, Olivia Ortiz; Rachel Johnson, Georgie Perris-Redding, Kate Zachary (capt); Erica Jarrell-Searcy, Tahlia Brody; Keia Mae Sagapolu Sanele, Kathryn Treder, Hope Rogers. Replacements: Paige Stathopoulos, Alivia Leatherman, Charil Jacoby, Rachel Ehrecke, Freda Tafuna, Cassidy Bargell, Kristin Bitter, Sariah Ibarra Coach: Sione Fukofuka (AUS). — AFP

Suarez fills Messi void as Inter Miami beat Tigres 2-1

Seattle Sounders and LA Galaxy complete quarter-final sweep for MLS clubs MIAMI: Luis Suarez scored a penalty in each half to give Inter Miami a 2-1 win over Tigres UANL on Wednesday, stepping up to fill the void after Lionel Messi was ruled out of the Leagues Cup quarter-final clash. Messi, who has battled a 'minor' muscle injury since a Leagues Cup group match on August 2, returned Saturday after a two-week absence, scoring a goal after coming on as a substitute in a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy. However, the 38-year-old World Cup winner was ruled out against Tigres as Inter advanced in the cross-border club competition for teams from Major League Soccer and Mexico's Liga-MX. 'We rely on how Leo feels and it wasn't the best,' Inter assistant coach Javier Morales said. 'We preferred not to take risks, not to go backward in his recovery.' In a duel that produced few scoring chances, veteran Uruguay striker Suarez was the difference as Inter kept alive their hopes of regaining the title they won in 2023, during Messi's first season in MLS. Things swung Miami's way in the 20th minute when Javier Aquino slid to intercept a cross and the ball hit his left arm in the area. The referee awarded the penalty and the 38-year-old Suarez converted. Tempers flared, with Suarez moving to calm things down after Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul and Uruguayan compatriot Fernando Gorriaran exchanged words. Inter coach Javier Mascherano was sent off at half time, receiving a red card for heated protestations to officials after injury time dragged on past what had been indicated. Mascherano watched from the stands when Tigres grabbed their equalizer in the 67th minute, Angel Correa slipping between two defenders and beating Miami keeper Oscar Ustari. Another handball by Aquino in the 87th minute, confirmed by VAR, gave Miami another penalty and Suarez converted again, this time going left as goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman dived in the opposite direction. Miami booked a semi-final clash on August 27 with Florida rivals Orlando City, who beat Liga MX champions Toluca FC 6-5 on penalties after the teams played to a scoreless draw in Carson, California. MLS sweep Seattle Sounders and LA Galaxy completed the quarter-final sweep for MLS clubs, Seattle beating Club Puebla 4-3 on penalties after the teams drew 0-0 and the Galaxy topping Pachuca 2-1. Goalkeeper Pedro Gallese was the hero for Orlando against Toluca, saving two penalties in the shootout and scoring the decisive penalty himself. Sounders keeper Andrew Thomas made two huge saves in the shootout in Seattle, stopping shots from Ricardo Marin and Nicolas Diaz to help the Sounders advance despite the 76th-minute sending off of Danny Musovski. He was shown a yellow card for a foul on Nicolas Diaz and then a red for a furious protest in which he bumped the referee. LA Galaxy, enduring a tough season after lifting the MLS Cup last year, will host Seattle next week after a victory in which Marco Reus played a key role. The German veteran forced an own goal from Alonso Aceves in the 27th minute, receiving a short corner kick and firing the ball across the face of goal where Aceves's attempt to clear it instead sent the ball into his own net. Reus made it 2-0 when he pounced on a loose ball in the 37th minute and slammed it home. Brazilian Alemao pulled a goal back for Pachuca in second-half stoppage time. Both finalists emerging from next week's semis and the third-place match winner will qualify for the CONCACAF Champions Cup, with the Leagues Cup champion securing direct entry to the Champions Cup round of 16. — AFP

Al-Mousawi and Shaaban secure historic qualification for Karate World Championship

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 21: Kuwait's national karate stars, Said Salman Al-Mousawi and Abdullah Shaaban, have made history as the first Kuwaitis to qualify for the individual Karate World Championship through the international ranking system. The tournament will take place in Cairo from November 27–30. Al-Mousawi secured his spot by achieving fifth place in the individual Kata international ranking, while Shaaban qualified in the individual Kumite 60 kg category after finishing fourth in the international standings. Speaking about the achievement, Al-Mousawi expressed his pride: 'This is a historic moment, as the World Championship is now held separately for individual events. Previously, the individual and team competitions were combined, but now they alternate annually.' He added, 'Only 32 athletes qualify for each category in the Karate World Cup, either through continental medals or by accumulating points in international competitions under the World Karate Federation. Our qualification through the ranking system highlights the level of dedication and consistency required.' Al-Mousawi emphasized that this milestone demonstrates the rapid development of karate in Kuwait and thanked everyone who supported him in reaching the World Cup, allowing him and Shaaban to proudly represent Kuwait on the global stage
